The #Mastodon software setting of #Spoutible is now a dropdown menu. Currently only for mastodon.social and mastodon.online.

Maybe it's temporary but if it's not, they'll have to add at least a hundred reputable and popular servers. Also, it's Mastodon software only. There are far more software, older and/or better than Mastodon which will probably not get support, at least as far as the approach I am seeing.

Since they are only adding cross-posting support, it should be fine to add support for other #Fediverse software like #Streams #Hubzilla #Friendica #Firefish and #Socialhome, to mention a few.

Still, what I want to see is for Spoutible to federate with the #ActivityPub network as well as #ATproto network (a.k.a. #BlueSky).

Für User die auf vielen Fediverse-Accounts zuhause sind, könnte das Frontend #Sengi interessant sein.

Hiermit ist es z.B. möglich die Timelines (auch Listen) aller Fediverse-Accounts gleichzeitig einzubinden und in einem Fenster anzuordnen. Boosts, Replies und Bots lassen sich in den Ansichten leicht verstecken!

So ist es mir gelungen, zugleich #Mastodon #Akkoma #Friendica und #Firefish einzubinden. Ein ziemlicher Hammer 🐰

Είχαμε καιρό να κάνουμε κάποιο update στην πλατφόρμα μας. Αυτή τη φορά προχωρήσαμε σε μια επαναφορά και επανασχεδιασμό μιας παλιότερης υλοποίησης που είχαμε κάνει σχετικά με την εναλλαγή των timelines η οποία είχε αφαιρεθεί από τις τελευταίες εκδόσεις του #Firefish.

Γενικά, έγινε ένα νοικοκύρεμα των Timelines για να μην είναι τόσο χαοτικά. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι αλλαγές που έγιναν είναι οι εξής:

- Το Home Timeline θα περιέχει πλέον εξ αρχής αναρτήσεις από το Local Timeline. Αυτό μπορεί να αλλάξει εύκολα από τα Settings->General όπως βλέπετε στην επισυναπτόμενη εικόνα, εάν επιθυμείτε να εμφανίζονται στο Home μόνο όσα accounts ακολουθείτε. Η αλλαγή έγινε για να είναι πιο προσιτή η επαφή σε νέα άτομα ή άτομα που δεν μπαίνουν συχνά στο μέσο.
- Ως εκ τούτου, το Social Timeline που περιείχε την τωρινή λειτουργικότητα του Home, αφαιρέθηκε. Πλέον μπορείτε να επιλέγετε μία από τις δύο λειτουργικότητες που θέλετε να έχετε στο Home.
- Το Recommended Timeline αποφασίσαμε πως περισσότερο μπέρδευε παρά χρήσιμο ήταν, οπότε αφαιρέθηκε. Αν υπάρχει κάποια αντίρρηση τη συζητάμε.

Αυτά για την ώρα και σύντομα έρχονται περισσότερες αλλαγές!

Yesterday I upgraded my :talamanca: #Mastodon instance to v4.2.3 and this :devnamic: #Firefish instance to v1.0.5 RC.

To be honest, I was quite relaxed with the Mastodon one as it became rutine. For the Firefish one I was more cautious, as it was the first time and could not find any release notes that tells me anything regarding the DB migrations.

:mastodon: When upgrading the Mastodon instance, the release notes mention that has or not any DB changes, and you have to apply the migrations manually, so you can expect that if anything goes wrong you can easily just load the previous image if no DB changes were there.

:firefish: For Firefish the migrations appear to be triggered from within the container at startup. It's a cleaner way for the user but a very uncalm approach as you feel less in control, not knowing before hand what will happen and just seeing yourself crossing fingers at the first start.

Pour l'instant, mon compte personnel (@theotime812) est le seul compte admin, ainsi que le premier compte qui a été créé sur cette instance. J'ai essayé de donner les droits d'admin à un nouveau compte (@Admin), en lui donnant les droits de modérateur dans l'interface de Firefish, puis en mettant isAdmin à true dans la base de donnée, puis en redémarrant le serveur. Mais @Admin n'a pas l'air de pouvoir accéder aux pages d'infos d'utilisateur (j'ai "Une erreur est survenue" sur la page et "You are not an admin" dans la console). Une idée de ce que j'ai pu mal faire ?

Might as well ask here too.

Currently, my personal account (@theotime812) is the only admin account, and the first account that was created on this instance. I've tried giving admin rights to a new account (@Admin), by setting it as moderator, then setting isAdmin to true in the database, then restarting the server. However, @Admin doesn't seem to be able to see the user info page (I get "An error has occured" on the page and "You are not an admin" in the console). Any idea of what I did wrong?

#Firefish's somehow newly tagged Docker images seem to use Alpine Linux with some glibc-built program, and... it doesn't work.

The interesting thing is that it only happens on stable-amd64 but not beta-amd64 (that uses a Debian).

#Firefish still feels wonky with loading problems. Still supporting the platform (also financially) and i know how hard it can be to solve these issues.

Not quite sure if it's a #Fedilab problem or a #Firefish problem (I'm assuming the former though) but I'm definitely having more trouble loading external profiles than I had before. Pinned posts work fine but everything else doesn't load.
Luckily FireFish's web-app looks quite nice although I'll definitely miss a lot of Fedilabs features.

Alright, since some people have been asking, better to clear this out from the start and not feed any rumours. Yes, @namekuji@its.waah.day and I are #firefish core team members, and yes, we are starting #catodon which is a new project based on firefish. But we're not looking to create any sort of #fediverse drama - I think we've had enough of those! So we're not doing a dramatic exit, not storming out, not accusing anyone. I'm not even leaving firefish, I'll try to be around, I love the project - we're basing Catodon on that, after all, and that says something. But at the end of the day, Firefish is @kainoa@firefish.social 's project and I respect that. There are some things I would really like to do differently, and I can't wait to have this rolling - I think that with time it will become obvious that Catodon will try to do its own thing, which is not necessarily better or worse than Firefish, but it might suit some people's needs better. I should also probably clarify here that all of my involvement in firefish has been as a volunteer, I've had no financial affiliation with the project. Hope this clears everything out and I don't have to return to this subject. We just want to start our own thing, and we hope we'll be making something worth your attention - and to build a nice community around it on #codeberg, once our repo goes public. Firefish is also great and I still hope it thrives. Catodon will be another option, which can't be that bad! "Free as in freedom", eh? 🙂

Der Motzmichel

Die letzte Zeit war ich wenig auf #firefish unterwegs. Auch dieses Wochenende war pickepackevoll mit Dingen, die erledigt werden mussten und dann pfuschte mir auch noch die lausige Kabel-Internet-Verbindung von #magenta dazwischen (bzw. wahrscheinlich das Modem).

Ich muss immer noch einigen Nutzern im #fediverse zurück folgen. Da bin ich mit meiner #follower Liste noch nicht durch.

Immerhin habe ich dieses Wochenende doch einiges geschafft. Die PS5 läuft und die Daten meiner PS4Pro werden gerade auf eine externe Festplatte verfrachtet, weil Sony es nicht schafft, eine LAN-Datenverbindung zwischen zwei ihrer eigenen Konsolen problemlos hin zu bekommen grummel. Ich muss auch weiterhin sagen, dass ich nicht der größte #sony Fan bin. Und natürlich mag die PS5 4k-BDs nur auf einem 4k Monitor/Fernseher abspielen. WTF?!!!

Aber das kann sie haben. Nach Beendigung der Datenübertragung wandert die PS5 an meinem 4k-Monitor und meine #XBoxSeriesX kommt an den guten alten Samsung 1080p Fernseher von 2013 mit einem immer noch hervorragenden Bild (für einen LCD TV).

Und wie gut, dass ich noch einen 4k BD-Player habe. Von Sony, aber der spielt immerhin am Full HD-TV anstandslos auch die 4k Scheiben ab. Verstehe einer Sony. Wie der Name ja auch schon sagt: SO NIE!

Manchmal kommt es vor, dass ich mit einer Reaction etwas bestimmtes ausdrücken möchte. Vor allem dann, wenn ich keine Kraft habe, um Antworten zu verfassen. Ein einfaches Liken würde dies eben nicht tun und u.U. ganz anders rüber kommen. Daher kommt es vor, dass ich dann gar nicht like.

Ja, und allein deswegen finde ich #Mastodon mittlerweile wirklich voll doof.

Ich habe den Fehler gemacht, bei #Firefish unter #Systemsteuerung - Allgemein den #Cache für entfernte Dateien zu aktivieren.

Das lässt den #Speicherplatzverbrauch exrem ansteigen.

Leider scheinen die Dateien auch nach Deaktivierung nicht wieder gelöscht zu werden und man kann auch im Gegensatz zu z.B. #Mastodon keine Zeitdauern des Verbleibs auf dem eigenen Server konfigurieren.

Wenn ich nun aber das gesamte Verzeichnis leere, dann sind natürlich auch meine eigenen hochgeladenen Dateien weg.

Sieht jemand eine Lösung für das Problem?

Esp from Kainoa, I need an "ultimatum" here - should I just give up with getting help from firefish.social to have all my posts exported, or am I supposed to wait for something? I'm not demanding to be helped, I just need an answer on will I be helped so I can do something about it myself, or move on.

Alternatively, I'm wondering if there's something I could do (perhaps programmatically) to collect all of my notes and constructing a valid notes backup json file myself? I've been holding off migrating my account simply because I've not been able to receive my notes. It's been almost a month now since I've started attempting the exports.

Okay, my parser now (correctly) works with objects from #mastodon, #firefish, and #bovine and covers all of AS2, JSON-LD context objects, and a few actor-specific extensions from Mastodon specifically.

I also implemented some (thread safe) caching so as to not annoy myself later.

There's a lot of spit-and-polish still required and a bunch of tests still to write to explore all of the corner cases, but I can call that good for now and move on to something else for a bit.

Still no progress/updates on this btw - my data on 2 accounts are essentially still stuck/"held hostage" on #firefish.social 🙃

Following up again - @kainoa@firefish.social @thatonecalculator@stop.voring.me is there really nothing kind folks at firefish.social can do to check on why these multiple notes exports that were done for the past almost ~3 weeks now still have not completed, seeing that according to you it should only take no longer than 15 mins.

I genuinely need an export of my notes on these 2 accounts: @irfan@firefish.social and @afrina@firefish.social. Thank you.

This might be an instance-specific issue, but since all I've got is Firefish's #GitLab repo, and it is the Flagship instance after all, I've reported the issue on there.

Als letztes für heute noch die Follower nach Software der jeweiligen Instanz. Hier ist "Dominanz" für #Mastodon eine klare Untertreibung. Nur von #Firefish und #Pxelfed folgen jeweils noch mehr als 100 Accounts @heiseonline. Interessanterweise auf Rang 4 die #Nostr-Bridge.

Einschränkend muss ich hier schreiben, dass bei mehr als 2000 Accounts die jeweilige Instanz nicht erkennbar war. Waren aber auch einige mit Mastodon und das Gesamtbild bleibt ja.

So maybe instead of more forks that focus on rolling out new features, could the devs of Foundkey, #Firefish, #Iceshrimp, et al work on your architecture so that even a relatively small (in comparison to some of the Misskey and Mastodon servers) 1500 user server, let alone a 4000 user one can function without falling over, suffering extended timeouts, having server costs blow out thanks to database performance issues, and then decimate it's community when folks are forced to migrate, and then those folks struggle to get their data exported.

So much front end work and not enough backend is the present legacy of the pre-Misskey v 13 forks.

Das Thema Apps für mobile Geräte hat sich erledigt, da ich via Browser das volle Firefish-Erlebnis habe und das ohne Einschränkungen.

Der Server federation.network ist sehr schnell und die Benutzeroberfläche ist im Grunde selbsterklärend. Man sollte sich etwas mit den Einstellungen beschäftigen. Da geht viel.

Wer #firefish ausprobieren möchte, davor aber bislang zurückschreckte, weil es im Grunde keine Apps für den großartigen Dienst im #fediverse gibt, dem kann ich als Mensch mit einer Sehbehinderung hiermit Entwarnung geben!

Firefish im Browser hat ALLE Funktionen des Servers und funktioniert nach einigen Einstellungen auch auf kleinen Smartphone-Displays oder am Tablet ganz hervorragend.

I have been seeing lots of talk about #Firefish and the "dumpster fire" that FF social has devolved into. I have a lot of sympathy for the dev team finding as we have here at blahaj.zone that FF/IS doesn't scale well. The devolution has been more public over at FF social cos Fedi's own Guy Kawasaki was hyping it up and was part of the team until it wasn't producing the results he expected and he slinked off. I wonder if the seed funders have done the same. Chris and Kainoa had separate funders, both involved in political tech. I think they were hoping to throw some seed money at something that wouldn't drag the chain like Mastodon development and be the new Twttr for liberal politics to electioneer on. 🤮 Kainoa told me who his funder was and from that point I haven't promoted Calckey/Firefish since.

Gotta love the "but we're the good guys" tech VC people, male, white, older, cishet, been "around" social tech for a while, looking to ride this Fedi thing into "significance"/"success", who found their side project who they fed "advice" to without any real stakes/responsibility. And when Kainoa wasn't the 10x dev they hoped, they've jumped ship, not that they could do any better.

It would be nice for the sake of transparency that there was some kind of repository where such funding was disclosed. Ironic when one of the funders is about protecting democracy.

Just took a look at the local timeline on firefish.social and literally everyone is posting about moving off of the server. 😅 I'm going to attempt to delete my firefish.social account in a few days but I'm honestly not sure if it's going to work due to the amount of errors. Notifications don't load, the home timeline doesn't load either. 🤷 Nothing really works on there like it's supposed to.

From the technical side:

1. The #Fediverse network (not #Mastodon network; Mastodon is one of many Fediverse software) is based on a @w3c standard called the #ActivityPub protocol.

Think for example the protocol behind emails, SMTP. Or the protocol behind surfing the web which is HTTP/S.

Because it is a #WebStandard, there is always a software available.

Here are some examples of software for the Fediverse network:

Now, the above examples are just the software options for running a community or service (which you can do if you know how).

Each have a different purpose. Each have a different UI and UX.

Then there are also #Frontend software. These are software that will give you a different layout for the software the server is using.

For example, you don't like the default Mastodon UI? Then log in your Mastodon account here: https://fe.soapbox.pub and use a UI that is similar, if not the same, as #Twitter / #twitter

2. Lifespan.

Let's say the Mastodon team call it quits, for whatever reason. Will the network die? No.

Again, Mastodon is just one of many fediverse software. You can just move to a new server or instance of your choice.

Secondly, the Mastodon source code is #FLOSS / #FOSS (or #OpenSource). In fact, there are already a lot of forks of Mastodon, adding other features that are not found in the mainline Mastodon code.

And the servers/instances running Mastodon? They won't die just because the Mastodon team called it quits. They'll just find a Mastodon fork and move to it. Or, start their own.

3. If you're adventurous, you can run your own solo or family instance/server. Or maybe a public server that is invite-only.

That's just 3, there are many more.

#BlueSky? Yes, they do offer federation (a.k.a. interoperability) but the protocol they are using is not a WebStandard, they started their own and so far have no plans to support the webstandard ActivityPub protocol.

In fact, right now, federation with BlueSky is turned-off. They are not yet concentrating on it.

However, once they do, I personally would not be surprised if the generous Fediverse server/instance hosts start to setup their own federated BlueSky server/instance, which in turn will definitely help grow the BlueSky network.

And who knows? Maybe BlueSky will implement the ActivityPub protocol and join the Fediverse network? If this happens, then it becomes a matter of choice. Which UI and UX and features do you like?

But, until that happens, in my opinion, staying in the Fediverse is your best bet.
