Early this year, Ukrainian cybersecurity researchers found Fighting Ursa leveraging a zero-day exploit in Microsoft Outlook (now known as CVE-2023-23397). According to Wyden, many app users do not realize that these instant alerts "aren't sent directly from the app provider to users’ smartphones" but instead "pass through a kind of digital post office run by the phone's operating system provider" to "ensure timely and efficient delivery of notifications."
A source familiar with Wyden's probe told Reuters that "both foreign and US government agencies have been asking Apple and Google for metadata related to push notifications to, for example, help tie anonymous users of messaging apps to specific Apple or Google accounts."
Apple has since confirmed in a statement provided to Ars that the US federal government "prohibited" the company "from sharing any information," but now that Wyden has outed the feds, Apple has updated its transparency reporting and will "detail these kinds of requests" in a separate section on push notifications in its next report.
Ever since SMS text messages came into being, governments have been accessing message content and metadata. Since many messengers now have end-to-end-encryption of the message content, they can no longer read the message content. But the metadata is still available. This is the same metadata that WhatsApp has been passing upstream to Facebook (as contained in its privacy policy).
The fact is, there is a lot of value around metadata, and more so when harvested in bulk. The only way to get around this is to disable push notifications for sensitive apps. Some open source apps installed from, for example F-Droid, will not use Google's push notifications. But any other push notification service will still see the same metadata. It will be interesting to see how this is able to be locked down.
Android's OS settings only go as far as preventing content displaying on the lock screen, but the data is still passing through the push notification system itself.
Signal messenger does have an in-app notification setting to display name and message, name only, or no name or message. So, in Signal's case, you can change this to name only (it will leak the person's name and when they messaged you), while the no name or message may be best as it will probably just inform you there is "a message".
But this type of granular in-app push notification setting probably does not yet exist in Google Messages, Apple Messages, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc.

On December 5, 1910, Chief Justice Seth Shepard of the District Court of Appeals in Washington D.C., ruled that Isabel Wall, an eight-year-old girl, was prohibited from attending the local white public school because she was 1/16th Black. The court held that any child with an “admixture of colored blood” would be classified as such; thus, Isabel would be made to attend a separate school for Black children.
He knew that Isabel Wall, like all other Black students, would be greatly disadvantaged in the quality of education she could receive at the underfunded segregated school. Justice Shepard even recognized that as a “cruel hardship,” but justified the decision by insisting it would be a “greater evil” to allow a child with even one Black great-great-grandparent to attend a white school.

Threat Actors Exploit Adobe ColdFusion CVE-2023-26360 for Initial Access to Government Servers
The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is releasing a Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) in response to confirmed exploitation of CVE-2023-26360 by unidentified threat actors at a Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agency. This vulnerability presents as an improper access control issue impacting Adobe ColdFusion versions 2018 Update 15 (and earlier) and 2021 Update 5 (and earlier). CVE-2023-26360 also affects ColdFusion 2016 and ColdFusion 11 installations; however, they are no longer supported since they reached end of life. Exploitation of this CVE can result in arbitrary code execution. Following the FCEB agency’s investigation, analysis of network logs confirmed the compromise of at least two public-facing servers within the environment between June and July 2023.

THE SANDCREEK MASSACRE
At dawn on November 29, hundreds of U.S. soldiers led by Colonel John Chivington surrounded the village. Residents responded by waving white flags and pleading for mercy; one of the chiefs even raised the American flag in an attempt to demonstrate that he, too, was American. Ignoring these symbols of surrender and peace, the white troops opened fire with carbines and cannons, slaughtering more than 200 Native American people. Most of the victims of the massacre were women, children, and the elderly and infirm. After the massacre, the troops burned the village, mutilated the bodies of the deceased, and removed body parts to keep as trophies. Some scalps of the dead became props in plays that the troops later performed to celebrate, as one soldier boasted, “almost an annihilation of the entire tribe.”

Legally, its absence was always going to be the sticking point. I’m taking this as a win b/c she used her ruling to cohesively lay out how #Trump was responsible for the #January6th #insurrection, which in turn creates #legal standing that will empower future prosecutions.
