My bestie (from over the MO border) traded me a flat of mixed #HotPeppers, since I fell prey to #JalapenoGate & wasn't able to grow any of my own, for some green beans, seed garlic, and black-eyed peas. So, I decided to make fermented hot sauce with the majority of them. 🌶🌶🌶🌶 #Spicy #GardeningMastodon #GrowYourOwn #Food

Can you find the Tiger Swallowtail, the Gulf Fritillary and the Monarch? The intense orange/scarlet flowers they are on is Mexican Sunflower, a #NativePlant in the Americas. #Pollinators love it!

植物も届いた!上手に冬越しできれば多年草として楽しめるアフリカンブルーバジル。紫がかったダークグリーンも美しく、とても香りがいいのよね。何度も冬越しに失敗してはだめにしているワタクシ、今回はうまくいくかな
my favorite plant "African Blue Basil" has also arrived ! it smelles really good and purplish dark green colour is so beautiful.

チューリップの球根が届いた!
have received the first tulip bulbs, "black hero" and "flaming flag" !

repotted rose "The Nun" at last !

Turns out the enlarged calyx on our "Chocolate Ghost" plant does turn red, just like a 7 Pot Bubblegun... Is anyone familiar with Chocolate Ghosts and whether they have a bleeding calyx?

Autumn is barely here but the umbrella leaf (Diphylleia cymosa) is already crisping up. It’s a gorgeous plant, related to May apples and native to Appalachia. Just look at those red peduncles blaze in the autumn light. This is its first year in this spot, and it’s suffered from either too little water, too much sun, or both. I’ll upgrade its drip line, but if it does this next year I’ll need to find a new spot for it.

I know summer is over when these begonias start blooming. We think of them as annuals—bedding plants or hanging pots— but from USDA zone 7 and up there are a few Begonias that are perennial. This is an 8 year old clump of Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana ‘Alba’ (aka big white begonia). Native to Southern China and Japan. Can be picky about conditions: rich, consistently moist soil, some morning sun will do them well.

The Nun。3つ目も咲いた!
The Nun, the third flower has also bloomed !

I feel really guilty about this, but one of the really big things that I did wrong this spring/summer was to not harvest my collard greens all at once, parboil, & freeze them. Instead, I ate some, gave some away, & then left the leaves on the plants thinking I would snip a few to eat as I went. Well, time went by, bugs took over, & I lost the rest of this beautiful crop! 😫😭😤😢😠 I'm so mad at myself, but I've learned my lesson. #FoodSecurity #GardeningMastodon #Mistakes #GrowYourOwn #Food

Here’s what’s blooming now in my garden: Rucola selvatica, perennial arugula. The arugula you buy at the grocery store is an annual, Eruca versicaria, which grows fast and is harvested young. This plant develops a semi-woody stem. It tastes very similar to but stronger than the grocery store kind; only the early leaves are tasty in my opinion—later growth has a wasabi-like bite that is a bit much for most palates.

@bespacific @rmordecai The info in this article squares with what I’ve learned in #MasterGardener training about insecticides. They’re indiscriminate —they kill off beneficial insects that may be predators of some pest species— leaving you possibly worse off than before. Insect problems can often be managed through other means, and the vast majority of crawly things in your garden are harmless to you and your plants.

More late-blooming plants in the garden. This is Ligularaia dentata. The first two photos are of cultivar ‘Desdemona’ and the third photo is ‘Britt Marie Crawford’. Big, bold foliage emerges very dark bronze and greens somewhat over the season, then these brilliant orangey yellow blooms appear in late summer that seem so at odds with the broody demeanor of the leaves. Likes moist to wet soil, part shade. USDA zones 4-9.

August is kind of a wind-down time in my garden. One thing that’s blooming now is Francoa ramosa, one of my favorites. Chilean bridal wreath is a common name (which it shares with its more petite sister species, Francoa sonchifolia). Partially evergreen in part to light shade, USDA zone 7, easy to grow but hard to find. Good pollinator plants can be a rarity in the shade garden, but this is one of them.

I had an area that needed something tall that would attract attention, and also mix with other reds in flower during the summer. The Black Diamond Crape Myrtle was the needed statement in the landscape. Nearly black foliage and bright red flowers preferred by my Beloved. You can even choose other flower colors that work for you. These are still filling in and are not in full flower, but really catch the eye.

No. It used to. Before climate change, May and June were awash in light rain. This year, this is first rain we’ve seen in over a month.

I was very happy with myself setting up a rain barrel timer system to irrigation hoses running through my pollinator garden. But today I checked and only a small trickle of water goes through the timer when it says it is running. No idea why it isn't letting more through but I'll be sad if I don't get this working and I have to go back to manually watering every day.
