Red spider mites are truly evil. You can't see them with the naked eye. You can only detect them by the damage they do by piercing the underside of the leaves hundreds or thousands of times which causes leaves to collapse in short order, 24 hours or so. This is super bad when they attack seedlings, which may only have a couple of leaves. I had some now-banned miticide left over since 2002 which stopped the mite attack immediately but we will lose 2-3 plants. #gardeningAu

From the Garden rounds today.....

Over the last summer our lemon tree developed such a bad lean we had to shove a table against it to support it. The previous owners had been pruning it away from the fence but had not been pruning the branches leaning over the garden so it had become quite unbalanced.

Over the last 6 months we have been giving it a substantial prune. This morning we took the last 2 big branches off. The tree now no longer needs the table for support.

And we can now find a new home for the table which is too big for our inner #Melbourne backyard.

From the Garden rounds today...

It has been 2 months since I did a garden rounds post. Cold weather does me in and I don't spend as much time gardening. Consequently it gets overgrown and the first few weeks are clearing and weeding and pruning.

The weather has been so warm lately, I am beginning my planting and clearing about a month or so earlier than usual. Today I gingerly raked up the heaps of leaves on the front garden paths. Just in piles. I haven't lifted them into the barrow yet #SoreBack

๐ŸŒฟ I picked the first broad beans today - quite a handful, so they will make a nice addition to dinner, with a few of the tip leaves as well.

๐ŸŒท Nasturtiums are everywhere too, with their bright gold and red flowers! They have climbed into the cumquat tree and are all over the paved area around the garden shed. Also encroaching paths in other areas.

๐Ÿ There are a few bees about, but I will check earlier in the day next time.

๐ŸŒณ I am soaking the roots of the heritage fruit trees delivered this week, for 24 or so hours, and have planned where to put them. The weather is so warm and the plants are shooting, so I will put them straight into their spots. Fingers crossed my back will be healed enough to dig some holes.

What I am really happy with is that people have completely stopped dumping rubbish here. It shows what a difference it makes when people can see a place is cared for and it looks pretty.

However, you will notice a dumped shopping trolley next to the garden in one of the photos. That is still an issue. I caught one of our neighbours dumping a shopping trolley in front of our place about a month ago. I ran up the street with the trolley shouting "you've forgotten your trolley". I knew and he knew he hadn't 'forgotten' it but it helped him save face as I gave it back to him.

Itโ€™s botanical name is #DietesGrandiflora and is a perennial plant of the family Iridaceae with long, rigid, sword-like green leaves.

This species is common in horticulture in its native South Africa, where it is often used in public gardens and along roadsides.

Grows well here and itโ€™s gorgeous flowers are just breathtaking!

More busy #bees collecting nectar on these beautiful #Camellia and #scarletbottlebrush in #Melbourne #Australia.

Bees are so industrious and gentle creatures.

#bee facts;

There are over 1500 different species of native #Australian bees

Some bees are as tiny as 2mm with the largest being around 24mm.

It is thought that a honeybee produces just one half of a teaspoon of honey throughout its entire working life.

In just a single day a queen bee can lay 3000 eggs.

There are on average around 55,000 worker bees in a bee colony.

A honey beeโ€™s wings flap 11,400 times a minute, which creates the bee buzz - as in, how is this even remotely possible!!! ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ˜ฎ

A queen bee lives for up to two years.

A worker bee lives around 45 days during summer, and less in winter.

All worker bees are females, the only male bees are the drones.

Wow. Look at this beauty!!

It is a GarryaElliptica, aka the coast silk-tassel, silk tassel bush or wavyleaf silktassel.

It is a part of the family Garryaceae, native to the coastal ranges of California and southern Oregon.

It is an erect, bushy, evergreen shrub reaching a height of 2โ€“5 m (7โ€“16 ft).

This one is large and the masses of draping flowers are just beautiful, donโ€™t you think?

Caught a #bee in busy search for nectar on these two lovely #Camellia in #glenIris #Australia recently.

The blooms on these mid-sized trees are bountiful and healthy as anything.

The red petals (pic 1) are spectacular, so too the filaments and anthers of both coloured flowers.

Truly beautiful!

#DimorphothecaPluvialis, common names white African daisy, Cape rain-daisy, Cape daisy or rain daisy, is a plant species native to South Africa and Namibia.

The camera depicted these beauties perfectly; they were just as vibrant and visually dynamic in appearance irl, as youโ€™re seeing here.

The colours of the petals; amazing whites, violets and purple colours bleeding into each other and dark disk flowers (florets; those that make up the centre - pic 3), contrasted with a small ring of orange are a feast for the visual senses!

These #Camellia are a little smaller than the many larger flowering heads that are blooming at the moment throughout #melbourne.

But are no less impressive.

Vibrant colours and green foliage are most likely, in part, attributed to the rains of late and the glimpses of winter sunshine throughout the past fortnight.

Surprisingly, weโ€™re seeing Agapanthus (these I believe are #AgapanthusAfricanus) blooming in Melbs, here and there.

Theyโ€™re normally out and about in abundance throughout mid Spring to early Summer, but these few captured yesterday in #brightonEast #Australia, appeared to be new blooms.

Strange timing, however gorgeous all the same.

#daffodil in winter here in #melbourne are most definitely cheering up the landscape!

Itโ€™s botanic name is #NarcissusTazetta and many varieties and colours are popping up in many suburbs here atm.

Mostly observed are yellow, but these cream/yellow variety are growing with vigour in #ormond #Australia on a roadside verge.

They spout and grow from a bulb and hang about for anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on conditions, location, soil etc I read with interest.

Interesting facts;

There are at least 25 different daffodil species and up to 13,000 hybrids.

They're the official 10th wedding anniversary flower.

Daffodils contain sap that's often poisonous to other plants.

#BanksiaEricifolia, the heath-leaved banksia, or lantern banksia, is a woody shrub native to Australia.

It grows in two separate regions of Central and Northern New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range.

Well known for its orange or red inflorescences, which contrast with its green fine-leaved heath-like foliage, it is a medium to large shrub that can reach 6 m (20 ft) high and wide, though is usually half that size, like this one.

It normally โ€˜flowersโ€™ in autumn but this is stretching on (does so in cooler areas) into mid winter, here in Melbs.

The grey-coloured bark of this tree is smooth and fairly thin. The dark green leaves are small and narrow, 9โ€“20ย mm (1โ„4โ€“3โ„4ย in) long and up to 1ย mm wide, generally with two small teeth at the tips.

The inflorescences are flower spikes 7โ€“22ย cm (2.8โ€“8.7ย in) high and 5ย cm (2.0ย in) broad or so. The main body is kinda tubular. The spikes are say 20 - 30cm (2/4 - 1) long, hundreds of them. Deep orange in colour.

More bush / forrest pics from #Fernshaw, #YarraRangersNationalPark in #victoria #Australia.

The #Gumtreeโ€™s and #Ferns here, are epicโ€ฆ densely populated and happy and healthy.

The tall gums provide the perfect shade canopy for the ground dwelling ferns, which thrive all year round.

This day (pictured) ranged from 3 - 9 degrees Celsius (37 - 48 F), depending on the altitude.

Surprisingly, even during mid-winter, small bright green fern fronds (called โ€˜fiddleheadsโ€™) were in the early process of unrolling on a number of these plants.

I think this is a #manuka. Aka LeptospermumScoparium, (Mฤori pronunciation: maหnส‰ka), New Zealand teatree, broom tea-tree, or just tea tree.

It is native to New Zealand and south-east Australia.

Its nectar produces Mฤnuka honey.

Love itโ€™s tiny flowers - this series of bushes measured around 4 x 2 metres and was waist height (around a metre).

Pic taken just on sunset.

#BanksiaPraemorsa, commonly known as the cut-leaf banksia, is a species of shrub or tree; itโ€™s a #Banksia.

It occurs in a few isolated populations on the south coast of Western Australia.

Grows well here in #Melbs and theyโ€™re displaying in abundance in gardens throughout our grand city atm, during mid-winter!

The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.

Many Iโ€™ve noticed present in various colours; some rustic brown, others a deep red too. Just beautiful.

The detail of the rough, woody florettes are astounding.

Banksia praemorsa grows as a shrub to 4ย m (13 foot) with a relatively thick sturdy trunk that branches quite close to the ground.

The bark is rough and flaky. Flowering occurs from now, through to November. The flower spikes arise from the ends of small lateral branches up to 27ย cm (11ย in) high, they are composed of hundreds of individual โ€˜flowersโ€™ growing out of a vertical woody spike.

The woody spiked head is a greeny -yellow colour, on this one anyways.

#CamelliaOleifera, which originated in China, is notable as an important source of edible oil (known as tea oil or camellia oil) obtained from its seeds.

It is commonly known as the oil-seed camellia or tea oil camellia.

I spotted this handsome tree driving through suburban #Oakleigh, in #Melbourneโ€™s inner east recently.

It is adorned with a multitude of stunning flowers, as can be observed on pic 4.

My ID app tells me this gorgeous tree is a #JapaneseApricot.

The flower is a beloved subject in the traditional painting and poetry of countries including China, Korea, Vietnam, and Japanโ€ฆ and is usually called โ€˜plum blossomโ€™.

The fruit of the tree is used in juices, as a flavouring for alcohol, as a pickle, and in sauces. It is also used in traditional medicine.

A small walk around the back gardens. Some tilandsias known as Spanish Moss, common in the SE coastal USA. Super spiny bromeliad flowers. A bunya (araucaria bidwilli) tree grown from seed in a pot for about 7-8 years is stretching out after being set free in a bed. Those pointy leaves are razor sharp. Bunyas can grow to 45m or more. They produce soccer ball sized seed pods that can severely injure or kill people when rhe tree drops them. Future occupants of this place will hate us and unceremoniously remove it.#gardeningAU

This plant is around 5ย ft (1.5ย m) tall and its flowers and bracts are a reddish, beetroot color. Itโ€™s flowers are thin tubular structures, kind of a shallow bulbous shape; with white tips at each end (closest to camera) or tip, of each flower. Meet #SalviLeucantha, the Mexican bush #sage!!

Is the vibrant purple bract flowering masses just beautiful?

It is a herbaceous (non-woody stemmed) plant that is native to subtropical and tropical conifer forests in central and eastern Mexico.

The flowers are usually white, emerging from coloured bracts. It is often grown in warmer locales for its prominent arching velvety blue or purple flowering displays.

Even though weโ€™ve just hit winter here in Oz, this is blooming all the same. And is a welcomed burst of colour on a cool but sunny day (so far!!), today!
