50 years ago #BillieJeanKing struck a blow that transformed #Tennis & #sport more generally - her playing & campaigning on #genderequality started the shift in #gender relations in tennis into the Open Era, and is still rippling today (not least in the recent surge in #womensfootball) - she was (and is) a revolutionary.
The yearly gender-equal report is out. And Iceland is topping the list as so many times before.
Checked the background report for the article and learned Denmark is only holding the 23rd place of the ranking — lacking behind countries like Namibia, Lithuania and Costa Rica. It feels a bit embarrassing I must say.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you happen to be a cis male who feels threatened, insecure, or emasculated because your female partner makes more money than you, then you really need to engage in some serious self-reflection.
Yes, there are historical, socio-economic reasons in the USA that partly account for the difference, but fundamentally, this is a "you" issue.

I don't know how much is ignorance and how much is deliberate.
I think the disconnect comes from a place of self-centeredness, especially from cis men... It's such a revolutionary concept to try to see the world from the viewpoint of someone without their same #privilege that they HAVE to twist the argument around to something that they, themselves can benefit from as well. And since men ALREADY get to go topless anywhere in public and online that they like without getting #banned or arrested for "sexually explicit nudity" then it's only freeing their lower parts that also interests them... Because that's currently a privilege NONE of us enjoy (except of course for the handful of places that allow nonsexual nudity, which tend to be very ableist and economically privileged to even get to.
They just can't see how the fight for #toplessEquality is about giving the same rights to all #gender s, not just men... Simply the #misogynist #sexist (and indeed #transphobic) #social societal standard that says "female-looking nipples are 'sexually explicit nudity' while 'male-looking nipples' are not." does that make sense?
Inb4 "not all #nudists " and/or #NotAllMen - - search the web the "not all..." fallacy if you want to know why that's a bs deflection from the argument. I don't have time to keep belaboring that point.

We could also enter in the discussion about 'womanhood' and the absolute bullshit that is defining womanhood just in relation of the capacity of being pregnant. FFS, this is how patriarchy defines women, as pure body for reproduction purposes. This is already a long rant and convincing women that their womanhood can exist with or without motherhood (and the biological capacity to bear children) is an exhausting neverending discussion.
So, what about the cis lesbian ex politician woman rant on the front page of one of the major liberal centre-right Italian newspaper?
Well, from a legal point is not only incorrect, but also at odds with any idea of inclusive society❌
So, it is important, in the moment we accept transgenders, to grant them full rights, as they're first and foremost people and citizens.
Abortion law is always questioned by patriarchy, and the majority of discussion surrounding it are about abolishing it. For once, instead, the discussion is about making our society fairer and more inclusive. To me, these are the foundations for a true fair, inclusive and diverse society.
Now, if the abortion law - the LAW, the NORM, the ones that regulate our everyday social practices - states that abortion is granted only to *WOMEN* (love the double '*' here?), then the mismatch between the biology of these people seeking abortion and their documents can create a loophole in the law, meaning they can be denied the right to abortion and posing the base for a lot of discriminatory practices.
'Transition' or 'non-binary' does not mean then a change in their body biology, but that they present in society with the gender they feel conform to.
Their biology remaining the same means that, if they're born female (yes, let's use the biological terminology), they can still get pregnant.
There is no plan to erase women from the LGTBQIA+ community. Instead, there is the legal possibility for people who don't identify with their assigned gender, and to legally (sometimes also biologically, but not always) request to change their IDs with the gender identity the feel conform to. That means they change their name and their documents will present them with the gender they identify with.
Long story short, the Italian abortion law being rewritten to include transgender men and non-binary people is cast by this prominent woman as (conspiracyland strikes again) a measure to erase women. Which is something so stupid that it could have been said by JK Rowling.
Now, there are many things to unpack here, but let's stick to the basis.
Because TERFs are feminists, but inclusion is not for everyone, especially the when is written with a lot of <*>, because <*> is a bad type that wants to CANCEL WOMEN.
What happened that triggered such a response that is cluttering my Twitter feed and is now creeping also on (already horrible) Facebook feed?
So, "gender critical" TERFs have landed on Italian newspaper (just like, 5 or 6 years behind their British counterparts), with prominent cis lesbian ex politician leading the fight - hold on - AGAINST LAWS FOR EVERYONE. Well, the Italian title is 'Contro una legge per tutt*', which was so focused on the 'tutt*', that completely forgot the horrendous meaning. The article headline is really 'Against a law for everyone'.
Little I knew, that <*> is now becoming an evil symbol in Italy.
Because, if you still haven't had the pleasure to know, TERFs made it to Italy, and after two days of their Italian shouting nonsense on Twitter, I really need to have a rant about it, here on the WOKEST of all social media microblogging platforms which is also my favourite one. For those who wonder, I'm a simple cis straight woman. But I'm also a f*ing feminist.
I don't like the <*>, grammatically speaking, but I understand that in the absence of a proper alternative, all non-binary, trans, asexual and gender fluid people need a way to express themselves without having to send two or three toots at a time because they need to correctly type 'ragazzi e ragazze' (boys and girl). And Italian isn't even a succinct languange, believe me. So well, <*> for the winners.
None of the two solutions are grammatically accepted, but in the absence of a consensus from linguists and in the era of 140 characters messages, people kept using them, with the <*> being the most popular choice because...where the f*k is <ə> on the keyboard?

This rule applies independently of the actual number. For example, if you have 1 'ragazzo' (1 boy) and 10 'ragazze' (10 girls), you will still refer to the group as 'ragazzi', the masculine plural.
To overcome this and being more inclusive (and save characters), people on the web have resorted to various strategies, the most common being using the symbol <*> (like 'ragazz*') or, for the most sophisticated, the shwa <ə>.

First, some reference context: Italian is a gender-based language which linguistically contains only two gender, male and female, and every word, whether referred to a person, an animal, or an object, is classified in this binary system male/female noun.
As a linguistical practice, when you a have a mix of male and female elements like 'ragazzi' (boys) and 'ragazze' (girls), you refer to the group by using the masculine plural.

He cites the ubiquitous portraits of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, often accompanied by the slogan “There’s no life without a leader.”

an addendum to this idea, which I agree with (hence the boost). I understand that a lot of masto users want to keep their posts from being easily searchable outside of their pre-approved pool--and that's great, more power to them. certainly I have posts sometimes I don't want any random person seeing and turning into a "reply guy" on.
but on th he other hand, some of us WANT our posts to show up for others, namely #contentCreators like me. I don't put 20+ hours into filming a video essay extolling the values of #feminism, #lgbtq #genderEquality, etc for just a small handful of existing supporters to watch. and people who are interested in finding more material on a certain subject (outside of programming and infosec 😜) are going to quickly give up on mastodon if every time they search for something like, say, #vidcon, they get no results.
if the goal is really to encourage others to leave "siloed" mainstream platforms, there has to be content here to fill the void that the corrupt platforms currently fill (at the expense of personal data and arbitrary #censorship). it's like saying "don't go to McDonald's, come to this amazing mom. and pop restaurant instead!" but there is no visible menu and you have to know someone who knows someone that knows what the restaurant offers to even order food in the first place.
BTW putting hashtags in front of things like I did in this post makes me want to vomit, because it feels like I'm trying to be a sell out, but I have to do it if I want to open up the conversation for people who don't already follow @atomicpoet or people who boost him?)
When I was in Wellington, New Zealand, I was entranced by their unusual crosswalk icons. I asked my new friends there about them. I was told a story about a drag performer and activist by the name of Carmen Rupe. She was a trans woman who was also Māori (native people of NZ).
Her story is pretty cool. And it’s awesome that NZ honored her this way.

Meme I quickly made about responses to the ongoing discussion about #searchability on the #fediverse. As a #contentCreator and #activist for #toplessEquality--which gets me banned repeatedly on all mainstream platforms even when I DO censor out my heinous female nipples (see https://www.toplesstopics.org/banned for receipts!), a primary motivator for me to use platforms like #mastodon is to be able to spread the word about #GenderEquality anti- #censorship among more potential supporters. But the lack of #searchability on Masto makes this very hard. I'm dependent on existing followers to boost my posts so others following -them- can see it, etc, but for whatever reason very few of my existing followers do. I also can't really find posts by other people outside of my instance and the people I'm following--like I've never seen another post about #vidcon besides my own, so I have no idea if anyone else on the fediverse is even messaging about it.
#Consent is of course a cornerstone of the fediverse experience, including someone consenting to whether or not they want a certain kind of content to pop up in their feeds. And having #contentWarnings and #altText encouraged if not required by most instances makes this place leagues more of a safe space for marginalized and/or traumatized people in a way that they cannot experience on mainstream platforms. But this can be very time-consuming and cumbersome, both remembering to add CWs and Alt Text to everything, coming up with custom text every time, and also on the end of it--when you follow enough people (or check out the public timelines) pressing "show content" over and over and over on each post gets REALLY annoying. But again, I'd rather have that tedium then have to subject myself to content that I find really triggering (for me, it's pretty much anything to do with kids and #gunViolence...I live in America where my kids are at risk of getting shot every day they go to school, and while I want to stay informed, I also need some mental prep before I look/read too much about it). And I know for others who have even more triggers, especially around things that the majority of people wouldn't find triggering (like pictures of food), then again, the fediverse is leagues better than the "normal" sites.
But back to searchability, as a veteran Twitter user (I cold-turkey quit in November, don't worry) I am well versed in how dealing with reactionary bullies who can take a tweet out of context and share it with their thousands if not millions of followers to dunk on you all at once. It can also open you up to a lot of haters in general, who will search out content like yours to leave hateful comments (like the comment sections of my Tiktok/Instagram/Youtube posts any time I mention #gunControl ...) BUT, even for content that I WANT people to find--primarily my topless equality content--again, it only shows up if followers of mine boost it to their own followers, and that's a very small niche. The only way we can ever hope to normalize gender-equal topless rights is if there are enough people putting pressure on social media sites and lawmakers to change their policies, and that requires a groundswell of support that's just not possible in isolated communities like Masto currently is. So I would LOVE some more methods for searchability, for people outside of my instance to find my content--and for me to find theirs.
I'm not a programmer, so I don't know how difficult this would be in reality. But the solution seems to me to be creating a searchable index, but making it opt-in only--accoounts like mine can opt-in to be found by people searching for #topless (who thereby might be influenced to think about topless equality, not just searching for porn), while others who want to keep their content protected (maybe searchable among their followers who they already trust, but not to the world wide web) can stay in the default opt-out status until they choose otherwise.
I've seen a few mentions of projects in the works LIKE this, but haven't seen one that's all the way working yet. If there's one that's mostly in working order, please recommend it! I'd love to give it a try.
