“It’s just payroll” - I’ve heard that many times, from people who don’t understand payroll. Tough to get right, easy to go wrong, and when it goes wrong it can have serious impacts on employees and their relationship with the company. Kroger has been experiencing that for a while now, with a poor implementation of a new payroll system.

Interesting challenge. I'm in the final leg of a full-time position at a regular college. If I get it, it will be a good landing. I'll still get to keep on doing all the things I do now, and have a deeper safety net.
But, the thing that has them worried is if I'm the "typical Ph.D." or am I actually chill. The hinge is cultural, not professional ability. I had my final interview with HR about just that issue. And it sounds like they have made bad choices in the past. * My P/T job #HR is refusing to reword gender status (meaningless) to gender identity in their #EqualOps policy
* They immediately jumped to "fierce political debate"
* They dismissed concerns about changes to #EqualityAct
* A coworker #mansplained 'using the debugger' to me
* An #audiobook review misgendered me + wished I'd "done better"
* It's #VO awards time so social is just happy winners and attendees... I've never been nominated or even invited.

Not great.

#QuietQuitting? In my experience, most employees have Quiet Quit before their first day on the job.

At least, if your definition of Quiet Quitting is also someone who does the bare minimum, doesn't participate in team activities, never takes initiative....

Getting employees -- especiall low-level employees -- to actually care about the business, to feel like they're invested, is almost impossible. And the bigger your business, the harder it is.

At the end of the day, most corporate employees are after a paycheque and nothing more. :(

Last week, I received a phishing test email that was mocked up to appear to be from HR, sharing some bullshit policy change.

I couldn’t help but to reflect that fewer employees would fall for these if they weren’t accustomed to inconvenient and rage-inducing material flowing freely from HR.

Maybe someone in #HR is forcing all the #Hispanics to admit that we're really 2 or more races. We're forever the mongrels of this world, and must declare a 2-race status in every job application we submit or be forced to check the "refuse to answer" box.

This is the race question I have to deal with every day. Did someone screw up the default settings on #myworkday myworkdayjobs.com and no one in #HR thought about fixing it? #jobseeking

It's consistently been like this for many weeks now. Hispanics are being grouped differently and the only way to answer this question is to not answer it.

Are Hispanics not a race too? Do we not deserve our own little box that's not segregated all by its lonesome self?

I think there might be a threshold for when a company stops caring about their employees. I think it probably coincides with when they form a HR department.

Having an entire department with the primary purpose of treating humans like (consumable) resources is a pretty good indication that the empathy is gone.

Shopify is restructuring its staffing and compensation model.

The Ottawa-based e-commerce company says staff will now be split into two career tracks: managers and crafters.

Compensation levels will be equivalent regardless of whether someone chooses to be a manager or a crafter.

I did not mean to harm you, yet I see how I did; I am sorry. I will do better next time. I'll personally review our neurodiversity sensitivity training materials. As a hiring manager and former HR manager, YES — you should have a "formatted for humans" version of your resume and a "formatted for robots" version of your resume. Most applicant tracking systems will let you submit both (even if you attach the "nice" one along with your cover letter).

It lets us know you appreciate the human reviewing your work, but that you're also savvy enough to know the company's ATS tracks specific keywords in your textfile.

Next was an interesting discussion with Erika Deserranno on promotion, #pay, and #productivity in #SierraLeone healthcare workers on the @voxdev podcast. This is a nicely controlled experiment that shifts some workers to rewarding quantitative KPIs while holding others constant, unsurprisingly finding an improvement in those KPIs. an applicant applies for a job in your niche industry. there is no local competition. maybe ten companies in the world are in your niche.

people don’t often move between these companies. geographic reasons. usually, people that leave the company leave the industry and find some other type of employ.

what is the best reaction when a resume comes in from someone with one of those ten companies on it?

Appreciate the #jobs hashtag on #Mastodon. Gives clear view of trends in the #jobMarket, the pulse of #IT & #security. Allows to apply directly, even to #FOSS & #OpenSource positions.

Yet offers're #US centric. Even when marked #remote, the #remoteJob is usually for 🇺🇸, #Canada residents. Strange feeling, considering the share of #fediverse users in #Europe, #Asia , etc.

#HR folks, wouldn't it be good to put a disclaimer like "US-only" / "worldwide"? Use #internationalJob or #remoteWorldwide ?
