The Curative Well of Dänschenburg: In the church of Dänschenburg near Ribnitz there is a permanently wet spot beneath the pulpit which is referred to in legend. Many years ago there was a curative well at this location whose waters had special curative powers against all sorts of illnesses. Soon the reputation of this well spread throughout the entire land. The sick came in droves from all regions. But because the well healed all illnesses, nobody visited the doctors for aid any more. These grew jealous over this and managed to convince a shepherd to throw his dog into the well. Immediately the healing properties of the well stopped working, which was thus filled up. But the spot where it had been has remained damp since that time. Source: Bartsch, K. Sagen, märchen und gebräuche aus Meklenburg, 1879. p. 357.

#FolkloreMoment : Once, a man in the village of Werkel discovered to his horror that his wife was a witch. To his great relief, she eventually fell sick and died.

But then he discovered that his young daughter had apparently learned witchcraft from her mother! Distraught, he went to the priest for advice.

"Well," said the priest, "we can't do anything here but to give her something so that she dies as well."

They did so, and since then the man had peace from witches.

The Man In Two Places: A poor man from Dönberg once gained a short prison term as a punishment. One day he set out to serve his sentence. In the evening of the same day his kin went to bed at the usual time. When the adult daughter woke up the next morning, she immediately rose to prepare the coffee. After she had finished brewing it, she went into the bedroom to bring her mother a cup. Then she clearly saw her father lying in the bed. Out of astonishment she screamed loudly and was only able to report what she had seen after her mother had cajoled her for some time. But the mother called the girl a liar and sent her away. Before she turned around to leave, she stole one further glance into the direction of the bed. But now the father had vanished without a trace. Source: Schell, O. Bergische Sagen, 1897. p. 24.

So, I'm starting on 娥病与桑落 (Ebing and Sangluo), another piece of #Dai #folklore. While the book is only 50 pages longer (~180 pages vs ~130), the nature of the story-telling is very different and requires a more in-depth look. I've thus decided that I will approach it differently with, perhaps, a more rigorous look.

The book is, as before, published by #Wuhan University Press as part of its Southern Folklore line.

Life Sentence for Professor Rahile Dawut Confirmed: According to a source in the Chinese government, Professor Rahile Dawut (راھىلە داۋۇت, 热依拉 · 达吾提), an acclaimed Uyghur intellectual and expert on Uyghur folklore and traditions, is serving a life sentence for endangering state security.

The Dui Hua Foundation (Dui Hua) had previously been told by a Chinese official that Professor Rahile Dawut was tried in December 2018, one year after her detention, for the crime of “splittism” — a crime of endangering state security — by an intermediate people’s court in Xinjiang. She was convicted and appealed the sentence. The most recent information confirmed that her appeal was subsequently rejected by the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region High People’s Court.

Professor Rahile Dawut’s sentence comes with the supplemental sentence of deprivation of political rights for life.

Today's #MinCup23 vote has my favorite: Rhodochrosite!

#Thread

There's a legend from South Tyrol about King Laurin's Rose Garden. (That part of the Dolomites is actually called Rosengarten).
The legend tells about a Dwarf king who falls in love with a human woman and elopes with her. However, her human relatives decide she must have been kidnapped, and mount a rescue mission.

King Laurin has a famous rose garden in the mountains, planted in honor of a daughter he lost.

Don't usually do the hard sell here but bizarrely Etsy is covering a £5 off of orders over £25+ for this weekend only (ends Sunday eve) so head over to my shop - https://blockforest.etsy.com - if you want a little discount.
Offer is open to buyers in UK, USA and Canada only (etsy's rules - not mine).

I don't usually do sales so this as good as it gets!

#FolktaleMoment of the day:

Exploding pears

I read a Hungarian Roma folktale today that featured an evil dragon woman trying to kill a man by cursing him with hunger, and planting an enticing pear tree in his way.

Luckily a girl knocked the pear out of the man's hand. The pear screamed so loud it made trees snap. Had he eaten it, she says, he would have exploded from the sound.

Hello I’m going to do another #introduction
I’m Vanessa a full time professional storyteller. I work with adults and children in various settings like #museums #galleries and festivals and once I did a TEDx talk about finding magic!
My interests are # #london #weirdStuff #esoteric #pagan #occult #folklore #folktale #myths #legends #UntoldStories

PS I have a family of foxes in the garden who regularly try and become our pets by coming into the house and following us around.

`The #Scots cat-sìth or #Irish cat sí is a #fairy creature from #Celtic #mythology, said to resemble a black cat with a white spot on its chest. It is described as being as large as a dog and chooses to display itself with its back arched and bristles erect.
Legend has it that the spectral cat haunts the Scottish Highlands. The legends surrounding this creature are more common in #Scottish #folklore, but a few occur in Irish. Some common folklore suggested that the cat-sìth was not a fairy, but a witch that could transform into a cat nine times.`

Today I'm voting for bischofite because it's Permian sea salt evaporate, which is pretty cool.

No specific #folklore for it, but it reminded me of a Colombian folktale about a boy who carries salt for a chief, and gets caught in a rain that washes he salt away. The boy prays to the god Bochica, who takes him on a journey, shows him the hidden riches under the earh, and on a beach teaches him how to create salt pans to collect sea salt.

My third is an interview with Zuza Zak about her wonderful new book Slavic Kitchen Alchemy. This book is a wonderfully illustrated notebook steeped in Slavic lore recreated from memories of Zuza’s grandmothers & her own contemporary research. It contains natural remedies, recipes & wellbeing rituals with folktales. Many of these are achievable without access to expensive equipment & even if the only nature you can access is a city park. https://bit.ly/3LgKHjO

My second is an interview with a wonderful human being about how food and rituals around funerals can help ease the pain of grief & bring people together. I interviewed Ashley-Anne Masters about Food, Funerals & Mourning in the American South. Although discussions around death can be hard, we talked about how food and humour and ritual can really be of help during difficult times. I hope you are as comforted & uplifted as I was after our discussion: https://bit.ly/3ZgguaI

Fun fact for today's #MinCup23: Galena was Mineral of the Year in Hungary in 2019!

I don't have a folktale for it specifically, but it is a lead ore, so let me introduce you to one of my favorite Hungarian folktale villains:

The Lead Monk

Sometimes also called "Snotty Lead Monk" (🤷‍♀️ ), this supernatural entity can cover the landscape with lead, has superhuman strength, and can turn people into stone. It would make a great #DnD villain.

That’s it, 3 third birthday podcast episodes & blog posts in the bag (well uploaded and scheduled for tomorrow anyway). They are 3 very different episodes and I hope people get something from at least one, whether that’s entertainment, knowledge or maybe even a touch of healing. I’m off now to make noodle soup, play with the cat beast and enjoy making pretty things that might persuade people to listen to them.
