Sorry I’m a bit high but I’m having this thought. This happens a lot, I just never really post them anywhere… until now.
Anyway, #Linux is the sugar of operating systems. It, by its very nature, is inherently incompatible with the fatty ingredients that make up corporate operating systems.
So we’re told by companies it’s ‘bad’ for us, it’s for our own ‘security’, it’s for our own ‘good’ they say (reminding me of how #fascism starts/operates), often because otherwise it would make us ‘big fat victims’ of malware and malicious actors and whatever because it’s so open and different (I know, being ‘open’ is sccaarryy 👻).
Instead we’re sold these ‘sugar-free’ enshitified products and services laced with questionable artificial ingredients (#AI for short). And then they shove their #ads down our throats and try and force us to swallow. All the while making us the real product to be bought and sold on the big data markets.
They don’t want us to know how good Linux (etc*) really is, like how anyone can just simply plant their preferred flavor of Linux in their own walled garden. Or start a new garden (ok the sugar metaphor has metamorphed into #gardening in general). I’m hungry. Oh yeah, munchies. Almost forgot I’m high, no wonder I’m writing about food.
Anyway, part II. Basically companies want to build their walled gardens to keep people in so they never get a taste of how sweet Linux really is. Or really any *non-proprietary (e.g. #FOSS, #FLOSS, #opensource , libre, or however you want to call it) non-product product or service or #selfhosted/homegrown #software, etc.
(To be continued, maybe)
Spammers will try to use every trick to send emails to their victims. This is why the new double opt-in feature is only going to be available for subscribers on our hosted service.
This doesn’t impact you if you’re #selfhosting. It’s just for managed Keila on keila.io.

Of course, only members of the Debian project are entitled to vote, but why not have a straw poll here? (Poll options are truncated by Mastodon, sorry.)

Students at the UGent Zeus WPI are successfully reverse engineering #ESP32 radio, to the point where they can now send and receive WiFi packets. This is a major step towards making that platform useful for fully #FLOSS #embedded projects. If you use that platform, please consider supporting them!
Thanks Zeus team for doing this, and thanks @NGIZero for funding it!
Project is dead. Long live the project.
Not that I have much "influence" necessarily but just that I am persistent and very interested in our community coming together even more than it already is... so can try to assist 🤓
@nytpu I think that's really sad to see, because #piracy isn't a solution to the #Enshittification of #CCSS and the #greed of companies like #Adobe who decided to axe any #OneTimePurchase #licensing when they were forced to accept their customers' right to sell #UsedSoftwareLicenses...
I'm really disappointed about him, because #FLOSS does solve the issue...

Update. Here's the #EuropeanCommission call for tenders on the new #OpenSource infrastructure for Open [#OpenAccess] Research Publishing.
The EC estimates it will pay €1 million for 2 years of work. Tenders are due by January 31, 2024.
Imagine how many people 🧑🤝🧑 were involved in programming the 2113 packages currently installed in my OS. How many hours ⏰ of thinking, programming, designing, testing, debugging, translating and documenting they invested?
I wish I had the money 💸 to pay them all for creating the tools I use every day.
This made me wonder if there's a Free Open Source Software day and based on https://www.softwarefreedomday.org it seems to be 3rd Saturday of September 📆
Thank you to every #floss contributor out there 🙏
and how reformulating the issue can help us start solving it.
The video of the talk is now up.
A navigation panel in the presenter mode has landed in the development branch of #LabPlot! 🚀🙂
It allows to select, zoom and navigate plots also in the presenter mode.
It sounds like Home Assistant is maturing nicely - but are you still paying a lot for hardware? Like I couldn't even find a lightbulb on Amazon that I could tell is compatible
@itsfoss And everyone can translate Denaro on Weblate.

There are still a few days left (four!) to join the @prepostprint maintenance team and bring your contribution to the collective exploration of alternative publishing practices: https://prepostprint.org/maintenance/2023-2024-call.html #web2print #floss #publishing (also, you’re welcome to join the discussion on https://matrix.to/#/#prepostprint-public:matrix.org).
Espechally when it comes to #FLOSS projects.
I mean, look at the mess I do:
You'll easily be able to find what you're looking for:
Not to mention that sadly, @landley is right:
And sadly that is a problem that only few [i.e. #Canonical at least does] adress [on their core product @ubuntu LTS Desktop - even tho @opensuse / #OpenSUSE's #YaST may be seen as easier to work with for entry-level #Sysadmins since it's a better reimagination to the #Windows Control Panel]...
The #EuropeanCommission is finally considering whether "#OpenSource software (#OSS)…can be used as a foundation for developing the new #publishing platform" for EC-funded #OpenAccess research.
Unfortunately, the new software would merely "underpin" #OpenResearchEurope (#ORE), not replace it. ORE is proprietary software owned by #TaylorAndFrancis. When the EC called for bids on ORE, it did not require open code despite many calls to do so.
One of my favorite #FLOSS Projects is the amazing @kdenlive for professional video-editing on a small scale - I would not like to miss the piece of @kde #OpenSource software which works like a charm on any OS I installed it.
I also apriciate the documentation very much: https://docs.kdenlive.org/en/
There were several attempts at implementing it, all shot down by maintainers.
@Gargron , do you still stand by your comment from https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/11446#issuecomment-516297592 ?
Is there space for discussing and implementing notification grouping in this app?
Since it's December, it's time for #FreeSoftwareAdvent.
Tag it with #FreeSoftwareAdvent and we'll retoot it.
We'll try to promote different FLOSS software every day.
So, tell us - what are your favourite free and open source software?
What #FLOSS software do you use in your design process? In your daily lives? In your professional work?
By remaining to use a chromium browser, you're assisting in fucking up the web. I get it, it was nice and shiny. But it's time to come back to Firefox, folks.

What's the point of an #anonymizing #messenger if they - in clear violation of #GDPR & #BDSG - conmect that to a #PhomeNumber which im more juristictions than ever can't be obtained anonymously in.any legal capacity???
Stop treating open source projects and foundations like consumer-facing businesses.
Unless you've got a paid support contract that's being neglected, or there's a grave concern, it's inappropriate to escalate issues to massively public forums.
Maintainers and the staffers and volunteers at foundations are already overworked.
Don't make it harder for them to address your issue by ALSO making them waste time firefighting in public.
If you are contributing to Free and Libre Software (as developer, designer, UI/UX researcher, translator, and other roles included), how much of your time spent in FLOSS do you dedicate to a project in the long term?
(Also read: Are you rather a fly-by contributor or long-term maintainer)
The nouveau website redesign is now merged!
I also blogged the entire process: https://tesk.page/2023/11/15/rewriting-nouveaus-website.html
I have a request for a GNOME Shell extension (as a way to perhaps prototype something that could make it upstream): widgets!
In elementary OS, we added support for "applets", which really is just a bit of unique handling of something that already existed: keep-below. elementary OS treats windows requesting this behavior specially in a few ways...
The LabPlot team is heavily working on the next release of LabPlot.
A few highlights of the incoming features:
👉 new plot type: Q-Q plot
👉 new plot type: Lollipop plot
👉 new plot type: KDE plot
👉 ODS import support @libreoffice
👉 more functions in the function editor
👉 extended search&replace
...and much more!
You can track the new features here:
