So, having borrowed a modern A.C. Norman #AngloConcertina for a month or so at the start of the year this week I have bought my own. It’s not perfect, but it is not at all bad and was nicely priced. It is a #Lachenal and dates to around 1900, but we can’t be too precise as it is a “marriage” box which is apparently what #concertina people call a cut-and-shut assembled from several donors to make one working box.
As if I don’t already play too many instruments (badly)…

One of our Ukranian friends sang Реве та стогне Дніпр широкий (The Wide Dnieper Roars and Groans) at a session recently. The lyrics describe a night storm on the river Dnipro by moonlight with woodpeckers drumming and ash trees creaking. The poem was written in 1837 and set to music in 1886. I was told the first printed editions were confiscated by Russian Imperial police (did I get that correct?). I think it's also the signature tune of Ukranian national radio. I enjoyed the sound of this casual male voice choir recording from youtube but if you have a different favourite then let me know in a comment.

The summer before I started high school was when I really started exploring “underground” music by way of the two local college radio stations I could pick up on my AM/FM radio. One of the first songs I recall hearing is “The Day That Lassie Went To The Moon”.
So I picked up the album from Rhino Records in Claremont, and wow! This was a blend of all my favorite music. Very focused on string instruments and a rhythm section powered by more than basic drums.
And they were totally “punk rock”. Lots of humor, weird themes, tons of sarcasm. They even did a country-fied version of Black Flag’s “Wasted”. How cool is that!
Suffice to say this was the start of a life-long love of CVB.

Which gives me an excuse to a link to a song from the album Y Bardd Anfarwol. I've mentioned this before - it's an album of traditional Chinese music, performed in Welsh, by Welsh and Chinese musicians with a mix of traditionally western and Chinese instruments.
It doesn't truly fit in with the #TheSignsTheyAreAChangin theme as it's not bilingual. But I do think it's an interesting aside, as it's in the same spirit.

Some very early first pressing copies of The Freewheelin' #BobDylan contained 4 songs that were ultimately replaced by Columbia on all subsequent pressings. These songs were "Rocks and Gravel", "Let Me Die in My Footsteps", "Rambling Gambling Willie" and "Talkin' John Birch Blues". Copies of the "original" version (in either mono or stereo) are extremely rare.

This is a pro-worker song written in 1931 by Florence Reece in support of striking coal miners in Harlan County, Kentucky, and made famous by Pete Seeger and the Almanac Singers in the 1940s.

Malvina Reynolds was a gem of a human. A big activist, born to two activists, and a great musician to boot. Her most famous song, “Little Boxes” is fantastic. If you don’t know it by name, you’ve most likely heard it.
