Ceanothus looks beautiful this time of year - here's one from on top of the hill behind us.

We've tried growing them before but can never get enough sun for them...

Some Spring sights from the last couple of weeks:

* Forget-Me-Nots

* Zantedeschia flower that self-seeded down the drive
* Marigold in the sunshine

The little blue cup of a partially opened chickory flower.

#flowers #FlowersOfMastodon #florespondence #wildflowers #photography

We see a partially open blue flower, with its long translucent petals forming a cup just the right shape for holding an egg. It rises from a green stem cutting diagonally across the frame, and a green calyx forms a perfect stand for this little blue egg cup. Each petal has fine fibery tendrils around its margins and these have collected tiny droplets of moisture. The background is a blurry green and gold world of chilly sunrise.

It's triceratops season! No, not dinosaurs - Chiglottis triceratops is a tiny species of orchid that grows in Tasmanian forests.

There are any more plants in the forest this year than I saw last year, and they're just starting to flower.

#Tasmania #TasmanianForest #Orchids #Florespondence #Nature

Photo of a small orchid growing in leaf litter, taken from above.

It has two leaves, opposite one-another and a single flower facing straight upwards. The simple flower is green with reddish streaks.

It has three petals, one held out to each side, and the third looks like a tongue sticking out. This even has what look like 15 dark pink tastebuds in the middle. In front of these is a shiny dark purple dot. There is a lid-like sepal over the top and two long ones sticking out from under the 'tongue'.
Photo of another Chiglottis triceratops. This one is taken from the side and shows its long stem growing from between the two leaves. This one's stem is three times as long as most I've found.

This photo shows the outside of the petals, which are a lot more red than the inside, and there's a purple band around the top of the stem.

This is my annual “not saffron” post. These flowers are most-often known by the common names Autumn crocus or Meadow saffron,…and they are neither. They are also called ‘naked boys’ or ‘naked ladies’ because the flowers emerge long before the leaves.

This is Colchicum autumnale, a member of the Colchicaceae family, whereas true crocus are part of the Iridaceae family.

This is a popular ornamental despite being extremely toxic/poisonous. It is most poisonous to cats, but a human who eats any part of this plant might not survive the experience, especially if they ingest the bulb. Post-flower, the greens and bulb can be mistaken for wild garlic.

I have had people in my neighborhood ask about my saffron harvest and, after talking to me, say they have saffron in their yard, and when I go take a look, it’s this.

#Saffron #PlantIdentification #Gardening #Florespondence

A large patch of Colchicum autumnale blooming in a Seattle yard.

These are *much* taller than saffron crocus, and their color is paler and pinker.

The bulb of this flower has the semi-questionable and rather-horrific history as a preferred plant of self-harm in Ancient Greece, supposedly due to the fact that by the time symptoms show, nothing can be done to stop the terminal reaction.

The account I read of a Victorian doctor who fed these bulbs to a dog expressly for the purpose of documenting the specific reactions and resulting death was fucking nasty, and you’re just going to have to trust me on that one.
Looking into the flower produced by Colchicum autumnale, many differences from true saffron can be seen.

These are a pinker flower, and the bold white mark up the center of the petals is distinctly different from the thin, dark purple veining found on saffron. The pistil and stamen structure are completely different in number and color from what you find with Crocus sativus, and there is a complete lack of anything resembling the bright red stigma that are saffron spice threads.

I may be a sharpen tool addict. I absolutely love the way it adds the paradox of seeming clarity but begins to bleed into a new form of film grain and distortion.

Having the artifacts of process in an image is, for me, a way to remind the viewer that the image is not the flower, it is the idea of a flower that existed, for a time, in front of a camera.

None of the [not-tomato] seeds that I sowed in the pot at the onset of summer ever germinated, but apparently some seeds from last year's cherry tomatoes survived the frosty winter and germinated in numbers instead.

Interestingly, one of the plants has “eggplant coloured” leaves and tomatoes (though I don't know what the colour will be like once they're ripe), and I've never had any “black” tomatoes in my garden until now (and the rest of the plants in the rather big pot have the normal green colour) so either the plants last year were promiscuous, or a mutation has happened. Whichever the case, I hope they will be tasty. 😋

Speaking of frost-hardy tomato seeds:

Starting tomatoes from seeds is challenging here because of the peculiar spring climate we have: most often it is too damn cold for too long time, and then at the beginning of June it goes from very cold spring to almost summer in just one day. So what happens is I keep thinking it's much too cold for sowing yet until it's almost too late. When will I learn…

But since tomato seeds apparently are frost-hardy, how about just sowing the whole lot outside in the autumn, then they can germinate at their own pace when they feel the temperature is appropriate. Would that be such a bad idea? Has any of you guys grown tomatoes from seeds that way?
