September survey continued: surprise! #beetles have foraged under tree cover. Obviously they left clearings and sheltered there. Pleased, that my #forest remains able to provide some shelter despite heat-induced tree mortality. The bad news is: large ground beetles are not breeding as they should be by now. Fauna was mainly composed of medium-sized #Staphylinidae predators. Large #Carabidae are bioindicators for high biodiversity. This says, #biodiversity keeps trending down.

40 years ago today: The first day of October in the North Maine Woods was a warm one — even warmer than yesterday. It was not even a bit chilly when I awoke. The trail today was rugged for this flat lake country. The initial two miles were a climb to the north summit of Nesuntabunt Mountain. The name was bigger than the mountain, but it was still a hell of a little climb.

An image from last millenium, scanned from slide film. The firs since have grown much higher, blocking the view.
I have not visited the place recently. But I imagine this forest may be dead by now. Like large swathes of the non-native coniferous forest of the middle mountains, due to the droughts, storms and pests brought by climate change.

40 years ago today: After the shelter, the AT descended for a half-mile to Pemadumcook Lake, which was even bigger than Lower Jo-Mary. A short side trail led to a point along the shore with an awesome view of Katahdin across the lake, but only the dimmest outline of the mountain was visible through the haze. It looked even closer, but it still seemed like a dream.

40 years ago today: There was no third consecutive night hike yesterday, but I did not miss it by much. At 6:20, the Appalachian Trail passed a small peninsula thrust into an enormous expanse of water. Along the eastern edge, a string of about a dozen aging wooden cabins slumbered beneath giant pines of even greater antiquity along a gravel shore.

40 years ago today: From the bank, it all looked so peaceful. Golden sun-drops swirled innocently over foam-flecked blue and soft breezes stirred the pines. The initial fifteen or twenty yards to the gravel bar was almost anticlimactic. The current was strong, but the water was barely ankle-deep.

Does anyone out there in the Fediverse know whether anyone is reporting on the ecological cost of the war in #Ukraine?
I was just looking at the combat zones and I have to imagine some places are experiencing complete food-chain collapse, mass deforestation, displacement, etc.
I’d also love any suggestions if you have reading on ecological recovery post-conflict in general.

Today we went to Liffey Forest Reserve where there is a beautiful walk to a magnificent tiered waterfall. The waterfall was wonderful, there were great fungi and lichen/moss, and some huge trees, including a 50 metre tall Stringybark with a 3.4 metre diameter.
But my favourite was very small. The forest has great stands of Sassafras and Tasmanian Myrtle Beech trees. Myrtle Beech can live for 500 years, so when I saw this baby growing from a mossy stump, I wondered whether it would outlive the human race.
