I think we'll get lucky and only lose 3 Rouge de Marmande tomato seedlings to the red spider mite attack. We needed a bare minimum of 12 plants to get a decent yield for canning, hoping we will get 17 out of 24 seeds planted #gardeningAu

Green beans jumped up so quickly that we had not gotten the bird net up in time to stop fresh salad lovers from picking the growing tips out of a few. 6 left out of 10 seedlings. Red spider mites are truly evil. You can't see them with the naked eye. You can only detect them by the damage they do by piercing the underside of the leaves hundreds or thousands of times which causes leaves to collapse in short order, 24 hours or so. This is super bad when they attack seedlings, which may only have a couple of leaves. I had some now-banned miticide left over since 2002 which stopped the mite attack immediately but we will lose 2-3 plants. #gardeningAu

From the Garden rounds today.....
๐ฎ It is quite overwhelming in the garden atm. So much is in flower. The cumquats - oh my - they are covered in flowers and the lime is beginning to blossom.
๐ฎ Oh the scent!
๐ The quince is in full flower, and the apricot is starting.
๐ผ Nasturtiums are everywhere. EVERYWHERE. Yellow and red.
๐ชปThe sage is covered in flowers.
๐๐๐๐ So many bees, their humming is so audible.
๐ฑ My job today was to pick enough nasturtium seeds and rocket pods for a small jar of pickles. It is backbreaking work, let me tell you. Not too many rocket pods large enough to pick yet, but I got quite a few nasturtium seeds. I'll clean these (pic) and pickle them tonight, and pick more in a couple of days.

I thought all chillis hung down, but no - I present my nonconforming rebellious anti-gravity upright chilli.

What ever happened to @NessaUndreza ? Where did you go, Nes?
Panic stations. Red spider mites have gotten into the Rouge de Marmande seedlings which have been doing so well. Might lose 3 of them. Can't buy miticides in Aus anymore but I have a few ml left of an abamectin based miticide I bought in 2002... it still works, used some a couple of years ago. Hope it can save the rest of them #gardeningAu

This is exciting - this chilli plant, which has over 20 green chillies growing currently, has just started a red one!
What's going on?
Is this triggered by the 3 mega-hot days we've just had in NSW?

Cheeky rat climbed up on top of the motion detecting camera in the back garden last night, this is the tail ๐ค #gardeningAu

I heard this trap spring so went out to check what we caught. We have inadvertently caught a possum before. I need to release those quickly. Another rat scurried away when I picked up this trap. We've got to keep putting traps out to have a hope of keeping any of the upcoming tomato crop. #gardeningAu

We are not good at raising seeds, we usually chicken out and buy advanced seedlings. Bought a heat mat and made a humidome, this paid off with sprouts in 11 days.
Sun hardening tomato seedlings going well, day 3, early morning oblique sun for 2 hours. Leaves gaining size without more stem growth. #gardeningAu

@Woodknot Where are you Steve? I am guessing Australia? I suspect these are Orb Weaving Spiders, perhaps the Golden Orb Weaving Spider. I get them in my garden. They weave magnificent webs which are incredibly strong, and glint when the light catches them.I try to leave them in place if they are not over the garden paths, they are so beautiful.

The plant fair was fun, though I feel for the exhibitors sitting in the heat! This pair of ducks parked themselves in the shade under/next to a succulent stand and were hoovering up leaves dropped by shoppers.

My sugar snap peas are growing well. This week I saw the first pea flowers. I planted the seeds in the basket on the left 4 weeks earlier than those in the basket on the right.
The basket on the right has scented daffodil flowers as well as the small pea plants. I planted them because Office Kitty likes smelling flowers - see my profile photo.

Over the last summer our lemon tree developed such a bad lean we had to shove a table against it to support it. The previous owners had been pruning it away from the fence but had not been pruning the branches leaning over the garden so it had become quite unbalanced.
Over the last 6 months we have been giving it a substantial prune. This morning we took the last 2 big branches off. The tree now no longer needs the table for support.
And we can now find a new home for the table which is too big for our inner #Melbourne backyard.
A few more this morning. Shades of 2017-18 where we got plants in the beds by the end of September and were harvesting in late November, pulled in close to 100kg total by March because we were able to put in a 2nd crop. Really need a big crop after fighting for 40kg through the rat attack last season.
Trophy Housemate is trialing a coroplast rat barrier, which she has dubbed the 'spectacularly creative rat attack moat' or SCRAM for short.

Wondering if rats are stupid enough to fall for my tricks.... 6 months ago in autumn I planted elephant garlic and got nothing. Spring hits and I get a couple of shoots. From the Garden rounds today...
It has been 2 months since I did a garden rounds post. Cold weather does me in and I don't spend as much time gardening. Consequently it gets overgrown and the first few weeks are clearing and weeding and pruning.
The weather has been so warm lately, I am beginning my planting and clearing about a month or so earlier than usual. Today I gingerly raked up the heaps of leaves on the front garden paths. Just in piles. I haven't lifted them into the barrow yet #SoreBack
๐ฟ I picked the first broad beans today - quite a handful, so they will make a nice addition to dinner, with a few of the tip leaves as well.
๐ต๏ธ The camellia is covered in flowers
๐ฎ The borage has gone beresk already - so early! The bright blue flowers are everywhere. And so gorgeous.
๐ท Nasturtiums are everywhere too, with their bright gold and red flowers! They have climbed into the cumquat tree and are all over the paved area around the garden shed. Also encroaching paths in other areas.
๐ There are a few bees about, but I will check earlier in the day next time.
๐ณ I am soaking the roots of the heritage fruit trees delivered this week, for 24 or so hours, and have planned where to put them. The weather is so warm and the plants are shooting, so I will put them straight into their spots. Fingers crossed my back will be healed enough to dig some holes.
๐ณ The quince tree is shooting new leaves.
The gymea lily in the front gardens stored up energy for 5 years to be able to send up the 6m flower tower. The flower is now forming and will go kaflooey in spring. The plant will die back after this amazing display. What a showboat! #gardeningAu #bloomscrolling
#garlic2023 looks generally ok but I don't like the leaf tip purpling. This is indicative of a nutrient deficiency. We put a lot of moo poo in the bed and pH tested at 7, so it ought to be ok, obviously isn't. We hit them with a water soluble fertiliser yesterday. Let's see if that fixes them up. #gardeningAu
We had a battle with rats in the gardens last summer. We're declaring open rodent hostility with asymmetrical technology capabilities. Lawyer up ya sneaky bastiges! #gardeningAu
The excitement continues - the first chilli continues to grow, there are at now at least 10 chillies on the flourishing plant, and both the smaller plants produced a flower-thingy today.

Another suburban #gumtree, featuring its unique trunk patterns, akin to typical army fatigues.
The different colour of bark patches are in fact varying layers that have aged over the months. The lighter shades, obvs, are the newer layers.
This beauty is at least 60 foot tall and has most likely been around for longer than most of us, even though itโs a relatively mid-aged tree, Iโd suggest.

What I am really happy with is that people have completely stopped dumping rubbish here. It shows what a difference it makes when people can see a place is cared for and it looks pretty.
However, you will notice a dumped shopping trolley next to the garden in one of the photos. That is still an issue. I caught one of our neighbours dumping a shopping trolley in front of our place about a month ago. I ran up the street with the trolley shouting "you've forgotten your trolley". I knew and he knew he hadn't 'forgotten' it but it helped him save face as I gave it back to him.
A couple of hours later I saw he dumped it further up the street.

The foliage in the back half of the garden is more restrained but I am still happy with it as the growth of leaves shows the plants are growing well
Our garden is now 4 months old and flourishing. Some nasturtium seeds I had planted months before our gardening bee had laid dormant in the ground for about 5 months. After we planted the other plants the nasturtiums surprisingly sprouted.
We haven't had much rain for a month but now that the garden is largely covered by leaves and mulch there are no signs of lack of water.
I am hoping the garden won't need much water over the summer.
#StreetGardening #Melbourne #GardeningAU
I went to my mother's place and did a lot of pruning. Then with those cuttings, plus some very cheap bulbs I organised several volunteers to move the existing plants and plant the cuttings. A couple of us planted cuttings in pots to give to neighbours and left pots with cuttings in the new garden for people to help themselves.

It is a hybrid flowering plant in the genus Magnolia and family Magnoliaceae.

I read with note that it is one of the most commonly used magnolias in horticulture, being widely planted in the British Isles, especially in the south of England; and in the United States, especially the east and west coasts.

There are over 1500 different species of native #Australian bees
Some bees are as tiny as 2mm with the largest being around 24mm.
It is thought that a honeybee produces just one half of a teaspoon of honey throughout its entire working life.
In just a single day a queen bee can lay 3000 eggs.
There are on average around 55,000 worker bees in a bee colony.
A honey beeโs wings flap 11,400 times a minute, which creates the bee buzz - as in, how is this even remotely possible!!! ๐ค๐ฎ
A queen bee lives for up to two years.

Itโs botanic name is #NarcissusTazetta and many varieties and colours are popping up in many suburbs here atm.
Mostly observed are yellow, but these cream/yellow variety are growing with vigour in #ormond #Australia on a roadside verge.
They spout and grow from a bulb and hang about for anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on conditions, location, soil etc I read with interest.
Interesting facts;
There are at least 25 different daffodil species and up to 13,000 hybrids.
They're the official 10th wedding anniversary flower.
Daffodils contain sap that's often poisonous to other plants.

#BanksiaEricifolia, the heath-leaved banksia, or lantern banksia, is a woody shrub native to Australia.
It grows in two separate regions of Central and Northern New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range.
Well known for its orange or red inflorescences, which contrast with its green fine-leaved heath-like foliage, it is a medium to large shrub that can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and wide, though is usually half that size, like this one.
It normally โflowersโ in autumn but this is stretching on (does so in cooler areas) into mid winter, here in Melbs.

More bush / forrest pics from #Fernshaw, #YarraRangersNationalPark in #victoria #Australia.
The #Gumtreeโs and #Ferns here, are epicโฆ densely populated and happy and healthy.
The tall gums provide the perfect shade canopy for the ground dwelling ferns, which thrive all year round.
This day (pictured) ranged from 3 - 9 degrees Celsius (37 - 48 F), depending on the altitude.
Surprisingly, even during mid-winter, small bright green fern fronds (called โfiddleheadsโ) were in the early process of unrolling on a number of these plants.

I think this is a #manuka. Aka LeptospermumScoparium, (Mฤori pronunciation: maหnสka), New Zealand teatree, broom tea-tree, or just tea tree.
It is native to New Zealand and south-east Australia.
Its nectar produces Mฤnuka honey.
Love itโs tiny flowers - this series of bushes measured around 4 x 2 metres and was waist height (around a metre).
Pic taken just on sunset.

Good morning!! (Arvo, evening or night! ๐)
#NarcissusJonquilla, commonly known as jonquil or rush daffodil, is a bulbous flowering plant and is a species of daffodil.
It is native to Spain and Portugal, but very much at home here in #Melbs.
Such a mood lifter, especially blooming during our winter months.

I had procrastinated on planting those hyacinth bulbs so they looked a bit tired by the time I put them in... but they are growing! Hurrah

Wattles are out in force and blooming profusely - and right on cue, now in Melbourne.
This tree is quite large and the yellow blossoms, generous. The scent of this thing was pungent.
#Wattle is known for such an impressive attribute, as well as their bursts of yellow, of course.
Theyโre really something else!

#BanksiaPraemorsa, commonly known as the cut-leaf banksia, is a species of shrub or tree; itโs a #Banksia.
It occurs in a few isolated populations on the south coast of Western Australia.
Grows well here in #Melbs and theyโre displaying in abundance in gardens throughout our grand city atm, during mid-winter!
The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.
Many Iโve noticed present in various colours; some rustic brown, others a deep red too. Just beautiful.
The detail of the rough, woody florettes are astounding.

#CamelliaOleifera, which originated in China, is notable as an important source of edible oil (known as tea oil or camellia oil) obtained from its seeds.
It is commonly known as the oil-seed camellia or tea oil camellia.
I spotted this handsome tree driving through suburban #Oakleigh, in #Melbourneโs inner east recently.
It is adorned with a multitude of stunning flowers, as can be observed on pic 4.

#roses for your viewing pleasureโฆ theyโre still displaying proudly in #Murrumbeena #Australia.
Still fresh and healthy, even in the cooler period of mid #winter, here in #Melbs!

My ID app tells me this gorgeous tree is a #JapaneseApricot.
The flower is a beloved subject in the traditional painting and poetry of countries including China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japanโฆ and is usually called โplum blossomโ.
The fruit of the tree is used in juices, as a flavouring for alcohol, as a pickle, and in sauces. It is also used in traditional medicine.
Despite its practical uses, this tree is undeniably visually divine!

Not kidding, these things will fuck you up. On the upside, the seeds are not just edible but delicious #gardeningAU
A small walk around the back gardens. Some tilandsias known as Spanish Moss, common in the SE coastal USA. Super spiny bromeliad flowers. A bunya (araucaria bidwilli) tree grown from seed in a pot for about 7-8 years is stretching out after being set free in a bed. Those pointy leaves are razor sharp. Bunyas can grow to 45m or more. They produce soccer ball sized seed pods that can severely injure or kill people when rhe tree drops them. Future occupants of this place will hate us and unceremoniously remove it.#gardeningAU
Meet the gorgeous SalviaInvolucrata!
Also referred to as the roseleaf sage.
It is native to the Mexican states of Puebla, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz, growing in shady places such as the edge of forests.
It does pretty well here too, in #melbourne #Australia.
Its flowerโs shape is so unique. And the colour is vibrant and oh so visually pleasing to the eye!

Forgive me if this is incorrectโฆ my id app and Google both suggest this could be a #Bergenia of some variety.
Anyhow, itโs just beautiful with pink petals and lush green leaves.
Made my morning.

Meet #SalviLeucantha, the Mexican bush #sage!!
Is the vibrant purple bract flowering masses just beautiful?
It is a herbaceous (non-woody stemmed) plant that is native to subtropical and tropical conifer forests in central and eastern Mexico.
The flowers are usually white, emerging from coloured bracts. It is often grown in warmer locales for its prominent arching velvety blue or purple flowering displays.
Even though weโve just hit winter here in Oz, this is blooming all the same. And is a welcomed burst of colour on a cool but sunny day (so far!!), today!
