Sorry I’m a bit high but I’m having this thought. This happens a lot, I just never really post them anywhere… until now.
Anyway, #Linux is the sugar of operating systems. It, by its very nature, is inherently incompatible with the fatty ingredients that make up corporate operating systems.
So we’re told by companies it’s ‘bad’ for us, it’s for our own ‘security’, it’s for our own ‘good’ they say (reminding me of how #fascism starts/operates), often because otherwise it would make us ‘big fat victims’ of malware and malicious actors and whatever because it’s so open and different (I know, being ‘open’ is sccaarryy 👻).
Instead we’re sold these ‘sugar-free’ enshitified products and services laced with questionable artificial ingredients (#AI for short). And then they shove their #ads down our throats and try and force us to swallow. All the while making us the real product to be bought and sold on the big data markets.
They don’t want us to know how good Linux (etc*) really is, like how anyone can just simply plant their preferred flavor of Linux in their own walled garden. Or start a new garden (ok the sugar metaphor has metamorphed into #gardening in general). I’m hungry. Oh yeah, munchies. Almost forgot I’m high, no wonder I’m writing about food.
Anyway, part II. Basically companies want to build their walled gardens to keep people in so they never get a taste of how sweet Linux really is. Or really any *non-proprietary (e.g. #FOSS, #FLOSS, #opensource , libre, or however you want to call it) non-product product or service or #selfhosted/homegrown #software, etc.
The sky is the limit after living in a dark box surrounded by many a dark #Cloud and closed #Windows.

Students at the UGent Zeus WPI are successfully reverse engineering #ESP32 radio, to the point where they can now send and receive WiFi packets. This is a major step towards making that platform useful for fully #FLOSS #embedded projects. If you use that platform, please consider supporting them!

Thoughts on FOSS vs FLOSS wording? I think I'll start using "FLOSS" to include libre software per Richard Stallman's recommendation. I think it's important to keep "open source" explicit.

Imagine how many people 🧑🤝🧑 were involved in programming the 2113 packages currently installed in my OS. How many hours ⏰ of thinking, programming, designing, testing, debugging, translating and documenting they invested?
I wish I had the money 💸 to pay them all for creating the tools I use every day.

The #EuropeanCommission is finally considering whether "#OpenSource software (#OSS)…can be used as a foundation for developing the new #publishing platform" for EC-funded #OpenAccess research.

Unfortunately, the new software would merely "underpin" #OpenResearchEurope (#ORE), not replace it. ORE is proprietary software owned by #TaylorAndFrancis. When the EC called for bids on ORE, it did not require open code despite many calls to do so.
One of my favorite #FLOSS Projects is the amazing @kdenlive for professional video-editing on a small scale - I would not like to miss the piece of @kde #OpenSource software which works like a charm on any OS I installed it.

Unless you've got a paid support contract that's being neglected, or there's a grave concern, it's inappropriate to escalate issues to massively public forums.
Maintainers and the staffers and volunteers at foundations are already overworked.
Don't make it harder for them to address your issue by ALSO making them waste time firefighting in public.

In elementary OS, we added support for "applets", which really is just a bit of unique handling of something that already existed: keep-below. elementary OS treats windows requesting this behavior specially in a few ways...
