Brazil has proposed a new $250 billion mechanism for conserving the world’s tropical rainforests.
The “Tropical Forests Forever” fund, sourced from governments and the private sector, would disburse money to tropical countries that achieve set thresholds for limiting deforestation.
As agricultural areas are limited in mountain regions, they need to be used efficiently and therefore #grasslands often are embedded in #forests with no buffer zones (field margins).
--> well separated #SoilFauna communities, but the missing ecotones impede their exchange.
Our image of a Krefft's glider made it to the cover of the most recent issue in Ecography 🥳
We found that richness of gliding vertebrates was linked to taller forest height and density.

This is an environmental shitshow. Successive governments over the years have mismanaged our forests, and viewed them as a resource that can be extracted from over and over again. Logging by VicForests should have stopped decades ago, and it's been clear that their claims of regrowing / regenerating areas they logged have failed. Claims of carbon sequestration by replanting in cleared forests don't stack up, and it does little to prevent or repair harm to the rain/water/catchment cycle.
The legacy of logging on Victoria is permanent damage to the environment.
For decades, chainsaws have ripped through the #nativeforests of south-east #Australia. Across Australia, Victoria’s #forests have been logged more than any other mainland state over the past two decades.
Now the state is shutting its native #logging industry in a matter of weeks, and the forests that were once given to Victoria’s state-run logging agency, #VicForests, are being returned to the public.

Data pinpoints extensive areas of 'failed' regrowth after logging of the 'most magnificent forests'

An AI-based analysis of 20 years of logging by VicForests, shared exclusively with the ABC, shows for the first time, the potential scale of failed regeneration in Victoria's state forests.
This one hits literally close to home for me. In Oregon's coast range, where I spend about half of my life, clearcutting is threatening water quality for fish, wildlife, and us.
Wood can be a sustainable renewable resource. There are places where it is, especially where Indigenous people manage timber. We're doing it wrong, at a massive scale, and it has to change.

Interesting new paper on community forest governance and forest benefits (carbon, biodiversity, livelihoods). What I like is that they don't assume the benefits can be seen in isolation and that different forests provide different mixes of these benefits. Finally, the look at the odds that particular forms of governance are associated with particular forest types.

“Boreal #forests’ northward advance has been spotty and slower than expected. Meanwhile, their southern retreat has been faster than scientists predicted.

Terra do Meio Ecological Station, a pristine reserve under federal protection, has suffered invasions amid efforts to open up an illegal road cutting through the rainforest.

For #Climate, Protecting Forests Is Way Better Than Planting Trees
By allowing existing trees to grow old in healthy ecosystems and restoring degraded areas, scientists say 249 gigatons of #carbon could be sequestered, equivalent to nearly 50 years of US #emissions for 2022.
#Forests may capture 226 Gt of #carbon in areas where they would naturally exist, 61% by protecting existing forests & allowing them to regrow to maturity, 39% by reconnecting fragmented #landscapes thru ecosystem restoration; #biodiversity is needed, too: https://ethz.ch/en/news-and-events/eth-news/news/2023/11/diverse-forests-hold-huge-carbon-potential-as-long-as-we-cut-emissions.html
Huge loss - they were a critical source for lots of data and reporting, including mine, on supply chain links to #deforestation in SE Asia.
Restoring global forests could sequester 22 times as much carbon as the world emits in a year, according to a scientific study, making the case that trees are a key tool in confronting the climate crisis along with cutting fossil fuels. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2023/11/14/climate-change/forests-climate-fossil-fuels/?utm_content=buffer15526&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #environment #climatechange #forests #climatechange #cop28 #carbon #emissions

How looked temperate #forests like in the last Interglacial period (129,000–116,000 years ago), before Homo sapiens–linked #megafauna declines and #anthropogenic landscape transformation changed the conditions?
A new paper shows that the temperate forest biome was historically heterogeneous with quite some open areas rather than uniformly dense, which is consistent with the dependency of much of contemporary European #biodiversity on open vegetation and light woodland.

Mixed #forests are especially effective at carbon storage.
Mixed forests are also more resilient to pests, diseases, and climatic disturbances, which increases their long-term carbon storage potential.
The delivery of other #ecosystem services is also greater in mixed species forests, and they support higher levels of biodiversity.
"Grazers can bring myriad benefits to landscapes. Bison can improve plant diversity in Midwest #prairies by cropping dominant grasses. Elephants boost #carbon storage in African #forests by munching on less carbon-rich trees.
"But there’s another side to the coin. Their appetite for greenery, particularly when inflicted on already damaged #ecosystems or left untamed by predators, can wreak havoc."

The forest floors are a riot of colour at the moment. I know the orange peel fungus but the others are a mystery to me, I just enjoy finding them. The #seek app, always a good place to start, takes me as far as the agaricomycetes for both, which is not overly useful I know but sounds better than just saying "mushroom" 🍄 🙂 Any opinions welcome 🙂
"Planting one trillion trees is wrong,” said Makarieva. Setting a numerical or area-based target “is lying to people”. Instead, the goal should be to restore ecosystem functionality. Just as mature trees with intact soil store far more #carbon than young tree plantations, so, too, mature native #forests are far more effective at regulating #water and #climate, she said."

A study published in Nature uses satellite data to produce high-resolution maps of rubber-driven forest loss in south-east Asia since 1993 and finds that more than 4m hectares of tropical forests have been lost to rubber plantations in south-east Asia over the last three decades – at least two-to-three times more than previously thought.

#America's new #ClimateCorps will need to be a lot bigger
Climate Corps is rebirth of #CivilianConservationCorps, which put 3M to work during #GreatDepression developing #nationalparks, building roads & trails, & managing #forests. Mountain towns need hands to clear dead vegetation fueling bigger #wildfires. Coastal communities need help restoring seaside ecosystems that absorb storm surge. Urban areas need people & funds to plant trees, mitigating “heat island effect”
"Romania is home to one of the largest and most important old-growth forests left in the world. Its Carpathian mountain chain, which wraps like a seat belt across the country’s middle and upper shoulder, hosts at least half of Europe’s remaining old growth outside Scandinavia and around 70 percent of the continent’s virgin forest.
There’s one obvious, notable beneficiary of this situation: Ikea. The company is now the largest individual consumer of wood in the world, its appetite growing by two million trees a year. According to some estimates, it sources up to 10 percent of its wood from the relatively small country of Romania, and has long enjoyed relationships with mills and manufacturers in the region."

The researchers also found that planting a diverse suite of seedlings, instead of only one species, led in just one decade to greater biomass and forest complexity.
