Day one of Folktober is the sad Welsh tale of a Gelert the dog! A loyal good boy he was mistakenly killed by his owner because it was believed he had killed their child. But in fact he'd saved the kid from a wolf. No good deed goes unpunished hey!

Never eat Brambles after Michaelmas (today) as the Devil has pissed on them 👿

According to Dartmoor legend, Vixana was an evil witch that once resided inside a rock formation known as Vixen Tor. She would conjure up a thick fog to disorient those traveling through the area and lead them into the adjacent bog to drown. #FaustianFriday

#FolkloreMoment : Once, a man in the village of Werkel discovered to his horror that his wife was a witch. To his great relief, she eventually fell sick and died.
But then he discovered that his young daughter had apparently learned witchcraft from her mother! Distraught, he went to the priest for advice.
"Well," said the priest, "we can't do anything here but to give her something so that she dies as well."
They did so, and since then the man had peace from witches.

So, I'm starting on 娥病与桑落 (Ebing and Sangluo), another piece of #Dai #folklore. While the book is only 50 pages longer (~180 pages vs ~130), the nature of the story-telling is very different and requires a more in-depth look. I've thus decided that I will approach it differently with, perhaps, a more rigorous look.
The book is, as before, published by #Wuhan University Press as part of its Southern Folklore line.

Life Sentence for Professor Rahile Dawut Confirmed: According to a source in the Chinese government, Professor Rahile Dawut (راھىلە داۋۇت, 热依拉 · 达吾提), an acclaimed Uyghur intellectual and expert on Uyghur folklore and traditions, is serving a life sentence for endangering state security.
The Dui Hua Foundation (Dui Hua) had previously been told by a Chinese official that Professor Rahile Dawut was tried in December 2018, one year after her detention, for the crime of “splittism” — a crime of endangering state security — by an intermediate people’s court in Xinjiang. She was convicted and appealed the sentence. The most recent information confirmed that her appeal was subsequently rejected by the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region High People’s Court.
Professor Rahile Dawut’s sentence comes with the supplemental sentence of deprivation of political rights for life.

Today's #MinCup23 vote has my favorite: Rhodochrosite!
There's a legend from South Tyrol about King Laurin's Rose Garden. (That part of the Dolomites is actually called Rosengarten).
The legend tells about a Dwarf king who falls in love with a human woman and elopes with her. However, her human relatives decide she must have been kidnapped, and mount a rescue mission.
King Laurin has a famous rose garden in the mountains, planted in honor of a daughter he lost.

#FolktaleMoment of the day:
Exploding pears
I read a Hungarian Roma folktale today that featured an evil dragon woman trying to kill a man by cursing him with hunger, and planting an enticing pear tree in his way.
Luckily a girl knocked the pear out of the man's hand. The pear screamed so loud it made trees snap. Had he eaten it, she says, he would have exploded from the sound.

PS I have a family of foxes in the garden who regularly try and become our pets by coming into the house and following us around.
`The #Scots cat-sìth or #Irish cat sí is a #fairy creature from #Celtic #mythology, said to resemble a black cat with a white spot on its chest. It is described as being as large as a dog and chooses to display itself with its back arched and bristles erect.
Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. The legends surrounding this creature are more common in #Scottish #folklore, but a few occur in Irish. Some common folklore suggested that the cat-sìth was not a fairy, but a witch that could transform into a cat nine times.`
Source: Cat-sìth - Wikipedia
Today I'm voting for bischofite because it's Permian sea salt evaporate, which is pretty cool.
No specific #folklore for it, but it reminded me of a Colombian folktale about a boy who carries salt for a chief, and gets caught in a rain that washes he salt away. The boy prays to the god Bochica, who takes him on a journey, shows him the hidden riches under the earh, and on a beach teaches him how to create salt pans to collect sea salt.
My third is an interview with Zuza Zak about her wonderful new book Slavic Kitchen Alchemy. This book is a wonderfully illustrated notebook steeped in Slavic lore recreated from memories of Zuza’s grandmothers & her own contemporary research. Many of these are achievable without access to expensive equipment & even if the only nature you can access is a city park. https://bit.ly/3LgKHjO

Fun fact for today's #MinCup23: Galena was Mineral of the Year in Hungary in 2019!
I don't have a folktale for it specifically, but it is a lead ore, so let me introduce you to one of my favorite Hungarian folktale villains:
