Middleton et al. Scabies Management in Institutions

Abstract
Scabies is a particular problem in semi-closed institutions such as residential settings for elderly people, children and those with learning disabilities; refugee camps and other settings for displaced persons; prisons; schools; hospitals and hostels. What many of these diverse places have in common is a range of transmission drivers which enable scabies to reach very high prevalence including: high densities of potential hosts, social behaviours involving prolonged contact, bed and clothes sharing, manual handling, reduced access to laundry facilities and immunocompromise. We describe the epidemiology of institutional scabies outbreaks across settings, and based primarily on recent and longstanding evidence from adult health care, we draw out general strategic priorities for case management and outbreak control. The tools and information necessary to carry out an epidemiological assessment of an institutional scabies outbreak are provided, along with guidance on control measures. A summary checklist of the key steps to take in responding to an institutional outbreak concludes the chapter.

Thank you to @nihrresearch for funding support.

This is part of the first comprehensive book on scabies, written by experts from across the world. You can order the full 31 chapter ebook and hardback for your uni/clinical library here: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-26070-4

None of these targets are clearly on track to be met by their target year (most often 2030). Côte d'Ivoire 🇨🇮 faces an increased risk of disease outbreaks with epidemic potential. HIOH and #RKI equipped a new training and research laboratory at the University Teaching Hospital of Bouaké. It was funded through the #GlobalHealth Protection Programme #GHPP.

The minister of health and local representatives opened the laboratory together with RKI and HIOH. 🤝

👨‍🔬 The laboratory is envisaged to become a hub for teaching modern molecular #diagnostics and state of the art sequencing technology.

Project participants from Côte d'Ivoire and Germany walk across a sandy outdoor area in business clothes. Trees and a white building can be seen in the background.
The photo shows 6 people in blue lab coats standing in a laboratory room with digital equipment.

The eco-revolution that we need can't simply be to replace petro-capitalism with exploitative cobalt and lithium mining beneath a green-washed economy.

We need to rethink how we're going to produce energy production and store it safely and humanely throughout the entire energy economy, including at the very bottom of the supply chain.

Some pieces that have been on my mind follow.

Me - DA-FUK?

Please remove your self proclaimed environmentalist crap then.

If you're a #photographer & not assigned, as part of your #essential work from a corporation that needs to exploit ppl over #GlobalHealth & acting like #CovidIsOver - please remove & block me. I don't want to be connected to folks who don't think about immunocompromised folks enough to stop selfish mindsets. No one NEEDS to fly anywhere to capture amazing photos.

"We’ve become numb to the daily death toll...but we should view it as too high. Consider that in the United States, daily hospitalizations and deaths, while lower than at the worst peaks, have not yet dropped to the low levels reached during summer 2021 before the delta variant wave.

Do #SouthAfrica get to keep making their reverse engendered local version without a three figure licensing fee per dose? #GlobalHealth #AfricanScience

and does #Australia having local manufacturing mean we get some control of pricing or some share of profits? #auspol

Anecdotally, lots of reports from healthcare staff around the world, finding #vaccinehesitancy around routine #immunisation where previously there was high #vaccine confidence.

#measles is likely to be a particular problem, given it's so infectious. I wrote this just before christmas -

Happy new year and hi to the Mastodon peeps!
I see #introductions are a thing, so here I go 🤓:
I'm Maja, an #econ postdoc working on #GlobalHealth at the Brigham & Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
Just got back from my email hiatus over the holidays. Now that I'm mostly off twitter, I'm trying to my way around here. Interested in: #AccessToCare #HIV #LMIC #NCDs #Aging #DevEcon #development #Gender #Equity #ResearchEthics #ImpactEval. Excel trashing also welcome.

It has been another busy year in #globalhealth and #infectiousdisease. As WHO’s Mike Ryan told me: “2022 [was] kind of a mixed year, filled with terror and hope in equal measure.”
My colleague Laura Salm-Reifferscheidt and I spent a lot of time this month asking doctors and researchers to look back at 2022 for an end-of-year episode of our podcast @pandemia (and another episode to come on what 2023 may bring). Episode is here (in German) and a few main points to come:

Since November 23, 2022, Twitter is no longer enforcing the COVID-19 misleading information policy.

Twitter did a fair (although insufficient) job to fight #COVID19 #disinformation but in this new phase where vaccine uptake is low, and epidemiological and genomic surveillance can’t deal with current transmission levels, we’d need to keep #infodemic level less than ever.

It’s grotesque when minimizers cheer for other countries to fail at mitigating #COVID spread.

It’s also self-defeating: When other places fail, it raises the likelihood of more transmissible & deadly variants, which prolongs the pandemic & increases the danger for EVERYONE around the world.
