Bye bye rickety old shed. It’s time to transform you into something new. I’ll use as much of the old shed and a small tool shed in making the new shelter as possible.

The shelter has an end window with a recycled white upvc windowsill and a window fitted on the front facing wall. In time another window will be fitted next to it. This photo was taken before the rickety shed next to it was taken down to make room for constructing the second half of the shelter.

- Smooth blue aster, flopped over. I wish I had Chelsea Chopped it in June, like I did with my New England asters. In front are seed pods of Butterfly milkweed.
- Black eyed Susan. Growing through my patio. Gotta admire that spirit.
- Heath aster and Indian grass. I wish this aster were less floppy too.
- Brown eyed Susan. Blooms are very strong, no signs of drying out.

I harvested some mint and basil this morning. For maximum aroma and flavour they're both best harvested in the morning before the day gets hot. Washing is optional but I washed them to remove any dirt and bugs and dried them with kitchen towels. Loose leaves from the basil were set aside on a tray to dry separately.

Autumn is barely here but the umbrella leaf (Diphylleia cymosa) is already crisping up. It’s a gorgeous plant, related to May apples and native to Appalachia. Just look at those red peduncles blaze in the autumn light. This is its first year in this spot, and it’s suffered from either too little water, too much sun, or both. I’ll upgrade its drip line, but if it does this next year I’ll need to find a new spot for it.

I know summer is over when these begonias start blooming. We think of them as annuals—bedding plants or hanging pots— but from USDA zone 7 and up there are a few Begonias that are perennial. This is an 8 year old clump of Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana ‘Alba’ (aka big white begonia). Native to Southern China and Japan. Can be picky about conditions: rich, consistently moist soil, some morning sun will do them well.

Some green plants growing profusely from a raised bed with a concrete wall around it. The leaves are large and ovoid and crinkly, with prominent red radial veins converging on a red dot near the petiole. Small white flowers shaped like cowrie shells are clustered above them on juicy stems with red nodes.

The flower stems are bright pink. These are dripping with moisture from a recent shower so the petals are translucent and water droplets are clinging to them.

Hello. I recently came across this whacky plant for the first time and still can't quite believe it. Seems its a Euphorbia Shorty’.

What's striking to me is the colour combination of small lime yellow flowers against narrow blue-green leaves. See what you think.

This gorgeous scene might be mistaken as part of Livia’s garden fresco but this is a later example. This fresco comes from the House of the Golden Bracelet at Pompeii. The idea of garden decorations such as pillars, masks, and frescoes with frescoes is at play.

Harvested a few kilograms of Atomic Red carrots today. 🥕 🥕

The soil in the tub is now covered with the greens of the harvested carrots to dig it under in a few days.
In the background to the left you can see a Habanero plant with lots of ripe orange Habanero chilis.
