Occasionally I write some free light horror (or are they humor?) stories for the spooky season inspired by my hobby photography. I just posted one of them at the no-paywall site Vocal Media.

Feel free to read & comment. (You can comment here if you don't want to sign in to Vocal.) Or you can just snicker quietly behind your hands, I guess. 🤣

Myrtle Rust. It's the time of year. In WA, watch for it escaping the Kimberly. Why? Check the NSW advice for dealing with the infection:
Removal of infected parts or whole plants

Removing plants infected with myrtle rust, or pruning infected plant parts, can help reduce disease spread and minimise chance of future infection. Affected plants should be removed and disposed of appropriately to minimise the spread of myrtle rust:

Spray infected and nearby plants with a fungicide to kill spores 3-4 days prior to removalBefore being removed, smaller plants and plant parts should be enclosed in a plastic bagLarger plants that do not fit in bags can be cut into smaller pieces and covered with black plastic for 3-4 weeks in a sunny spot. This process is called solarisation and kills remaining sporesWhen disposing of plants, small plants enclosed in plastic bags can be put in a normal waste bin - NOT the green waste bin. Larger plants can be taken to the tip - NOT the green waste section

Does anyone have experience with the #BirchBracket #fungus? I foraged one yesterday (so technically still #FungiFriday ?) and dried it at 50° C. Apparantely one brews a bitter digestive tea from it, but I don't even know how much one would use for a cup.

The often-circulated
#legend of the "almost identical doppelganger" as a simple explanation for the recurring poisonings should be put aside and not spread over and over again. It is not the insidious #fungus, but ignorance, ignorance of characteristics and light-mindedness, possibly also imitation of collecting without background knowledge, that lead to the disaster.

With a bit of expertise, collecting
#champions is not a problem. There are far greater risks with other mushrooms, for example the popular hollyhock sponge and its fatally poisonous confusion partner, the coniferous wood or poisonous subhumain. Not a mushroom for beginners or advanced hobbyists. Even old hands occasionally find it difficult to tell these two apart.

Yesterday, I also went for a walk in the autumnal forest. Just being there, the peace and silence away from the noise of the city, is balm for the soul. And the disappointment is limited when there are no #boletus, #marron or #chanterelles. Here are a few pictures of the Green-leaved #sulphur head - Sulphur tuft - Hypholoma fasciculare , the poisonous #partner in confusion of the edible grey-leaved sulphur head. Especially when the #fungus is already a bit older, the green tone fades a bit, but with these young specimens the green of the #lamellae shone like the luminous digits of a clock.

Fungi are amazing.

You probably already know this, from food to antibiotics to industrial uses, the humble fungus can do great things.

Now, Australian and Hong Kong scientists have created living mycelial sheets that are fire resistant, making them perfect for use as building materials without negative health impacts.

Will these fungal sheets be in your walls someday soon?

I've been out scouting for Downy Mildew after two rain events within a week and it's been overcast since. Lo and behold - new infections on leaves. This is on young Syrah, but I've seen it in all the other blocks I've checked so far - Cinsault, Carignan, Merlot. I'm thinking to apply some copper to protect these leaves, as we still have lots of time for photosynthesis before the first frost...

Hydnum repandum, commonly known wood hedgehog or hedgehog mushroom is a fungus of the family Hydnaceae, its fruitbodies are spore-bearing structures, in the form of spines rather than gills, it originates from Pacific Northwest, USA, it is a mycorrhizal fungus, the fruitbodies grow singly, scattered, or in groups on the ground or in leaf litter, also grows in fairy rings.

Incredible mushroom my sister came upon today, had to share this to the #FungiVerse.

As far as we can tell this is volvariella bombycina aka tree mushroom. Silkkituppisieni in Finnish.

A rare find in Finland. Sighting was made in Southern Finland.

A pair of white capped very odd looking mushroooms growing on a decaying tree stump.

Appearance of the mushrooms:
The fruit body grows out of a thin, egg-like sag that has ruptured. The stems grow out of this, leaving the sac at the base of the stem as a volva. The cap is white to slightly yellowish and covered with silky hairs. On the underside of the cap are closely spaced gills, free from attachment to the stem.

I went walking on a trail in my local park after some heavy rainfall looking for #fungus and found this tiny, delicate one filling the gaps in the tree bark.

I have no idea what it is.

Close-up photo of fungus growing out of a tree trunk. Fungus looks like horizontal butterfly wings with an outer pink colour fading through orange to light tan. There are many of them stacked on top of each other.
Fungus growing on the bark of a tree, following the dips not the ridges.

I noticed a huge fungus at the base of an oak tree as I was walking to the shop this morning.
The surface of the fungus had shedloads of droplets of liquid on it, that had oozed out onto the surface. There was even a fly trapped Jurassic Park style in one droplet.

I'm trying to improve my photography at the moment so I've been blogging* some of my photos recently, and I've realised when selecting them that actually, my palette does tend to be creams, golds and blues when I'm shooting in colour.

I was also thinking just how handy it is to have a digital camera that's light enough to always carry, be it in a phone or a dedicated camera, and that it's really good not to have to send a roll of film off for developing at quite some cost before you know what you're really got photo-wise.

Folks, what would be a great introductory book to mushroom identification and foraging for mushrooms?

I have seen the book Mushrooms, by Roger Phillips, though I fear that might be too UK specific?

I am EU based so I suppose one that covers that area more? Unless that's not such an important factor.

#fungus #mushtodon #photography

We see, from above, a semicircular shelf fungus in shades of brown and white. It grows from the side of a lichen-covered tree branch. Its colors are concentric rings radiating out from the point of the fungus' birth: cinnamon brown near the branch, then a thin, unevenly-wide ring of white, then brown fading to white at the scalloped edge. Atop this fungus is a splattering of other fungi: something fuzzy white near the branch, and a splat of brown and white across the white ring.
