One exception to my regrets about building on #frameworks has been #Python #Flask, which started out as an April Fool's joke — I mean, seriously, no web framework could be this tiny, right? — but ended up turning the joke on itself by demonstrating that less is more and becoming wildly popular.

Advice needed!

Where would be a good place to start for python developer @timdnewman, who would like to build a web app for users to build 2D graphics, flow chart type things?

Some people may hate it... but I think I'll try to build (yet another) static site generator based on #React / #JSX. It will result in static sites that even work without #JS though 😅 Or at least js is optional, just for explicit features.

I tried different static site #frameworks, but I hated all of them. Building user interfaces with JSX is so superior, live rendering with js/react just isn't. But it's also not needed for static sites, so...

Oui.

Web-development question, does anyone have a favourite CSS framework that they like using for new projects? I'm templating a simple web app that I'm putting together for my business and I want it to look "ok" but I don't want to spend any more time with the design than I have to.

If it turns into something useful I will probably pay someone to do a frontend and use APIs, but for now I just need to make it work.

This Casey Muratori quote below is spot on for most other "creative software", incl. generative art/design tools/frameworks... In this context, it also doesn't matter if these are #OpenSource or not, since 99% of people are engaging with these offerings purely as consumers and will be left stranded/struggling once the day of reckoning will arrive (nothing lasts forever, regardless of enshittification)...

Many subfields of digital art/design/engineering currently have one (or a couple) incumbent monopolistic tools/frameworks consuming/sucking the attention of most practicioners in those fields. Each time, the main issue (for users) should be learning, developing, extracting, abstracting reusable skills, underlying metaphors/terminologies, techniques and thought patterns which are more general and independent from those tools, actively exercising the breaking of mental (and practical) dependencies to free & shape one's own creative practice/process.

Artists too (rather: them especially) should own and keep control of their means of production, or at the very least understand them (in some detail)!

Yet, in the bigger picture, the appetite for exactly these things seems to be continuously waning and the "AI" hype theatre is just accelerating & strengthening production dependencies and the strict separation between infrastructure owners & practioners... These are choices each one of us has to and does make, but how many of us are doing so consciously/intently and how many are even just willing and/or able to support others working towards such goals (e.g. by embracing anti-framework and anti-monopolistic design philosophies)...

Another related quote here by Gualter Barbas Babtista (already shared previously):

“If you don’t develop your own technology, you will need to adapt to the language and patterns of the technology someone else developed – maybe in contradiction to your cultural values.”

Boycott #Unity , do not write games for unity. If you have a Unity #tutorial website, delete it. Switch to #opensource #game #dev #frameworks. Make this the doom of this company, they are nothing without the ecosystem they are part of.

I can happily write #code in numerous languages but I've never done #Java (beyond occasionally having to read other people's code). What REALLY puts me off is the trillion different #frameworks. There seems to be a new 'must have' framework every week, then it's considered dead the week after. I can't be bothered to invest the energy into learning something so transient. Relying on other people's frameworks feels very lazy to me. I'd rather learn the core well.

Many #python #web #frameworks urldecode the url before doing url based routing. So they can't distinguish these URLs:

/users/tom/edit
/users/tom%2Fedit

I'm baffled. Does anyone have a quick reference describing why this is wrong? And as in this discussion, why a HTTP reverse proxy that unescapes URL-encodings before forwarding the request would be breaking all sorts of things, even though it is technically possible?

#python #web #framework #starlette #fastapi #flask
https://github.com/encode/starlette/pull/1828#issuecomment-1466793664

A discussion on github about when to url-decode an url, arguing that:

A complicating factor here is that there's the potential that an upstream web server or reverse proxy may be pre-unquoting the URL before we even know about it.

I feel the same! With my latest hobby project (link in my profile), I kept the UI as simple as possible to not waste any time with selecting, learning, using & fighting one of the millions of #JS #frameworks.

But the time will come when I have to replace that UI with one that looks attractive. I'll use #Flutter Web for that; I used it for another project and am absolutely in love with that framework and #DartLang!

So I'm actually looking forward to coding that UI. Weird.

Big news! Since December I've been partnering with newline.co to write a course on #Flutter, one of the leading cross-platform #frameworks for mobile and desktop apps, and I need #beta readers.

The course is written for developers who already know a statically-typed, object-oriented programming language and want to jump into mobile app development as quickly as possible.

Beta access is #free, but limited seats are available.

Are #programming languages and #frameworks deprecating within a short time, nowadays? (Please comment)

The last time I was interested in #webdev I figured out that I wasted a lot of time watching tutorials, because all the containing information were old and useless (even if it wasn't that old). And even if I learnt something, it got deprecated with the next version of the language/framework, because of no backwards compatibility.

Is this only a phenomenon if you're #coding websites (#react #reactnative #angular #vuejs) or is this everywhere?

Being annoyed of stuff like this, I started to learn #assembly (again), trying to create an #snes game, even if I started to try to understand #nes first, because many people recommended it. #ASM works for over half a decade!

I might not be able to #code a good #game and it takes a lot of time, but I think I waste more time, if I learn something and throw away the knowledge after a short time.

Your opinion is important! Please comment.

In 2010, #SteveJobs insightfully compared traditional computers to trucks, saying that most people only need a car (i.e., the #iPad).

https://allthingsd.com/20100601/steve-jobs-session/index.html#:~:text=PCs%20are%20going%20to%20be%20like%20trucks

Similarly, most #developers now only have to learn how to add units to #frameworks without the overhead of lots of conscious choices. And most businesses only need that.

But some applications will always need more than a #framework and some business logic glue #code. And some businesses will always need truckers.

Everybody wants to talk about how #React is a waste of time, but what about AngularJS? What about that monumental pile of horseshit that everyone with a compsci degree insisted we use back in 2013? I've had four straight jobs where I was doing #ReactJS, and now everyone's complaining about it, but nobody says anything about that massive waste of time. #JavaScript #transclusion #webDev #frameworks #frontend

@brion Thank you for explaining why éminences grises in tech are so skeptical about building anything important around the newest low-/no-code #frameworks.

It's not (just) because we're old and grumpy and don't want to learn anything new; it's because we've been there too many times and have the scars to prove it.

@judy2k I switch back and forth between the two as needed. Django for anything complex enough to need a login, Flask for the smaller one-offs, such as putting a web API on top of an existing library. (Did that yesterday for the Detoxify library.)

And if you need something to speak protocols in a real-time and persistent manner, you have Twisted.

https://twisted.org/

#Python #Frameworks

You don't need #ReactJS until your webpage changes. That's why it's called "React", it makes the #DOM *react* to changes in application state. If the state never changes, #React is unnecessary. #webDev #frameworks #web #dev #programming #frontend #JavaScript

One of the very fun aspects of my New Job is getting to figure out our initial front end architecture from scratch, haven't gotten to do that in some while. But of course the current state of front end is quite overwhelming! We need to build some rich, multi-session applications, and also some embedded UI components for partners to integrate.

What would you build with if you could start from scratch today? Would love to check my assumptions a bit. #Web #WebDev #FrontEnd #Frameworks

“We were told writing apps with an HTML-first, SSR-first, progressively enhanced mindset, using our preferred language/tech stack of choice, was outdated and bad for users.

That was a lie.”

It’s fascinating to note the turns HTML/CSS and JS #frameworks took

All abstractions becoming popular at around the same time

But while #HTML / #CSS frameworks peaked after the market had been flooded and the specs accommodated everyone’s wishes

#JS frameworks, fewer in number, ballooned into ecosystems, and sustain themselves by partially self-inflicted complexity

“The burden of proof is on you, frontend framework stans, not the vanilla Web!”—thank you, @jaredwhite
