Just noticed that AWS has #FreeBSD available for Lightsail instances.
Gonna try with something simple.
@DianeBruce Pine64 and #OpenBSD is a definite router solution as long as you plug it into a switch for expansion ports.
I eould suggest pfSense but given the problems peopl are finding with the new #FreeBSD 14 release, maybe #pfSense is nota viable option riggt now.

Installed FreeBSD 14.0 on a Thinkpad T480s. Using lessons learned so far on my test Thinkpad X230, I'm going to make this into my main laptop/desktop.

As you know I'm perfectly happy running #VoidLinux as my daily as it's fantastic and I really love #xbps it's package manager. But just lately I keep getting these voices daring me to go purchase an AX210 WiFi card for my #ThinkPad P14s AMD Gen 1 as it has a Meditek card so it'll run #FreeBSD .
Yes you're going to say that I can't be that happy if I'm willing to take the plunge but I honestly am. Maybe it's just the unknown or even #FOMO ? 🤪
I wonder if realmd can be made to work with #FreeBSD. We can just have doc explaining all the steps involved in wiring up sssd to Active Directory, ipa, &c; but I think anyone with windows servers would be happier just running:

just noticed that the `wireguard-tools` port in #FreeBSD depends on bash, because someone figured it was a good idea to write the `wg-quick` script in bash, someone probably should fix that at some point.

Along with setting up Sway as my FreeBSD desktop, I've setup these desktop tools:

* Icons: papirus-icon-theme
* Fonts: firacode, ubuntu-font
Today, a graphics fix made its way into the official #FreeBSD 14 pkg repo.
I'm not entirely sure which package the perpetrator was, but likely one of libdrm, mesa-libs and mesa-dri.
This fixes an issue where elements on screen wouldn't get updated when the mouse was moving.
This made blender unusable for me for *months* and was finally fixed after today's update.
So, if you had similar issues (especially with an amdgpu-driven card) try updating – things just might work after that. :)

LOWKEY-I installed #FreeBSD 14 on a USB drive to be able to test drive it in lotsa different machines. Just for fun, I decided to plug it in my daily driver (running Debian Sid) to see how it fared.
I now want to replace Debian and make it my new daily driver :heart_eyes: :freebsd:
@JustineSmithies I actually gave up on #FreeBSD because it doesn't work well on any laptop newer than Intel 11th Gen.
Linux and OpenBSD supports 13th Gen Intel AND Apple M2 fine, as someone who owns both. Desktop FreeBSD hardware support is sadly a losing battle.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good VPS with IPv6, the option to run one of #FreeBSD , #NetBSD , #OpenBSD or some #Illumos and cheap low tiers? Literally only need one core, 1-2GB ram and 10GB storage or something along those lines and preferably amd64 or arm64. (OCI is out already, since they refuse to let me create an account. And AWS, Azure and google cloud I'd preferably avoid)
Also yes, I'm totally fine if you suggest a service you work for/you own, just be transparent about it ^^

But depending on one's use cases, BSDs are way better...
Otherwise #Netflix wouldn't use FreeBSD, I'd not have used #OpenBSD for a #Mailserver and #DragonflyBSD would not exist if they had no use-cases.

What you don’t appreciate is how things frequently seem much “simpler” in #FreeBSD as well. I can’t quite tell if it’s because there’s less competition, so effort is invested in fewer approaches, or if the longer history of the project means decision makers use longer timeframes, or some other cultural difference.

I'll never stop emphasizing how underrated mfsBSD is and how convenient it can be.
This morning, I had to set up a FreeBSD server on an OVH machine. The remote console wasn't cooperating when trying to attach an ISO, and it was performing poorly (I'll open a ticket about it when I find the time). Thanks to mfsBSD, I swiftly installed FreeBSD 13.2, but when I attempted to upgrade to 14.0 and update ZFS, it wouldn't boot anymore.
In just five minutes, I prepared an mfsBSD image with FreeBSD 14.0 (not yet available on the official site) and got everything up and running.
Such a handy tool that has saved me from unpleasant situations countless times.
The #LateNightLinux podcasts are looking for a new host. I think we should get a #BSD person to infiltrate them.
