This was my Day 3 Doors image for the challenge I am partaking of.
I had fun making this #art using a free stock photo of the door and adding my #fractal #angel to it in #Gimp then giving it a smoothing effect to take off the rough edges.
Why am I telling you all this? Because I wouldn't want you to mistake this for a text generated AI image!! I am an old school #digitalartist who is hands on with my creative processes.

I am having the weirdest bug ever in #GIMP
- Open one specific xcf file.
- Square select an area.
- Click one of the buttons in the sidebar that makes the height of the selected area one pixel greater or smaller.
The whole interface crashes immediately. When you reduce the window to the task bar and bring it back, the interface spaces are all blank. The size of the selected area keeps growing as if you still press the button. Window does not respond to closing.
Only with that one file!
So I traced the #map I did for a #dnd module I am looking to work on.
Coffee was making me sleepy so I had a energy drink and kinda coming down for a high still.
Yeah it is not as nice as the original material copy... and I just realised that I missed out an entire room.
But hey it'll look better than a photo (I guess). Might add the edging and sort out the text etc. Definitely not done but a good place.
@Taunide Dann würd ich glatt mal schlauschwatzen und sagen: Nimm Dir einfach mal was billiges zur Hand und probier aus. Ich hatte mich eingangs verlesen, sorry... da du das Teil ja nur "bei Tisch" benutzen willst, musst Du Dir keine großen Gedanken machen. Für "Indoor" tendiere ich selber zu Druckbleistiften, aber das ist auch ein bisschen meiner Sturheit ("ich will...") geschuldet. Beim Druckbleistift ist es so schön, dass die Spitze eben immer so schön fein und spitz bleibt, wie sie angegeben ist, und zwar bis sie verbraucht ist. Letztendlich ist es aber doch so, dass jeder das eine oder das andere mag. Preiswert ist beides, wenn man nicht unbedingt Markenfetischist oder High-End-Glaiubenskrieger ist.
Übrigens hab ich das "echte" Schreiben auch auch erst wieder gelernt, also was wirklich lange oder mir auf irgendeine Weise wichtige Texte sind. Jahrzehnte Kalender und Adressbuch im Rechner/eigener Cloud, beruflich ähnlich lange Zeit ähnliches Verhalten... bis ich vor einiger Zeit einen alten Füller wiedergefunden hatte. 😀
Seitdem wandern Notizen, Ideen und anderes nicht mehr in den Rechner oder das Tablet und ich schreibe fast alles mit der Hand. Auch und gerade lange Texte (natürlich nicht jeden dämlichen Brief) schreibe ich fast nur noch analog. Eigentlicch schon viel länger - ne mechanische Schreibmaschine haben wr nämlich auch noch stehen. In letzter Zeit, gerade unterwegs, nehm ich aber dauernd den Füller. 😀
Natürlich heisst das nicht, dass Rechner, Netz & Co nicht auch Vorteile haben. Bildbearbeitung mit #Gimp, Bildarchiv mit #digiKam, Textkorrekturen mit #LibreOffice , Satz mit #Scribus und dazu noch ein wenig Krita, das ist für die Weitervarbeitung analoger Sachen schon prima.
Die Vorarbeit mache ich inzwischen aber am liebsten analog. Scanner ist gut eingefummelt, was aus der Schreibmaschine kommt wandert danach in den automatischen Einzug und wird von #Tesseract an Office durchgereicht. 😀
Aus "Oh, guck ma, da is der Füller ja wieder, mal sehen, ob der nich geht" ist nun irgendwie ne Leidenschaft geworden. Ich empfinde das tägliche Kitzeln als deutlich sztrewssfreier. 😀

In reality with this style you can't get buildings with holes in them, so I should look into how to fill these in with :qgis: . Any suggestion on easy ways to do this welcome 🤔

Ouput plain black/white from #qgis, but result was a bit 'sharp', both in tone and shape.
Used #gimp. Oilify + Ripple to soften and simplify shapes, Noise Hurl followed by Desaturate to soften tones
Used Ordnance Survey OpenZoomStack crown copyright and database right.

there's so many filters, tools that it could be overwhelming at the beginning but it's a must-have !^^
Do you know of a Linux solution for popular "artistic" photo enhancement filter effects? I mean those one-click filters that you might know from the Pixelfed UI. Even the simple open source gallery app on my Android phone has some of them built in.
The #beautify add-on for #Gimp fits my expectations, but I wonder whether there is something else that didn't cease development 11 years ago. I didn't try XnRetro yet.
My gut feeling is that I lack the right keywords for a search.
**UBUNTU LINUX 23.10 WITH TABLET IS B0RKED**
This is just an informational post.
The Gnome 45 release shipped with Ubuntu 23.10 can't handle tablet input. So, if you use creative tools like Inkscape, Krita, GIMP, or Blender Grease pencil with a tablet for pen input, you'll want to hold off on that upgrade.

Bit late in the day, but stoked to see that #GIMP (using 2.10.28) has a CMYK halftone effect, where each channel has its own rotation angle (to avoid moire artifacts)
I suspect I might get better results if I mess with blend modes, and decompose channels to layers, but that's an exercise for another day 🙂
The defaults seem to result in banding so for CMYK channels I use 0,15,30 and 45 degree rotations respectively.

There are so many low hanging fruits for you folks to embrace inclusivity and make a dedicated effort to clean up your act but you seem too bloody busy pissing all over the tree to mark your territory.

#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣4️⃣: Black and white
(Just about caught up!) 😅
I guess I’m either being too literal or too cheeky with this map, but here we have a two-part image showing the Black Sea (colored in black with land areas in white) and the White Sea (colored in white with land areas in black) both drawn to the same scale (i.e., #UTM zone 37N).
All geographic data (coastlines, lakes, cities) come from #NaturalEarth’s 1:10m vectors, rendered in #QGIS , and combined in #GIMP.
GIMP is currently being ported over to GTK 3, which would probably also allow it to work natively on Wayland.
The release schedule for GIMP 3.0 is set to May of next year, but it's going to be tough. So, if there's anything you can do, please do consider helping out.
Non destructive editing was the only feature missing from #GIMP in order to compete with #Photoshop. Now we'll see it in GIMP 3.0 in a couple of months. So much great news from #FOSS recently for graphics based software.

Done in #qgis and #GIMP. Used QGIS preview mode to get a feel for how it would look in monochrome. OS OpenZoomStack data.
In GIMP, used Colors > Desaturate > Color to grey. Gives a grainy shapeburst effect.
And speaking of being thankful for great FOSS tools that keep getting better, a shoutout to #gimp which I used to edit the screenshots.

Taking a picture on a clean (ish) white background with a slight shadow. Obviously white is not perfect (255/255/255).
I want to make the background white, keeping the shadow.
I can fuzzy select with tolerance and feather, but that is not right as it feathers the hard product edges too. Less feathering leaves a hard edge on the shadow.
I want to select a soft edge on a fuzzy select based on how far off the selected white it is. I think.
I thought it was time to show more of my passion for abstract art so I made this one this morning. Another attempt to make #DigitalArt that doesn't look digital using #ArtRage and #Gimp.

This post is kinda late. 😝 Anyway, I had some #JavaScript code from several years back that lets me render a faux portolan chart as an SVG image in the browser given a GeoJSON data of coastlines. So for today I tried to resurrect this idea and chose to render a map of #SaintKittsAndNevis 🇰🇳. After drawing the basic elements, I then went into #GIMP to add labels and finishing touches.
Data is of course from #OpenStreetMap (licensed under the ODbL 1.0).

I also added some code to render the bivariate color legend as a diamond.
Since the map was rendered in the browser as SVG, I exported the vector image file and opened it in #GIMP (note: I have no opinion on the petition⁵ to rename the app) to do some post-render cleaning up and add texts and labels. (I actually could have just coded the texts in JS but I was already in way too deep. 😝)

When exporting a #png you can use a high compression level to reduce the file size. The compression is lossless so it doesn't affect the image quality.
It's a great way to save some space on your computer but also on your beloved #fediverse instance (storage aint free after all) !
I made a tiny graph to summarize. It shows where you can set the compression in some #OpenSource softwares.
Between, Blender default's png compression is at 15%.

Hmmm. I think I've found a bug in how #GIMP renders #SVG text.

I wonder if there's a sensible way to convert a complex SVG to a raster which doesn't involve it? Sadly, ImageMagick is just too slow.
