My @frameworkcomputer laptop seemed to spark (or at least got bright for a fraction of a second) yesterday and suddenly died.

No power indicator- no LED when plugged in, no ability to turn on by button press.

I tried a hard reset by removing and replacing the CMOS battery- no help.

I think it's dead Jim, unless someone has an idea on further diagnostics? I'm not a hardware guy.

Auch wenn es bei der 1. Auflage des #Framework Laptops noch ein paar verzeihbare Kinderkrankheiten gab: der Umgang mit Fehlermeldungen, die Transparenz in jedem Bereich und die Reparierbarkeit ist auf dem Markt einzigartig. Welcher Hersteller bietet die Webcam, jedes einzelne interne Kabel oder auch die (inzwischen nochmal durch das Feedback optimierten) Display-Scharniere einzeln an?!

Werde mir im Zuge des Tastatur-Austauschs auch noch 2-3 kleine Upgrades gönnen, aber an sich ist es nach wie vor ein tolles Gerät👍

Nachdem ich letztens mein #Framework Laptop in klebriger Limo ertränkt habe und jetzt einige Tasten klemmen, zeigen sich die Vorteile des Systems ganz praktisch: man kann jedes (Klein-)Teil einzeln als Ersatzteil kaufen und selbst mit wenigen Handgriffen ersetzen. Es gibt sogar extra Videoanleitungen für alle Schritte, es ist nichts verklebt o.ä.!

Jedes Teil ist außerdem mit einem QR-Code beschriftet, über den man zum Shop und zur gut gepflegten Wissensdatenbank geleitet wird 👌

After replacing #TLP with Power Profiles Daemon (#PPD) and #Powertop, my #Framework laptop went to the normal behaviour when suspending on #Fedora

For suspending to idle (#s2idle), the total battery drain of a full night (9:45 hours) has been of 4%, which means we've went from 1.55%/hour to 0.41%/hour.

I am getting very inconsistent and overall poor results when I suspend (to idle or to memory) my #Framework laptop on #Fedora 38.

I am switching from TLP to Power-Profiles and powertop to see if the results are better, but I've seen a degradation in this regard over time (1/2)

Super article, je trouvais étonnant que personne ne relève que seul deux ans se sont écoulés entre le #Fairphone 4 et le 5, que leur design sont très similaires. Let the anticipation begin. I ordered a #framework 16 laptop, which will arrive in Q1 of 2024 😅

This comic is funny, but also this has been the reality until recently for phones and laptops. Thankfully the EU forced Apple to be reasonable and switch to a standard charging port for the iPhone. One of the many things that I love about my #framework laptop is that it uses a standard USB-C PD charger, so I never have to worry too much about forgetting my charger, but I think this is still a rarity for laptops.

As a former IT hardware tech, I am SO very impressed with what @frameworkcomputer is doing.

The ability to upgrade and re-use parts makes the long-term value of Framework computers simply unbeatable. Their focus on sustainability and eliminating waste wherever possible is what EVERY manufacturer should be doing.

My future computer purchases will ONLY be from #Framework or from companies with similar principles and practices.

After almost a year of experience random hangs on my #framework laptop (and cursing the manufacturer) I've finally tracked down the issue to my external GPU enclosure.

Seems a power saving setting in the nvidia drivers can cause a hang when it's set to anything other than "prefer maximum performance".

I've been blaming Visual Studio, SSD, memory, bluetooth driver. Everything. Until the other day, in frustration of another hang, I randomly unplugged the GPU cable and the hang "stopped"!

GHOST v3 is released! It now integrates a complete solver searching for all possible solutions of your combinatorial problems.

The interface also slightly changed, but you need to change one method name only in your current code: Solver::solve becomes Solver::fast_search.

I have FINALLY ordered myself a #Framework #Laptop (i7-1360P CPU). It's been fun using my #SteamDeck as a laptop but it's time to finally have a proper laptop again.

To reset the motherboard state:

1. Unscrew open the lid;
2. Unplug the touchpad cable;
3. Unplug the battery;
4. Take out the CTR motherboard pill battery with a pin;
5. Wait 2 minutes for remaining current to dissipate;
6. Plug the laptop as is to AC power for 5 minutes;
7. Unplug the AC power;
8. Reinsert the CTR motherboard pill battery;
9. Replug the battery;
10. Screw back in the lid.

Framework's Laptops use USB-C Expansion cards for HDMI, Display, USB, headphone, and Ethernet ports. But up until now the only SD card reader was microSD.

Now Framework is working on a full-sized SD card reader, which the company says has been its most consistently requested Expansion Card.

Too bad I won't have a PC that can play it until I get my Framework.

Yesterday I ordered a laptop from @frameworkcomputer . I haven't actually been /EXCITED/ for a new computer in a long time. My workstation was dying, but replacing it was going to be $1000+ and I drug my feet. Then my ancient laptop's tiny RAM just wasn't cutting it anymore.

So I found I could get a 13" #laptop from #Framework, with more power than my workstation, and it's fully upgradeable in the future even. Excited for this, and to put #Debian on it.

I just realized that when I lost my job email I lost the newsletters which I had started sending to it to declutter my personal email.

What have I missed in the last month of #webDev #framework churn? We doing everything in Rust now?

You know that there is something wrong with our #EconomicSystem and #society when #repairability and #modularity become a feature instead of a liability.

Framework produces laptops that are #modular, easily #repairable and #configurable. Just imagine: you can even decide on which side the charging port should go - just by switching out a module. Crazy I know.

With their new model, they are also partnering with #AMD.

If I need to buy a new laptop, this one will definitely be it.

@plaimbock I can second that. Many shy away from #linuxdesktop #fragmentation whereas they could start off like e.g. #uhe, by offering #linuxaudio builds with limited support. Quite a bunch mentioned that their #framework would not allow #linux builds. #d16, #moog and #rhodes at least said that they would eventually bring Linux support in the near future. Time will tell. ☺️ If #ableton would release their #linux version of #live to the public that could give vendors new motivation too, I think.

if you are doing #WebDevelopment these days, what are you using to build the #UI? Vanilla #HTML / #CSS / #JS? A #framework specific option? A #RAD tool?

I'm working with a framework right now and am tempted to strip back to vanilla as simple things like alignment seem so obtuse. The actual changes obscured under layers of abstraction.

#Framework Computer is a company which claims to “fix consumer electronics” by committing to the #RightToRepair by making modular devices, selling replacement parts, and publishing documentation including fix-it-yourself guides.

I’m excited about it and I couldn’t see myself buying a laptop from any other company right now.

But I and other customers are accepting a risk: current or future owners might sell the company to new owners who don’t share its stated ideals. Replacement parts might be discontinued, backward-compatibility might be dropped, or the product might be killed altogether.

Framework Computer is incorporated as a private, for-profit company. That means it ultimately has only a single mission: to turn a profit. If Framework ever IPOs, its shareholders will have opinions about the company putting such things as “reducing waste” and “right to repair” before its share price.

@frameworkcomputer could encode a commitment to its stated mission by re-registering as a not-for-profit or as a social purpose corporation.

I personally very much hope that its owners will consider this; until then, any claims made by the company about goals unrelated to profit should be taken with a thirst-inducing helping of salt, whether you like the product or not.

@stroughtonsmith I can say on my #Framework #Laptop running Manjaro (Arch derivative) with Firefox I'm not seeing that same issue.

As an A/B test, try Firefox and Chrome/Chromium, see if the issue is upstream from Edge or if Edge itself is just crap.

@thelinuxEXP I feel quite similar. I was thinking the other day if i had to switch away from Linux would I pick Windows or macOS. I feel somewhat 50/50 and the Apple Silicon is compelling. I think what might eek a win for Windows is that i could at least pick hardware like #framework and use WSL.

Also did you try out any of the macOS package managers like #homebrew or #macports ?
