Updated: June 7, 2023

[ beadsland on Ko-fi ]

Shows a color scale of 7-day average inpatient beds occupied over 7-day average inpatient beds staff for 48 contiguous states only. Scale runs from black (well over 140%), to purple (120%), to red (80%), to orange (50%), to light yellow (10%). Counties for which no hospitals/beds are reported are represented by colored hatch marks reflecting state-level average.

Sparse grey dots show vast expanses where no PICU beds are reported. Dense patterns of black dots represent counties where PICUs are full or near full.

Much of the map is hatched red-orange with grey dots, with purple-red-orange counties. Some yellow, mostly in Mississippi watershed. Black & black-dotted counties can be spied in all regions. The state of Idaho stands out as a black-grey hatch surrounded red/orange/yellow hatches in surrounding states.

A bit of nice news:
CDC reported zero pediatric #flu deaths for the week ending May 27 — the first time in 32 weeks that FluView hasn't included word of new flu deaths in kids.

Japan to stockpile vaccines for H5N1 bird flu virus

Japan has decided to change its stockpile of flu vaccines in order to be able to deal with the H5N1 bird flu virus

The ministry’s panel of experts says the H5N1 virus is highly likely to infect humans in the near future, and that more transmissible variants could emerge. There have already been reports of infections in mammals.

Using #death certificates, #CDC released provisional mortality data for all causes in the US. (Not every county listed #COVID as cause of death, so this is likely an undercount for COVID.)

3.2 million people died in 2022, which is a 5% decrease from 2021. About 244,986 people died of COVID in 2022, a 46% decrease from COVID deaths in 2021.

Dr. Griffin emphasizes that COVID is not the flu, since #flu killed “only” 19,000 people (at least compared to COVID). 4/

A “hemagglutin stem nanoparticle vaccine” for #flu induces neutralizing antibodies in healthy adults. This is one step toward a universal flu #vaccine, since the “stem” in question is the part of the spike coating that doesn’t change, while the rest of the spike does. Although Dr. Racaniello wonders if we apply selection pressure there, if that part would start to change too. 😅 2/

I've been told to be more explicit: your (immune) defenses have probably been weakened since you caught #COVID
But these defenses are lowered against any bugs! 🦠

That's why the #WHO unexpectedly says that we need to increase hospital capacity, whether it's for the respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus, or bacteria. **Because you've been hacked!** 🧱

As well, don't forget that most of the viruses that enter our respiratory tract are airborne, even bacteria 🗣️

Yup, The problem with people's understanding of "the flu" is that "the flu" in the common usage is just generic #flu like symptoms. fever, aching, drowsiness, inflammation and sleepiness. You get over it in 1-3 days. #INFLUENZA on the other hand is a very nasty disease that can kill you. I know an adult man in maybe his 40s who died from it. Influenza can last up to 2 weeks and cause long term vascular issues like covid. #Covid side effects have finally come down to near influenza levels of both death and long time health risks. Yearly death rates of covid was 2.5x the flu in march and dropped to 2.3x in may. Long covid has dropped from 42% of all hospitalized in 2021 to 28% this year. Long flu in 2021 was at 30%. Comparing COVID to a super flu would have been useful if people actually knew just how dangerous influenza was and didn't confuse it with flu like symptoms. Its why people refuse to get the flu shot still to protect others because they will say "I got the flu shot and it gave the flu" no you got flu-like symptoms, just like we got flu like symptoms with the covid shot and that reaction protected you from the deadly flu and covid. The same people who refuse to get covid boosters will be the same people who refuse to get flu boosters. If everyone was vaxxed and boosted for both the numbers would be incredibly low for everyone. US science communication just sucks.

The WHO can only advise. They do so, and whilst governments may not head their advise (or their medical community), we personally can.

I do.

I wear a mask so I neither easily become a breeding ground for mutation nor, if I fail, circulate the virus "pretty much unchecked."

Do I get bonus points for neither having had a cold nor the flu since 2019 because of wearing a mask? That's weeks of misery not experienced by me, and by not spreading years of misery not shared in the population. 😷

Much of the map is hatched purple-orange with grey dots, with purple-red-orange counties. Some yellow, mostly in Mississippi watershed. Black and black-dotted counties can be spied in all regions. The state of Idaho stands out as a black-grey hatch surrounded red/orange/yellow hatches in surrounding states.

CDC's weekly #flu update, FluView is out. It's clear at this point the seasonal epidemic is over. But pediatric deaths continue to be reported. There were 2 reported in the week ending April 22. One occurred back in early Jan but one occurred in mid April. The pediatric death toll for the 2022-23 season stands now at 145.
I created this graph, with data from the CDC.

This is a graph showing reported pediatric flu deaths by year going back to 2004-05, the first year CDC started recording them. This year's total to date is 145, which is edging towards the high end for non-pandemic flu seasons. (The toll in 2009-10, during the H1N1 flu pandemic, was 288.)

China has reported a fatal human case of #H3N8 bird flu, only the 3rd known case ever. Virus was found in a wet market where the woman spent time before falling ill. WHO currently assesses the risk of human2human spread of this virus to be low.
Under the International Health Regulations, countries must report human infections with non-human #flu strains within 24 hrs of detection. In this case WHO was informed 24 days after the woman was hospitalized & 11 days after her death.

On 27 March 2023, the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China notified WHO of one confirmed case of human infection with an avian influenza A(H3N8) virus. The patient was a 56-year-old female from Guangdong province with an onset of illness on 22 February 2023. She was hospitalized for severe pneumonia on 3 March 2023 and subsequently died on 16 March 2023.

Stacked area chart of daily 7-day averages for pediatric Unoccupied Beds, Non-Covid Beds, and Acute Covid Beds, for the period from August 2020 through Mar 20, 2023. Hash marks—indicating PICU beds—overlay bottom of each stacked area.

Dotted lines indicate historical and current Hospitals Surveyed (83%), Hospital Capacity Level (71%) and Critical Staffing Level (12%). First has fallen off as psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals have gone to once-annual reporting; second is the ratio of total occupied pediatric beds to total staffed pediatric beds, nationally; last the ratio of hospitals with pediatric beds reporting critical staffing shortages as a share of those that answered said question either 'yes' or 'no'.

Capacity was climbing toward 55K, with climbing occupancy, before plummeting to under 10K in Jan '22. Feb '22 saw gain toward 45K; above in Apr, before trending down to now well below 40K.

That feeling when the FDA doesn't give you your #FOIA but instead confirms something was weird by putting out a whole public statement 👀

NEW: Why Lucira's #Covid + #flu test EUA was delayed

CDRH director Jeff Shuren's statement is meant to "address misinformation", but the FDA hasn't responded to questions about what misinformation that specifically is.

It's likely tied to criticism of the FDA around the timing of the authorization/bankruptcy.
