I hope to follow fellow #gamers, #streamers & #content #creators. I play mostly on PC #steam. I usual post memes techs & games related #news as part of brand to separate from my personal account & cluttering their #timeline. Some of you already followed my other account which is imported to this alt account.
But here's the thing. I look at your timeline first. If I like what I see, I'll add you. There are only a few things that will stop me.
Your page is filled with negativity.
You don't follow back.
You post about one topic, and I have zero interest in it. Sorry.

I can think of one reason why some may set up their account to require people to put in a request before being allowed to follow. But that should apply to those you don't already follow. Presumably you've checked they're worth following so surely you want a #followback. If someone who you don't follow follows you, if you check their account and don't like it you could block them. But I only do that in extreme circumstances. Most of us should follow back most of the time. #imho
Sometimes when I try to #Followback I discover I am put in a queue. All I've done is put in a request. I wonder if those who set up their account this way considered the pros and cons. If you've checked I'm worth following why not increase your follower/followee stats by getting an instant follow back? If you follow someone it's in both your interests to speed up your getting followed back. Or am I missing something?
This is Sunday. So, yet again, I'm appealing for all socialists who see this to consider following me and if I'm not already following you I will #followback. All socialists need to follow each other even when we identify differences on certain tactics and strategy, language and more besides. Where wee disagree, don't unnecessarily divide. Strange how I've been here since the first #birdsite exodus and I've only had to block one user (they were a real #douchecanoe). And I think I've reached #criticalmass of accounts followed - my Home feed fills up faster than I can read it all and its all mostly interesting, funny or creative. Guess I follow a bunch of interesting people.

Partly tempted to refrain from posting on Mastodon as I had another 'Rate Limited' warning. However, I want to return to the issue of #followback and encouraging everyone to try to build not just their own account, but of everyone else's. I will follow those who've yet to post much, but on the understanding that you'll fix this pretty soon. If you have posted but they've vanished due to server hopping, you need to once again fill up your page. Why not Boost good stuff from those you follow?
@jimroy Good answer. I think it's a pity that so many people seem to feel the need to hop from one server to another with all the problems of having your previous activity vanish to those you follow and want a #followback from. But if there's no alternative to changing servers, as in your case, the easiest way to build up followers is to get that emptiness gone asap. And that means posting your own stuff and Boosting other people's, especially those you are trying to encourage to follow you asap
@adamdoesit You need to follow more people and following hashtags will help you find new people to follow. Boosting posts helps also.

Let's debate how to grow Mastodon. Something I've argued since joining, or after I worked out how to use this site minimally successfully, was to adopt a #followback approach. So long as followers post stuff, Boosts other people's stuff, follow interesting people, I'll follow back; I don't need to agree with everything they think which is impossible. If I can't see what if anything you're posting, can't see who you're following and who's following you, you're not making it easy to get followers.

A disappointing part about #Mastodon is when someone #boosts / #likes you, and you visit their #profile and you discover you share a lot of similar interests!
So you #follow them - but they don't #followback.. and you never hear from them again..
..so you get in your own head...

I do #followback in virtually every case. However, if I've not followed back someone who thinks I should have I hope they tell me and I'll fix it. Sometimes before following I go down a page and Boost one post after another. When I do this I know I occasionally forget to check that I followed before I started to Boost so many posts. If you post/Boost, and follow many people I'll #followback even if many others haven't done that. It's in all our interest to build each others Mastodon account.

@Gargron Thanks. Glad, and proud, to have been of help. I think it could help increase the followers of a lot of people, especially those with the default avatars, and those who took time to post or Boost anything, to secure follow back for those with legitimate expectations of a #followback.
I am not putting pressure on @Gargron or anyone else central to Mastodon to make changes, but one thing I'd like to see when time and money permits is the ability to see if I'm following someone and if they're following me by hovering the cursor over their name. There is a good reason why I don't want to click to shift to their account, and then back again unless I have to. It's useful to know if I missed someone I should #FollowBack.
Do active Mastodon users want to help this site go from strength to strength or to dwindle into a footnote in the history of social media? If the former, then consider this when it comes to giving newbies a #followback. Don't look down on those with poor follower/followee ratios if they've only just joined and have followed many but haven't encouraged many to reciprocate yet. Encourage them, especially if they're making an effort by posting/Boosting other people including you. #TwitterMigration
One problem that may contribute to a drop off of Mastodon user activity is the inability of those who set up accounts to get many followers, especially when compared to their birdsite accounts. The lack of followers may be because too many are expecting #followback without themselves posting or Boosting anything. This won't work. Please post original stuff or Boost other people's to let potential followers know you take the site seriously. #TwitterMigration

I keep updating my rules for a #followback. If I can see who else they're following and I like the cut of their jib, then that makes me keen to follow. If they've posted/Boosted nothing, then I'll put them on a waiting list until they get their act together. If they've started to post then unless it's totally horrendously reactionary bullshit, I'll follow. So long as you count as an active member I'm more than happy to be your first follower. And please lose the default avatar. Add a bio!
For the first time ever, I have to be very careful about who I can follow on #mastodon. I've always #FollowBack, but my feed is getting #full of posts and boots that I'm missing people I really like. “Wound Man” is an illustration which first appeared in European surgical texts during the Middle Ages. It laid out schematically the various wounds a person might suffer in battle or in accidents, often with surrounding or accompanying text stating treatments for the these injuries. This particular “Wound Man” dates to the 15th century and is part of the Wellcome Collection in London.

Maybe I should clarify my personal rules regarding #FollowBack !
Not that I have to, because we're all free to decide if we follow back or no, but if you wanna know my rules are very simple.
If I know you from somewhere, of course I follow back.
If not, it depends if I feel like we can have nice talks or not, if we like the same things etc. If you seem like a good person to me, I'll most probably follow you back.
But if you never post anything (0 posts), I won't follow back.
