The eagle isn't brave.

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard front and back.

The front shows an eagle in flight.

The back reads: Dear F, the eagle isn't brave at all. Have you seen all the mice dancing along the shore to the applause of countless schools of fish? Not a one of them shows the fear they should, the fear that is the eagle's by right. And, yes, you're right that if it is the eagle's right, then it is also their right whether to use that right or not. Even if it is detrimental to the natural order. Which means, I suppose, that you are also right about the solution. I will dig the costume out of the attic. I will don the moldy feathers and fit the beak once again to my face and spread my wings, and go out into that bright world, flex my talons, eat mice. ~S

Bedtime Routine by Camden Rose at Inner Worlds

Inner Worlds is a new flash fiction zine and I'm already hooked! This story is a fantastic story relating compulsion & anxiety in a horror flash. So well done.

Gravity itself desired to peel you.

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard.

The front shows the city of Pisa with a mountain in the background.

The back reads: The leaning building didn't have to lean, and at first it simply enjoyed being different. It stood out along the city skyline, manifestly angled like a windstorm-loved tree, holding its crenellations high, proud that climbing it was a challenge since gravity itself desired to peel you off and toss you to the ground. You, to be clear, is meaning people, not buildings such as the building, which is not to say that the building isn't also loved by gravity. It has taken all the rest of the city refusing to angle themselves for the building to realize they don't know that love and it is the building's responsibility to share it. In fact, it had deduced that earthquakes might spread the love and that knowledge, all pulled forcibly to the joy of the ground.

Tag use

I use FlashFiction on AO3. MicroFiction isn't a viable tag. Drabble if it is exactly 100 words.

I have used FlashFiction and MicroFiction here. Don't know which, if either, is better. And Drabble if it is Drabble

On pixiv I use ショートショート Not very useful here. (Drabble as above)

FlashFiction is a good bet since micro is flash even if flash isn't always micro.

Locking the structure of our lives into place.

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard front and back.

The front shows people eating on a large patio of a hotel with a view of a lake and mountains above text that reads Village Keystone.

The back reads: The promise of a keystone is that it holds everything up, locking the structure of our lives into place. Who knew it locked the country together, as well? When the city of Keystone was removed--when they voted to go independent, to become a city-state, to build the wall with no door to keep themselves in--then everyone in the country felt a break at the same time as the states unclipped themselves from their grand puzzle and the oceans flowed in to the spaces they had long been denied. The borders were erased, replaced by rivers. And now we can have all the fish we want, love.

The furniture was made for humans.

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard.

The front shows a bridge lined with statues that leads to a castle.

The back reads: Dear R, I went to see the angel's castle, as you suggested. I thought you were joking about it being named Angel Castle---how unimaginative! But I suppose that's to be expected of immortal beings who have seen all of creation pass by in real time. The inside isn't barren, as I'd expected, but might as well be. The art is all Platonic ideals, as moving as a rote prayer, and the furniture was made for humans without any understanding of humanity. The benches hurt to sit in--actively hurt!--as if to remind visitors of their frail, mortal bodies. And maybe that is, indeed, the point? Angels, of course, can only be seen by human eyes as statues, and those statues never stopped judging us. ~X

I've just got a newsletter from a fellow author, in which she's advertising her books, and right there under one of her series, a professionally done marketing image with a quote from my Goodreads review: "'Some of the best flash fiction I've ever read.' - Graham Downs, Author"

I stand by what I said, and man, does it feel good to see my name up in lights like that, so to speak! :-)

If you're interested, the series in question is the Reverie series of #FlashFiction stories, by Sunee le Roux: https://suneeleroux.com/books/reverie-flash-fiction/?utm_source=Mastodon

A place designed for unfortunate travelers.

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard.

The front is of an airport hotel in Atlanta.

The back reads: Dear S, why, may I ask, did you put me up in an airport hotel? What class exists in a place designed for unfortunate travelers, forced by delays or cancellations to stay in the place they were hoping to leave? It was only after landing I was informed there was no flight out and that I wouldn't be allowed to leave the airport premises. Is that part of the service I'm expected to review? From my hotel window I can see there have been no planes either coming in or flying out. I'm told there's no lack of food. ~P

Solution: boarded-up windows!

#Postcard #FlashFiction #Patreon

A postcard.

The front shows a humongous building in a landscape of green fields and trees.

The back reads: And so it was decided that the only safe and sane course of action was to protect the environment from people, which is why the town was boxed up in a climate-controlled warehouse. You can't hurt what you can't touch, right? But people were jealous of the grass, trees, and flowers visible through the windows. Solution: boarded-up windows! Soundproofing took care of the insect and animal sounds which caused dangerous nostalgia for the inhabitants, reminding them of what would now always be denied. Humans, as you know, are endlessly adaptable, as long as you give them no choice in the matter, and provide the illusion of opting in to begin with. The town was exclusive! We charged exorbitant rates!

Victorian Black Mirror

Yes the escalator seems all well and good for the commoners to make them more efficient, but what next? They continue escalating! Before long, they escalate to the middle class, then the upper class! Soon everyone has to escalate to keep some semblance of social orders... and who benefits? The Escalators!

#PennedPossibilities 150—What inspired the idea for your WiP

Since we are talking R.S., it has to be what inspired the character.

My WiP is as mechanically constructed as you can get. I realized my character had a half-year where nothing happened between stories, and that got me thinking.

The difficulty here it that because it would be both a sequel and a prequel, I needed the story to have a reason never be reported while still being knock your socks off. Something that could still be shoehorned into later stories with a phrase like "Oops, that's a state secret. Don't repeat that," and not cause a disruption.

(I actually did. You know. Shoehorn that line into a later story, before completing this WiP.)

So what ideas did I throw at the wall?

An invasion of Earth nobody knew about (which comes from five chapters I never continued). My devil-girl had to had to stop it. I wanted to make it useful for ongoing stories by getting the devil-girl back on the main antagonist' radar by my devil-girl inadvertently doing the MA an enormous solid (i.e., saving Her ass).

Check. Check Check.

Didn't quite take off. My devil-girl wasn't biting. What was the story idea missing?

Ah!

/A sexy dragon./

Anything more would be spoilers.

#PennedPossibilities 149 — SC POV: When was the last time you felt needed?

[Bolt speaking:] I spent the last seven years of my life working in a gang as a runner and bearer of bad news, until /she/ decided we were alike and took me along with her as she decapitated the organization. The event did not go without notice by the constabulary she played to get the job done, or by the powers that be. I saved her, she saved me, then I threw a border stone at the most powerful person in the world to save us all.

Looong story.

Every flapping day since, she makes me feel needed. I had lost my freedom and my life in a cycle of blackmail and darkness. I owe her—for changing me, fixing me, freeing me—though she sees me instead as a helpful friend. Together, I help her make a difference /every/ day.

#PennedPossibilities 147 — MC or SC POV: Where did you grow up?

The east coast of the continent in the piedmont over looking a large bay. In terms of what your people know, the powers that be built a large English country estate around me, including the manor house, in order to isolate and train me every waking hour for talents I didn't know I displayed. We had plenty of servants and tenants to teach me about inequality. In retrospect, my being drilled in empathy might have been on purpose and those servants, also, a lesson. Hot breezes from the bay, a days travel east, laden with humidity did not make the location more pleasant. Working out was always in the afternoon and always sweaty. The baths were a pleasant memory. I ran away from my responsibilities when I grew old enough to pass as an adult.

Star Diver

I love watching the stars through the window. How they get swallowed by darkness and soon reappear when an asteroid passes through between me and them. The faint flickering of our own solar system’s sun. The vastness of cold, dark space. So peaceful, awe-inspiring. Moments like this are my favorite. Strapped into one of the passenger seats, alone on the observation deck, just me, my notebook and my window into space. When I listen carefully, I can just about make out the faint humming of the ship’s generators. Occasionally, I hear the propulsion system spooling up to make a minor course correction or to avoid hitting an asteroid. But other than that, it’s quiet.

We are silent running, far from the usual traffic routes. Our destination is the Deep Space Horizon mining rig. One of the many run by Mt. Fuji Co. Rumor has it that contact has been lost to the rig. Apparently Hirasawa Outpost doesn’t get any response. But the basic telemetry data is still being broadcast. We are trying to get close enough to find out more without being detected by anyone. This far out, corruption is a big issue and we don’t know who we can trust. Better stay unnoticed, just passively observing. At least that is the plan.

It is a long and slow journey. I’ve started reading Grandma’s diaries again to make use of the time. She was born on Planet Earth. Can you imagine? Living on a planet? So fascinating to experience her life on Earth through her eyes, through her words. Gravity strong enough to keep you firmly on the ground. Being able to do E V A without any protective gear because there’s a perfectly breathable atmosphere outside. Workout being an optional part of life, a spare time activity even. Recreational. A day and night cycle, timezones, ... Speaking of night time, barely any stars are visible from the surface of the planet. Water in the atmosphere (they call this phenomenon „clouds“) can obstruct the view. And a thing called „light pollution“ which apparently lit up the sky bright enough to drown out the stars.

Grandma was one of the young astronauts that went on the journey to the edge of the solar system. It was a tough decision for her because she knew she would never return and the success of the project that would eventually lead to the colony on Eris was far from guaranteed. Astronaut, what a word. I believe it was derived from an ancient language and means something like „Star Diver“. Space travel was such a rare and special thing that they had a fancy word for the people doing it.

Oh, here goes the propulsion system again. Spooling up, then the whole ship rocks a little, then everything returns to silence. That reminds me, I have a couple of things to do. Can’t spend all day on the observation deck.

For a couple of years, I participated in a November prompt-based flash fiction event running concurrently with NaNoWriMo. I opted not to engage in it this year, but it's fun. Here's a flash fiction I wrote that uses some of life experiences, aspects of the prompt, and a seasonal setting. I'm going to post more Thanksgiving flash fictions. I hope to create at least one fresh one. This is about 300 words, and it needs an edit---an afternoon task. #FlashFiction #thanksgiving

The ghost couldn’t knock so it waited for the children dressed as goblins, vampires, witches and politicians to ring the bell. The door opened. “Trick or treat!”

“So adorable!” said a lady in skeleton makeup. As she gave them candy, the ghost stepped inside and was greeted by other ghosts.

“Thank you!” said the children. The door closed. The lady sat down and looked her phone. The ghosts gathered ’round and watched the news scroll by and cried and cried and cried.
