"The team conducted brain scans of 28 people with PTSD while they listened to recorded narrations of their own memories. Some of the recorded memories were neutral, some were simply “sad,” and some were traumatic.

The brain scans found clear differences, the researchers reported in a paper published on Thursday in the journal Nature Neuroscience."

"Memory decline is not inevitable with aging, Dr. Restak argues in the book. Instead, he points to 10 “sins,” or “stumbling blocks that can lead to lost or distorted memories.” Seven were first described by the psychologist and memory specialist Daniel Lawrence Schacter — “sins of omission,” such as absent-mindedness, and “sins of commission,” such as distorted memories."

Text from article:
I study government bureaucracies. This is not normally a key political issue. Right now, it is, and everyone should be paying attention.

Donald Trump, the former president and current candidate, puts it in apocalyptic terms: “Either the deep state destroys America or we destroy the deep state.” This is not an empty threat. He has a real and plausible plan to utterly transform American government. It will undermine the quality of that government and it will threaten our democracy.

A second Trump administration would be very different from the first. Mr. Trump’s blueprint for amassing power has been developed by a constellation of conservative organizations that surround him, led by the Heritage Foundation and its Project 2025. Excellent piece in the Washington Post

“OpenAI and X: Promises of populist technology, shaped by a single man”

“Silicon Valley has for years adopted this messaging and mood that it’s all about radical transparency and openness — remember Google’s ‘Don’t be evil’ motto? — and this idea of a kinder, gentle capitalism that’s going to change the world for the better,” she [Margaret O’Mara] said.

“Then you have these moments of reckoning and remember: It’s capitalism. Some tech billionaires lost, and some other ones are winning,” she added. “These are private-sector people making money off something that serves a public function. And when they take a turn because of very personal, very individual decisions, where a handful of people are shaping the trajectory of these companies, maybe even the existence of these companies, that’s something new we all have to deal with.”

This story about a tv show netflix spent $55 million on and resulted in no episodes being made is wild. Content warning for a mention of Quibi.

“He [Rinsch] claimed to have discovered Covid-19’s secret transmission mechanism and to be able to predict lightning strikes. He gambled a large chunk of the money from Netflix on the stock market and cryptocurrencies. He spent millions of dollars on a fleet of Rolls-Royces, furniture and designer clothing.”

But it seems pretty clear to me that Rinsch needs help. LAPD psychologist disagreed, though:

“Netflix executives grew so concerned with Mr. Rinsch’s behavior that they consulted with the Los Angeles Police Department’s threat management unit, a person with knowledge of the matter said. A Police Department psychologist reviewed Mr. Rinsch’s texts and emails and concluded that he didn’t seem like a threat to himself or others.”

Because Johnson couldn’t get Republican votes to take up the government-funding resolution under normal procedures, he instead had to suspend the rules and pass it with a two-thirds majority. This meant that Democrats would have to bail him out — just as they had McCarthy.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) taunted during the floor debate: “It is the Democrats who have come to save America and to stop this dastardly shutdown.”

It was true. Two hundred nine of 211 Democrats voted for Johnson’s 60-day stopgap. But 93 Republicans voted against it — three more than the number who opposed McCarthy’s 45-day stopgap in September before they booted him from the speakership.

Will Johnson, after three weeks on the job, now face the same fate?

Unlikely, for a simple reason: House Republicans have now proved beyond all doubt that absolutely no one can govern them.

When Moody’s Investors Service lowered its outlook last week on the U.S. government’s creditworthiness, it specifically cited Washington dysfunction: “renewed debt limit brinkmanship, the first ouster of a House Speaker in U.S. history, prolonged inability of Congress to select a new House Speaker, and increased threats of another partial government shutdown due to Congress’ inability to agree on budgetary appropriations.”

Johnson ignored all that, instead putting out a statement blaming the Moody’s action on “President Biden and Democrats.” He then led the House through another week of dysfunction.

The speaker introduced a temporary extension of government funding, adopting a tiered approach with multiple expiration dates that had been proposed by the House Freedom Caucus. Members of the Freedom Caucus immediately trashed the plan. Johnson met with the caucus on Monday night to try to sway them. The group issued a statement on Tuesday morning saying Johnson’s plan “contains ... not a single meaningful win for the American people.”

Or was it late-entrant George Santos? On Thursday, the House Ethics Committee said the New York Republican had “brought severe discredit upon the House” and that it had uncovered “additional uncharged and unlawful conduct” beyond the 23 charges he already faces. Santos responded by claiming he was being “stoned by those who have flaws themselves” — and by calling for a constitutional convention. He dropped his reelection bid, as he prepares a possible move from the House to the big house.

Vast concentration camps, workplace raids, detention and summary expulsion without a hearing….call it xenophobic demagoguery or call it fascism, Trump’s plans are clearly inspired by the book that was once his bedtime reading: “Mein Kampf.”#GiftLink https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/11/us/politics/trump-2025-immigration-agenda.html?unlocked_article_code=1.9kw.Tplj.HsD-eJBkJTSa&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Of course #Hamas wants a permanent war with #Israel. And of course they drag innocent Palestinians into their murderous plans.

“I hope that the state of war with Israel will become permanent on all the borders, and that the Arab world will stand with us,” Taher El-Nounou, a Hamas media adviser, told The Times.“

I’m a Jew and I’m sickened by this. Yes, I was horrified by the Oct. 7 terrorist attack. But Palestinian civilians are NOT Hamas and this is not defense. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

#Israel dropped almost as many bombs in #Gaza in one week as the U.S. did in Afghanistan in one year — the heaviest year.

Gaza is 141 sq miles.

Afghanistan is 252,071 sq miles.

"Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the quiet part out loud: “Gaza won’t return to what it was before,” he said. “We will eliminate everything.”

But we Palestinians already knew what Gallant had in mind. Corralled in Gaza for the past 17 years, burdened with mass unemployment and poverty — even before white phosphorus filled the skies, or before we lay crushed beneath the rubble — we could not breathe."

Text from article:
I write to you in mourning. Even now, we Palestinians are not granted the luxury to grieve. Instead, we are burdened with the responsibility to talk, to communicate the extent of our suffering and the injustice wielded against us.

So, first, I must say this: We demand an immediate cease-fire. We demand a lifting of the Israeli siege of Gaza and the restoration of electricity, fuel, water and food. And we demand unimpeded humanitarian access in line with international law.

Today, the word “genocide” is being widely used. I can’t think of another word that captures the magnitude of what Israel, a nuclear-armed military power, continues to unleash on a captive population of children and refugees. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the quiet part out loud: “Gaza won’t return to what it was before,” he said. “We will eliminate everything.”

But we Palestinians already knew what Gallant had in mind. Corralled in Gaza for the past 17 years, burdened with mass unemployment and poverty — even before white phosphorus filled the skies, or before we lay crushed beneath the rubble — we could not breathe. We were held captive like prisoners who had never committed a crime or shot down when we attempted to peacefully protest our incarceration.

Our 1 million children have never traveled outside Israel’s militarized cage and know nothing but the buzz of drones in the sky tracking their every move.

The article clearly talks about how Israel was not "obligated to fire back" in the way that they did. Israel is making no effort to spare innocent civilians. The #UN has warned Israel that #CollectivePunishment is a #WarCrime

Hamas are terrorists, but a government that commits #WarCrimes against a civilian population is also "the problem".

"After the initial horror at the sheer barbarism of the Hamas onslaught on Israeli children, older adults and a dance party, what happened? The narrative quickly shifted to the brutality of the Israeli counterattack on Gazan civilians, among whom Hamas has embedded itself. The massive Israeli counterstrike overshadowed Hamas’s terrorism and instead made the organization a hero to some."

Nevertheless, it is instructive to reflect on the contrast between India’s response to the Mumbai terrorist attack and Israel’s response to the Hamas slaughter.

This morning, al-Shifa Hospital was overflowing with people. No doctor was there, only one young nurse trying to manage everyone’s needs.

When I arrived at her bedside, Wissam made a request that broke my heart. She wanted to know: Could I give her a lethal injection? She was confident that Allah would forgive her. I smiled and said, “But he will not forgive me, Wissam.”

“I am going to ask him to, on your behalf,” she said.

I cited a verse on the wisdom of the Almighty. I told her he preferred that she be alive amid all this death. She insisted that she could no longer stand the pain. She had been given no drugs. Her face was pale, and she seemed ready to give up.

"I made my way toward Eisha’s place in the Tel al-Zaatar neighborhood of the [Jabalya] camp. Heaps of rubble and half-collapsed buildings lay everywhere. By this stage, I’ve become indifferent to the explosions ripping holes in the city around me.

This morning, the bakery queues were longer than usual. In front of Shanti Bakery on Wihda Street and Family Bakery between Wihda and Nasser streets, they were more than 500 meters long. According to the head of the Bakeries’ Association, seven bakeries have been hit by Israeli missiles. Two nights ago, the one near my sister Asma’s house was destroyed, along with the lives of most of those queuing outside.

It’s not just bakeries that are being hit but also other places where people gather. Last night, they hit the souk in Nuseirat Camp, along with two of the camp’s best-known restaurants: Jenin and Aqil. I’d grabbed a sandwich from Aqil on the fifth day of the war. The people who had been queuing there yesterday are now dead.

"“I don’t trust the Israeli army,” I replied. “So why should I obey them?”

Yesterday, my friend Mohammed’s brother was killed with his #family in Nuseirat Camp, having moved south from #Gaza City as the Israelis ordered. Others who obeyed didn’t get even that far. Dozens were killed yesterday in a cluster of missile strikes on the Salah al-Din Road, the main artery heading southward."

Like the sound of a drone outside, or the persistent buzz of a mosquito indoors, danger is everywhere. No place is safe in the Gaza Strip.
