Redbud flower and ramp pickle (adapted after “amazu shoga” Sakai, p.87) with southern magnolia flower, American spikenard and rat’s tail radish.

Allium tricoccum, Aralia racemosa, Cercis canadensis, Magnolia grandiflora, Raphanus sativus var caudatus (nonnative)

See AltText for tasting notes.

#gardening #GrowYourOwn #organic #permaculture #NativePlants #FoodSecurity #cooking #bloomscrolling #florespondence #vegan

A black background and a black speckled plate. On the plate are three white magnolia petals of different sizes. They have a pink puddle of pickled redbud flowers sitting in the natural curve of the petals. Between the petals are long thin rat tail radish pods that are dark pink and green and a cut stem of 3 leaves of a spikenard plant.

Pickle was fine. It didn’t taste as sweet probably bc of the ramp. Very piquant but nice. Has more possibilities.

Magnolia flower raw tastes like pine-sol then like rose then like ginger. It’s very pungent but doesn’t leave a lingering aftertaste. Definitely not for eating raw. Will try a blanching, steaming and pickling recipe if I can find more flowers that are low enough to reach.

Spikenard leaf was like a faint mint with some anise and lettuce. It was ok. Better as a mixed green then a bunch by itself. The stalks were too fibrous to steam/boil even though they were very thin.

Rats tail radish tastes like a tame radish, kinda nice. Like if a sugar snap was daikon flavored.

#gardening #GrowYourOwn #organic #FoodSecurity #florespondence #flowers #plants #perennials #bloomscrolling

Close up of longevity spinach flower or to be precise, floret. It looks a bit like a dandelion on LSD. The individual flowers in the floret are orange tubes darkening to red tips with 2 long yellow filaments sticking out of each flower. It’s an orange explosion.
A close up of a pitangatuba flower. You can barely see the four white petals faded into the background. What you mostly see is an explosion of dozens of white stamens. The filaments are long and white and the anthers are a light cream color and flattened ball shaped. You barely notice the pistil at the center that is a white teardrop shape terminating in a green stigma.

The background is faded shades of green.

Small circular economies are the best for surviving extreme events, short term and long term. If your pantry depends on vast mono-cropped food grown with large quantities of synthetic fertilizer and pesticides, huge distances with various modes of transport to get to you, you are not well prepared to survive climate disaster, crop failure, supply chain disruption, or political upheaval.

If your pantry is supplied by your own backyard with permaculture practices, local variety and seed saving/sharing, seasonal diversity, a barter system, CSA, and interaction of goods and services within your immediate area, you are way ahead of the game.

Purple pearl barley. 1/

This is more than 1/2 my harvest in a 1x2ft space. I won’t grow it again. For the space it takes up and time it takes to grow, it barely makes one serving.

I used normal home compost for fert and it was grown next to beans. My veg need to perform well with this for me to consider replanting and these did not.

#phosphogeddon #organic #GrowYourOwn #gardening #foodsecurity

The pic shows two trimmed heads of purple pearl barley. The one on the left is three times as large as the one on the right. The seeds (rachis) are a dark magenta-ish purple. It has along silvery white awns spiking out from the tops.

If you can imagine a bunch of purple tadpoles with long straight tails feeding at a trough, that is roughly what it looks like.
A bowl full of trimmed purple barley heads. You mostly see the dried awns scattered, striping in every direction. The purple awns are sort of concealed in the clutter.

A fascinating map of land use in the United States. I would never have guessed cow pasture makes up the largest usage, by far, dwarfing housing and local commercial, urban and rural together, by a longshot.

One thing I note in the alt-text - food production land is tiny compared to several other things on the map. If we took only 1/4 of the ridiculously oversized cow pasture land use, currently between 1/4 and 1/3 of the total continental US, and changed that to greenhouse operations, we could have affordable food year round for everybody.

I'm not going to get into it with any vegans, but there would be more sustainability out of that cow pasture land if a big chunk of it was changed to smaller animals, like chicken & lamb - not factory farmed, though. Also more composting, to eliminate phosphate imports by processing & using manure responsibly.

Anyway, it's interesting.

#LandUse #Urbanism #sustainability #FoodSecurity #Wilderness #Agriculture #Economy

https://www.exploredplanet.com/guides/maps-that-show-us-a-new-perspective/

Land Use Throughout The United States

The United States has one of the largest landmasses at its disposal and a very diverse one at that. With 3.8 million square miles to work with, it’s only natural that the land making up the United States has various uses, depending on where it’s located.
Land Use Throughout The United States

On the map itself, the largest block by far, taking what seems to be somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the United States land use, is cow pasture. The entirety of housing and local commercial, both urban and rural together, takes up only an amount of acreage the size of new england, essentially. The next largest land use after cows is private family timberland, followed closely by govt owned timberland. Corporate timberland, follows, and is just a bit larger than livestock feed, the next largest land use. Food we eat literally half the size of livestock feed. If we took only one quarter of the cow pasture and turned it into greenhouse operations, we could feed everyone all year round at very reasonable prices. But we don't.

I think one of the biggest aspects of the war that I think is probably something that we're really kind of just getting our heads around is the kind of #FoodSecurity aspect. [...] We know it's one harvest and that has had complications around it. But I think the second, you know, second, third harvest, it's not just the fact they can harvest the grain this year. They've not been able to sow it. They've not been able to, you know, to prepare the ground, to do all the things they have. So the situation is just going to get worse and worse. Now, that has economic implications for #Ukraine, for sure, but it has implications across the world. [...] because if we reflect on the places that #Ukraine gave grain to are areas that have a real fragility in it in terms of #ClimateChange, in terms of other security issues, including #Yemen, including #Bangladesh, you know, these are areas that suffer anyway.

Since the property I live on has no natural topsoil (like NONE, just grit and rock that somehow grows quack grass and invasives very well) I have been gardening in raised beds. The standing dead log surrounds that came off the mountains around here have finally given up and will go back into the earth. The new frames are cedar that is eco-logged from the mountain across the lake. Not kiln dried and has the smallest trip from there to here. In fact, it is almost impossible to see the area that is logged and has been for the last 30 years. This way is the right way. The riparian areas are not damaged, the wild ungulates have grazing, the nesting trees are not disturbed.
The raised beds will be ready for planting in a couple of days. This may seem like boring mundane work but for me and my family, there is nothing more important.

Food security is not topical in the US/West but it's more prominent in Asia. The farmer base of Asia is in duress as many are small plot farmers. As they age out and are subject to increasingly marginal yields, the societal stability of the world's factory is a bit tenuous. None of this is made better by the large Panda to the North.

#Bees are undoubtedly important, but this study shows that #moths pollinate flowers at a faster rate than day-flying insects. Sadly, many moths are in serious decline, affecting not just #pollination but also food supplies for many other species ranging from bats to birds. Simple steps, such as allowing patches of bramble to flower, can provide important food sources for moths (and a blackberry harvest for us!)

If you want eggs from miserable caged hens with zero quality of life, go ahead and bitch about the price of eggs while searching for dollar-a-dozen ones.

If you want eggs from hens that have names, a big yard to scratch and explore in, fresh air, sun, and hen friends for security and comfort- pay the damn price that small-hold farmers and backyard chicken people need to get to keep the chickens in the first place.

Many of us make our annual #donations to #charity at the end of the year. Consider moving it up a month or two, or making it monthly!

#Housing stability is close to my heart and I support local charities https://www.homestart.org ( #EvictionPrevention with just a few hundred $/tenant) and https://www.rosiesplace.org (independently funded #shelter with great day services for women), as well as https://www.gbfb.org/

Just spotted this on the bird page,

Plant-forward diet as source of food security? Interesting paper. “A transition towards the EAT-Lancet’s planetary health diet in the European Union and the United Kingdom alone would almost compensate for all production deficits from Russia and Ukraine.” #climatecrisis #foodsecurity #vegan https://www.nature.com/articles/s43016-022-00634-4

EU-Ukraine #SolidarityLanes are a lifeline for the Ukrainian economy and key for global food security.

We are now boosting them with a €1 billion investment.

Check out the complete fact sheet here: https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/FS_22_6862

#EUSolidarity #FoodSecurity

The visual describes how Ukraine is important for global food security. At the top, the header reads: "EU-Ukraine Solidarity Lanes — Lifeline for Ukrainian economy, key for global food security." Below, an illustration shows that Ukraine is the 3rd highest global exporter of barley, 4th of maize, and 5th of wheat. Due to Russia's war of aggression, wheat production is down by 35%.

today is likely the last warm dry day for me to work on our evolving #climate #resilience and #FoodSecurity #FoodSovreignty #FoodAnarchy and #herbalism driven #garden expansions until April, so some pics of #plants / @plants from last summer while I wait for the light

Close up view of a psychedelic purple and white passionflower grown from seed as part of an attempt to push the range far north
Top of a stalk of motherwort which I’m obsessed with growing, little purple flowers and fuzzy sharp pointed green leaves
Purple and crimson flower of a pea variety I think is called Schweitzer-Riesen
Crowded corner of a nut tree nursery area showing a bunch of one-year chestnuts and squirrel-proof boxes with (not really visible) butternut and white oak seedlings, some temperate tulsi gone feral creeping in from the left

A quick intro:

I'm a PhD candidate in #History @ Cambridge, comparing British #FamineRelief efforts in India, China, + the Ottoman Empire in the 1870s. Broadly interested in power structures (economic, racial, gendered, religious, sexual) shaping #humanitarianism + #FoodSecurity discourses, past + present.

Interested in following historians as well as policy-makers, journalists, activists + researchers involved in humanitarianism, food security, climate justice, etc.
