Autumn is barely here but the umbrella leaf (Diphylleia cymosa) is already crisping up. It’s a gorgeous plant, related to May apples and native to Appalachia. Just look at those red peduncles blaze in the autumn light. This is its first year in this spot, and it’s suffered from either too little water, too much sun, or both. I’ll upgrade its drip line, but if it does this next year I’ll need to find a new spot for it.

I know summer is over when these begonias start blooming. We think of them as annuals—bedding plants or hanging pots— but from USDA zone 7 and up there are a few Begonias that are perennial. This is an 8 year old clump of Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana ‘Alba’ (aka big white begonia). Native to Southern China and Japan. Can be picky about conditions: rich, consistently moist soil, some morning sun will do them well.

The leaves are large and ovoid and crinkly, with prominent red radial veins converging on a red dot near the petiole. Small white flowers shaped like cowrie shells are clustered above them on juicy stems with red nodes.
Closeup of the flowers of the plant in previous image. The flowers have delicate white petals that resemble a shell when part open, and when fully open reveal a yellow Pom-Pom shaped center. The flower stems are bright pink. These are dripping with moisture from a recent shower so the petals are translucent and water droplets are clinging to them.

I feel really guilty about this, but one of the really big things that I did wrong this spring/summer was to not harvest my collard greens all at once, parboil, & freeze them. Instead, I ate some, gave some away, & then left the leaves on the plants thinking I would snip a few to eat as I went. Well, time went by, bugs took over, & I lost the rest of this beautiful crop! 😫😭😤😢😠 I'm so mad at myself, but I've learned my lesson. #FoodSecurity #GardeningMastodon #Mistakes #GrowYourOwn #Food

Here’s what’s blooming now in my garden: Rucola selvatica, perennial arugula. The arugula you buy at the grocery store is an annual, Eruca versicaria, which grows fast and is harvested young. This plant develops a semi-woody stem. It tastes very similar to but stronger than the grocery store kind; only the early leaves are tasty in my opinion—later growth has a wasabi-like bite that is a bit much for most palates.

@bespacific @rmordecai The info in this article squares with what I’ve learned in #MasterGardener training about insecticides. They’re indiscriminate —they kill off beneficial insects that may be predators of some pest species— leaving you possibly worse off than before. Insect problems can often be managed through other means, and the vast majority of crawly things in your garden are harmless to you and your plants.

A large zucchini, in fact it is massive leading its young from a vege garden. They're all wearing googly eyes as befits their marauding nature. Who knows what havoc they'll bring on the countryside surrounding this tiny Yorkshire village!

One of the old standbys in this part of the continent, Crocosmia. I’m not sure the variety—this clump came with the house and it’s at least 20 years old. We’re in partial shade so they flop a lot, but they still bloom and the hummingbirds still visit.

Medium shot of some very tall flowers in a garden bed. The foliage is strap-like and very pointed, and the inflorescences held on king bare stems are complex arrangements of individual tubular flowers with long protruding stamens, held in opposite pairs down the end of the stem, each pair being progressively smaller the closer it is to the tip of the stem.
Closer view of one of the flowers. Each is bright scarlet when open; the unopened buds are orangish yellow with scarlet tips.

One of my client's shaded flower beds, installed earlier this season, is filling out nicely. Coleus, begonias, impatiens, and caladiums - these will all last through the end of October here in Georgia.

Long view of this large shaded flowerbed. Toward the lower right, the large Kong Coleus is flaunting its chartreuse and ruby foliage, flanked on each side by coral-blooming begonias. In front of the border are dark red Sunpatiens, and behind those are white impatiens. There is a dry creekbed right behind the flowerbed.
A view of the coral-blooming begonias at the back of the border, and in front of those are the white impatiens with the red Sunpatiens at the front of the border. A few Caladiums and Coleus are tucked amongst the flowers.
A full view of this long flowerbed, planted adjacent to a dry creekbed in the shade. Coleus and coral begonias are at the back of the border, white impatiens and Caladiums run through the mid-section, and dark red Sunpatiens are at the front of the border near the grassline. Behind the flowerbed, there is a stone walkway, and that area of the garden is filled with hostas and ferns.

Okay since I’m posting, here’s a few more shots of the garden and artwork. I participated in an open garden tour as part of the Northwest Perennial Association last month. The larger ceramic pieces here are almost all sculpted by me; the tiny ones on the shelves are all painted & glazed by my kiddo at the DIY ceramics shop.

View of an outdoor courtyard formed by two house walls. An outdoor staircase runs along one. Beneath it is a set of shelves with. Wes I a on them. The courtyard is planted with exotic plants and has a stone pedestal fountain in its center. In the foreground is a large ceramic pot with a coral-like sculpture growing out of its center. The walls, shelves, and bench are all painted a vivid blue.
Closeup of a ceramic planter shaped like a dinosaur, an Ankylosaurus to be exact, with bulging cartoon eyes. It is planted with sempervivums. Behind is the courtyard from the previous image.
Another view of the courtyard of the first two images, this one showing some other planters that are highly sculpted with relief patterns and planted with pelargoniums. Other ceramic vessels look like seashells and hold succulents.
Another view of the sun hitting the courtyard and illuminating the shelves. A 2 foot high ceramic figure of a mermaid with a cat’s head is sitting on the bench.

It’s #PortfolioDay so here’s what I have been working on. I’ve been a sculptor for decades and I’ve worked in everything from bronze to neon tubes to taxidermy. Now I’m mostly doing wood and ceramics for my garden. The wooden columns were my covid project (one each done in 2020, 2021, and 2022). The other pieces are high fire ceramic.

It's lily season! Asiatic lily ‘Pink Giant’ has an extraordinary shell-pink bloom. These are growing in containers with caladiums and begonias. 🤩 It’s like having seashells blooming on my deck.

A Juniper Hairstreak butterfly lands on my finger while I #garden. Later, while it is on the ground, I try to capture the unusual luminescence of its feathers in different views.

Caterpillars of this species feed on Red Cedar. Several years ago, I moved some Cedar saplings from the gardens, where they were not wanted to a more naturalized area with trees.

This butterfly is my harvest.

A Juniper Hairstreak butterfly on the ground which is dirt. From this angle, with wings upright, there are light green luminescent spots near the base and left side. As the spots become more sparse near the top, the brown foundation is more visible and brighter as an irregular stripe. Adjacent to the brown stripe and above it is a bright white stripe. At the top of the wings beyond the white is a brown background feather with some green spots.

A blossom on our tulip tree. It's light yellow. We moved here four years ago, but this tree hasn't blossomed this beautifully until this year. I suspect the wet winter helped.
Palmer's penstemon, in light pink, and tall stalks. It's more than 3 feet tall. It's from our local farm, and I bought a small seedling two years ago. First time it bloomed!

It’s finally raining again here, and the delphiniums are drunk with joy.

“But it rains all the time in the #PNW

No. It used to. Before climate change, May and June were awash in light rain. This year, this is first rain we’ve seen in over a month.

The rain we get now postpones the wildfires and may save some acres from burning in July.

And now that’s what I think about when it rains.

Brilliant blue-purple flowers on slender wand-like stems sway sideways under the weight of raindrops. Behind, rocks and tall grass-like plants glisten with rain.

I was very happy with myself setting up a rain barrel timer system to irrigation hoses running through my pollinator garden. But today I checked and only a small trickle of water goes through the timer when it says it is running. No idea why it isn't letting more through but I'll be sad if I don't get this working and I have to go back to manually watering every day.
