I committed to self-care last night, to resting and trying to shake off this virus. Therefore, to not force myself into playing a game.

At 11:30pm, having spent a good chunk of the day either asleep, or at least in bed, my brain was having none of it.

Got up, and decided to try and play something cozy & chill. As Steam were running a "Cozy & Family Friendly" sale/promoted category, I thought I'd click through and see what was on sale, and there was Carto, a game I've owned since Sept 2021.

Carto is indeed a cozy top-down puzzle game, with a unique gameplay mechanic. As young girl, travelling with your granny on her airship(!), an accident leaves you stranded, and collecting pieces of a map.

Each section of the map is square, and you can open the map, and rearrange the pieces of the map to navigate to different places, or solve puzzles BY rearranging the map pieces.

It was perfect for "I'm too tired to fall asleep", and kept me playing until I was sleepy enough to sleep; I went to bed and was out like a light.

This is a game that would also work great on a big screen, via SteamLink, so if you've got that kind of setup, it's a great way to chill out.

I'm from Canada, so the familiar title of this DOS classic for me is Out of This World. In other regions of our world it was known as Another World or even Outer World. I never beat this game! In fact, I don't think I got very far at all. I should really give it the ol' college try. It left a lasting impression on me, I would watch the opening cinematic over and over and over. I only have the base game for #TheSims4 plus Desert Deluxe and Blooming Rooms and I wish I had more (I’m trying not to splurge) but I’m still having fun with what I have.
I made a bookshop/café (that isn’t functional but I loved making it anyway) and it’s the kind of place I’d love to visit in real life. I made a beautiful rooftop patio where I imagine people book the space for special events like small weddings or birthdays.

There’s a nice staff room with a small kitchen area and their own washroom and eating area because I know what it’s like to work in that kind of place and usually you have no space of your own or only a tiny storage room.

My kid and I made some custom Miis on the Wii after finding a site (https://MiiCharacters.com) that has a database of custom ones and step by step instructions on how to make them. I found (and my kid made) the David Letterman one, because I thought that would be amazing, to be able to race karts and motorcycles as David Letterman. 🤣

In Mario Kart, there's a thing where you can race as the same character. My son and I noticed that when you both race as Daisy with bikes and you both place, it randomly assigns a head to one of your characters so they won't both be the same.

So that's how Dave in Daisy's lovely yellow dress happened. A hilarious result. 😂🤣

Following up, you can also get Aspects by completing some dungeons. Those aspects appear in your Codex of power (occultist). The gear-extracted aspects appear in a tab in your inventory.

Also, it would have been so much easier if someone explained this to me, so here goes:

‘Aspects’ are just the unique affixes to orange/legendary gear. You can ‘extract’ an aspect at the occultist, which destroys the object, but now you can attach it to any yellow/rare or above gear.

This means if you get a good legendary early in the run, you don’t have to run around with low level gear just to keep the special ability.

In the early game you don’t really need materials too much, but you do need gold. Better to sell the gear you pick up than to salvage it unless you specifically need something.

I just downloaded the game Saints Row (2022) and I have never seen so many accessibility features before. It’s amazingly thorough 🥹

Not only the usual sound and visibility features but also there’s specific gameplay settings like “tough enemy frequency”, “vehicle combat difficulty”, “timed objective difficulty” and five other challenge setting sliders (on top of the many other gameplay and control settings) instead of the usual easy (exploration)/ medium/ hard type of slider.

Plus they clearly describe what each slider does and (when applicable) have a demo of what the change looks like.
This really ought to be the norm for all games (it’s becoming more so with newer games but there’s still a long way to go to make it mainstream).

No, that is not a typo. Yes, this is the original Max Payne. No, I have never played it. Yes, this will be hard to review.

Max Payne is a... come on, you know: third-person shooter, undercover detective is framed, goes rogue to try & get his life back.

I'd started Max Payne at some time in the past, & closed it after three minutes. Possibly because it's buggy as hell.

As the game starts, "Remedy" pops up on the screen; "Wait... the people who made Control?" It added a new lens with which to judge the game.

Unfortunately, it doesn't help much. I can see why Max Payne was so groundbreaking in 2001, but almost 22 years later, it hasn't aged well.

Firstly, the face-tech that was amazing in 2001 makes Max look constipated, and that's a hard thing to get past. It makes the game feel cheesy now.

Secondly, it is quite buggy. Kudos that it still runs in 2023 (at 2K res!), but audio dropouts & random freezes make it tough to want to keep playing.

However, there's a core to the story there, and a foreshadowing of Remedy's future storytelling prowess. I can see why they're remaking it; I think I might wrestle with it for a bit longer.

Ori and the Blind Forest is a Metroidvania platformer, and it's utterly gorgeous.

The prologue broke my heart a little bit. I don't know quite what else to say about this. The sound design is also wonderful, immediately drawing me into Ori's world.

It seems that Ori's goal is to restore life to the forest, but I haven't played enough of the game yet.

However, I wanted to keep playing, which is a significant change since the start of the year.

One of the odd things about playing so many platform games over the past few months is that, in something that has genuinely surprised me, I do seem to have improved at my platforming skills.

It's still a struggle, and I'm not going to be playing anything on hard mode (or probably even normal), but on easy mode I find that platformers go from something that just provides me with endless frustration, to a challenge that feels rewarding.

Ori and the Blind Forest is captivating, and is:
