Brazil has proposed a new $250 billion mechanism for conserving the world’s tropical rainforests.

The “Tropical Forests Forever” fund, sourced from governments and the private sector, would disburse money to tropical countries that achieve set thresholds for limiting deforestation.

As agricultural areas are limited in mountain regions, they need to be used efficiently and therefore #grasslands often are embedded in #forests with no buffer zones (field margins).

A Legacy of Logging
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-01/ai-analysis-finds-failed-forest-regrowth-after-logging-/103153614

This is an environmental shitshow. Successive governments over the years have mismanaged our forests, and viewed them as a resource that can be extracted from over and over again. Logging by VicForests should have stopped decades ago, and it's been clear that their claims of regrowing / regenerating areas they logged have failed. Claims of carbon sequestration by replanting in cleared forests don't stack up, and it does little to prevent or repair harm to the rain/water/catchment cycle.
The legacy of logging on Victoria is permanent damage to the environment.

For decades, chainsaws have ripped through the #nativeforests of south-east #Australia. Across Australia, Victoria’s #forests have been logged more than any other mainland state over the past two decades.
Now the state is shutting its native #logging industry in a matter of weeks, and the forests that were once given to Victoria’s state-run logging agency, #VicForests, are being returned to the public.

This one hits literally close to home for me. In Oregon's coast range, where I spend about half of my life, clearcutting is threatening water quality for fish, wildlife, and us.

Wood can be a sustainable renewable resource. There are places where it is, especially where Indigenous people manage timber. We're doing it wrong, at a massive scale, and it has to change.

To slow the effects of #climate change and conserve #biodiversity, replanting #trees is vital.

Mixed #forests are especially effective at carbon storage.

Mixed forests are also more resilient to pests, diseases, and climatic disturbances, which increases their long-term carbon storage potential.

The delivery of other #ecosystem services is also greater in mixed species forests, and they support higher levels of biodiversity.

At some point, we lost sight of the fact that to harm nature is to harm ourselves.

A deep purple-grey mushroom, found near Kyle. Possibly a violet webcap? Possibly not. I know little about fungi and this is as far as searching "purple mushroom Scotland " has got me.... 🙂 Stood about 10 to 12cm high if anyone can offer an opinion... all I can say for certain is that I've never taken a photo of one before 🤷‍♂️🙂

A purple-grey mushroom amongst the forest floor. A traditional "toadstool" shape.

#America's new #ClimateCorps will need to be a lot bigger
Climate Corps is rebirth of #CivilianConservationCorps, which put 3M to work during #GreatDepression developing #nationalparks, building roads & trails, & managing #forests. Mountain towns need hands to clear dead vegetation fueling bigger #wildfires. Coastal communities need help restoring seaside ecosystems that absorb storm surge. Urban areas need people & funds to plant trees, mitigating “heat island effect”

"Romania is home to one of the largest and most important old-growth forests left in the world. Its Carpathian mountain chain, which wraps like a seat belt across the country’s middle and upper shoulder, hosts at least half of Europe’s remaining old growth outside Scandinavia and around 70 percent of the continent’s virgin forest.

There’s one obvious, notable beneficiary of this situation: Ikea. The company is now the largest individual consumer of wood in the world, its appetite growing by two million trees a year. According to some estimates, it sources up to 10 percent of its wood from the relatively small country of Romania, and has long enjoyed relationships with mills and manufacturers in the region."

Halfway through summer sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. August 4, 2019, 8:22 PM. The day is done, but half of Astronomical summer still lies ahead.

In the deepening twilight of post sunset, we are standing beside a large lake, looking over a tangled thicket of leafy plants and wildflowers. Both this shore and the wooded far shore are mostly silhouetted in the fading light. Beneath a pale blue gray sky, the lingering gold and orange of the sunset tint the horizon and are mirrored on the slightly rippled water below.

A two-decade-old experiment in the tropical rainforest of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, is beginning to reveal that human-assisted restoration of logged forests can increase the speed of an ecosystem’s recovery.

The researchers also found that planting a diverse suite of seedlings, instead of only one species, led in just one decade to greater biomass and forest complexity.
