Encouraged that the battery plant is progressing in Marshall Michigan although it will be smaller. Encouraged that the Governor has signed that Michigan will be climate neutral by 2050. Discouraged that groups have come in and riled people up in my state saying solar pv and wind generated power is dangerous, but nuclear is our only choice and safe when the opposite is true. I am praying hard Michigan gets two district thermal storage demonstration sites in 2024 along with (so far not discussed) home demonstration thermal storage projects.
Key strategies in my book. 1. Don't wait for the gods to choose to support renewable sustainable technologies - we lead and demand they follow or they become disempowered. 2. Remember efficiency is always cheapest in the long run. 3. Energy storage doesn't just mean expensive batteries but things as simple and powerful as a thermos, a blanket, a sweater multiplied by millions. Most of my showers rely on induction heated water in a vacuum tank (giant thermos) that maintains safe temperature for as long as 24 hours after being heated.
4. Note to myself: The answer is not technology stupid!!! Its perspective, viewing all thought, your life, your choices to become better at not consuming more of the planet than it can replace. You have always been surrounded by opportunities to live more elegantly, at the same time more simply. You've simply been told it could not be done and you embraced something that's not true.
5. Set goals... continue to use my mist shower, solar cook in Michigan winter, reduce my heat pump and electric bill while being warmer. Prove what can be done continuing to choose to live less than $30k a year.

Am Montagabend fand die erste öffentliche Veranstaltung des neuen FH-Lehrgangs Nachhaltigkeitskommunikation und Klimajournalismus statt. Bei der Feier danach hat sich eine kleine Gruppe lange mit Torsten Schäfer unterhalten. Er hat viel über journalistische Projekte erzählt, die mit der Erforschung von Tieren und Biotopen zu tun haben. Auf dem Weg in Richtung Bahnhof nach der Feier hat Torsten dann auch Themen wie Deep ecology und Deep adaptation angesprochen.
Als ich allein war, ging mir der Satz „Es geht ums Leben!“ durch den Kopf. Er fiel mir wie eine Überschrift ein—für die Eröffnung und den neuen Lehrgang, für das Blogpost, das ich am Dienstag veröffentlicht habe, für die Themen, mit denen ich mich seit ein paar Jahren beschäftige, und auch als positive Bezeichnung der Haltung, die mit „Eco-Anxiety“ gemeint ist. Für mich drückt das Wort „Leben“ aus, was es wertvoll macht, sich mit ökologischen Krisen auseinanderzusetzen. Das Leben bildet einen Horizont, der diese Krisen umfasst und über sie hinausgeht.
Ganz unterschiedliche Texte, die ich in der letzten Zeit gelesen habe, bestimmen für mich mit, wie ich diesen Satz verstehe: Schriften zur ökologischen Ökonomie und das Buch Der Große Krieg (Münkler, 2017) von Herwig Münkler.
„Es geht ums Leben!“—das gilt für die ökologische Ökonomie, die Wirtschaft als Energie- und Stoffwechsel mit der Natur analysiert und auf ein Wirtschaften abzielt, das die Voraussetzungen für die Lebensprozesse, auf die wir angewiesen sind, bewahrt und verbessert. Letztlich orientiert sie sich an einer regenerativen Landnutzung, nicht an der industriellen Produktion, die auf die Förderung von Material angewiesen ist, das im wirtschaftlichen Prozess zu Abraum und Abfall umgeformt wird—etwa zu den Treibhausgasen, die die Erde erhitzen. „Degrowth“ bedeutet, diesen Materialverbrauch und die Produktion von industriellem Abfall zu reduzieren, statt sie immer weiter zu steigern. Möglich ist das nur über eine gerechte, nicht vor allem profitorientierte Nutzung der vorhandenen Ressourcen.
Münkler stellt in „Der Große Krieg“ ausführlich die Materialschlachten des ersten Weltkriegs dar. Es zeigt—auch wenn er sich damit kaum explizit beschäftigt—wie die technische Infrastruktur und die Fähigkeit, sie auszunutzen und zu optimieren, den Ausgang des Kriegs 1914-18 und die Welt danach bestimmten. Im 20. Jahrhundert, das für Münkler wie für viele andere Historiker als Epoche erst mit dem 1. Weltkrieg begann, war „Leben“ keines der politischen, intellektuellen oder kulturellen Themen, die die öffentlichen Diskurse bestimmten. Wenn man von Jahrhundertthemen, von über Jahrzehnte bestimmenden „public issues“ sprechen kann, dann waren sie mit Wirtschaft (nicht im Sinne der ökologischen Ökonomie), Technik und Gesellschaft verbunden.
Vor dem 20. Jahrhundert hat sich sicher schon das konstituiert, was wir heute als „Leben“ bezeichnen, das Leben im Sinne der Biologie und der Medizin. Der Vitalismus und die Entgegensetzung von Leben und Mechanisierung und Industrialisierung sind älter als das 20. Jahrhundert. Zu einem zentralen öffentlichen Thema wird das Leben aber erst heute, angesichts seiner Bedrohung. Als Teil dieses Prozesses kann man verstehen, dass sich die Erdsystemwissenschaften etabliert haben, die untersuchen, wie das Leben den Planeten, auf dem wir leben, formt und von ihm geformt wird (Zukunftsreport Wissenschaft. Erdsystemwissenschaft – Forschung Für Eine Erde Im Wandel., 2022). Eng mit dem Leben als „public issue“ verbunden ist auch das Konzept der planetaren Gesundheit.
Das Leben—nicht im Sinne der überzeitlichen Entgegensetzung von lebendiger und toter Materie, sondern im Sinne des einmaligen, zusammengehörenden Lebens auf der Erde und seiner Bedingungen, also dessen, was Latour mit Gaia meint (Latour, 2015)—ist zu einem epochalen Konfliktfeld geworden, auch wenn es noch immer von Konflikten aus den vergangenen Jahrhunderten überlagert wird. Seine Weiterexistenz wird mit der Verschärfung der Klima- und der übrigen ökologischen Krisen immer öfter auch zum zentralen lokalen Thema. Die Konfliktlinien werden dabei mit davon bestimmt, ob es technischen Ersatz für die Prozesse gibt, die für menschliches Leben in unserer Zivilisation nötig sind, ob sich also z.B. die CO2-Absorption auch technisch regulieren lässt. Unterdrückung, Ungleichheit und Ungerechtigkeit werden nicht mehr nur als soziale, zwischenmenschliche Phänomene definiert, sondern in ökologischer Ökonomie und politischer Ökologie in Bezug auf den Umgang mit den Ressourcen, die für das Leben notwendig sind, wie Klima, Wasser und Boden. Wir erkennen, dass der Kapitalismus durch seine materiellen Voraussetzungen, vor allem durch fossile Energien, mitdefiniert wird, dass er nicht nur als soziales, sondern auch als ökologisches Phänomen begriffen werden muss.
Für viele Vertreter dieses Kapitalismus ist ausgemacht, dass sich Leben ersetzen lässt, bis hin zum transhumanistischen Ideal eines vom biologischen Organismus unabhängigen Bewusstseins. “Es geht ums Leben!” bedeutet diese Ersetzbarkeit des Lebens in Frage zu stellen, und zwar nicht nur als theoretische Möglichkeit, sondern als eine Praxis, die das Leben gefährdet. Es gibt keine ontologische Sicherheit über die Unersetzbarkeit des Lebens. Niemand weiss, in welchem Ausmass es sich modellieren, simulieren und steuern lässt. Aber wenn das Leben ersetzbar ist, dann sind wir selbst als Lebewesen davon nicht ausgenommen.

Gaia is Now Finding Planets. Could it Find Another Earth?
The European Space Agency's Gaia mission characterizes the position and movements of more than a billion stars in the Milky Way. It uses a technique called astrometry, measuring a slight change in the position of stars from year to year, and it's so sensitive it has even detected the gravitational wobble planets induce on their stars. How far could this technique go? According to a new paper, an extremely precise astrometry mission could detect the Solar System's giant planets within about 100 light-years and even find Earth within 30 light-years.

@davidbrin has a clever novel about the 'near-future': Earth (1990) in which the #perovskite crystal structure of the lower mantle is an essential part of a plot twist.
The novel's held up pretty well. Time has past parts of it by. Other parts were remarkably prescient, and some haven't yet happened.

An interesting paper on movement of #stars in the Milky Way based on #Gaia observations.
The authors show that the movement of stars is fully Keplerian up to distances of 26.5 kpc, with a decrease in rotational velocity as a function of distance.
So what happened to dark matter than makes the rotation profiles of similar nearby #galaxies flat?
