You can help #biodiversity outside your immediate #habitat. Just be aware of creatures passing through on their way to a seasonal location.

This male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak arrived from its winter location in Central or South America. There is good habitat here, but in years past they simply tease and move on to another forest. But such birds have a waystation in this garden with multiple feeders of Sunflower seeds, their favorite.

#gardening #BirdWatching #biodiversity

A Grosbeak sits on a hanger for a bird feeder, looking left. At this angle the bright red feathers on the chest are clear. There is a stark contrast between this red and the black and white of the remaining feathers.

In the discussion of #biodiversity and #habitat conservation, there are many valid causes to fight for:

Stopping the effects of #ClimateChange

Curbing development of critical habitat

Fighting for better protections towards #ThreatenedTaxa.

"Liana cutting in selectively logged forests increases both carbon sequestration and timber yields
Liberating future crop trees from lianas is a cost-effective way to increase rates of carbon sequestration, increase timber yields, and restore degraded forest."
"Infestations of trees by woody climbing plants (i.e., lianas) are common and increasing in an estimated 250 Mha of the 1 billion hectares of mixed-species tropical and temperate forest subjected to selective logging. Cutting lianas that impede the growth of future crop trees (FCTs) in these forests would sequester carbon at low cost and increase timber yields."

"One Year Ago I Built a 5 Acre Pond - Here's What Happened"

https://youtu.be/VlucyUxDALA

Bama_Bass Pond construction

Following on from last week, today’s #TipsfortheTrail is to include #habitat every now and again in your #wildlifephotography.

Often, we are encouraged to get photos of #wildlife relatively close up in front of a nice clear background. Don’t get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with this. It is a great way to #photograph different animals and is something I’m working on improving myself.

However, don’t forget the role that the habitat you are shooting in can play as well. It helps create a story and puts the animal in context. A recent example that I came across was this photo I took of a female mallard #duck.

The duck was wading through long pond grass and was largely hidden while I was there. There was no way I could get a clear shot of it, let alone a smooth background. However, I tried to use the habitat to my advantage and having got my camera eye level with the duck I was able to shoot this image through the grass.

It’s messy and there’s a lot going on but it also conveys a lot. I managed to get eye contact through the grass but it feels secretive. Including the habitat provides this context and helps tell a different story that is not always conveyed in wildlife photography.

It’s different, it’s challenging and it’s really fun. Give it a go every now and again and see what stories you can convey through including just a little bit of habitat!

11 Important Things to Know About #Clover Lawns

A clover lawn provides many benefits: less watering, less mowing, natural fertilization, and the attraction of wildlife and #pollinators. Is a clover yard right for you? Here's what else you need to know.

By Lori Lovely | Published Jun 21, 2022

"America’s #biodiverse meadows of days gone were slowly converted to French- and English-style #monoculture #lawns featuring mostly turf grass. By the late 1800s, the neatly trimmed, aesthetically pleasing grass lawn became a symbol of wealth. The invention of the lawn mower, as well as planned communities designed by Frederick Law Olmstead (the designer of Central Park) and other landscape architects, further cemented the trend in the U.S.

"While manicured #monocultural lawns may look nice, they have drawbacks, such as depriving #pollinators of food and #habitat and requiring greater #water consumption, maintenance, and chemical treatment than a clover lawn requires."

- Mining bee, Andrena species, too distant and skittish for close inspection
- Golden-green sweat bee, Augochlora pura (my favorite), checking out a log in my front yard

Australia's three nasty problems

#Habitat #destruction, invasive species and #climate change:

"The rate of habitat destruction shows little sign of improvement. Much vegetation continues to be removed for new #housing, mining and agriculture.

Every year, about eight million feral #cats and foxes kill 1.5 billion native reptiles, birds and mammals.

In 2022, 30 plants and animals were added to the official list of threatened species.
Threatened plants showed the worst decline (72%), followed by birds (62%) and mammals (33%).

Australia’s emissions are not falling anywhere near fast enough. They were almost the same in 2022 as in the previous year. And our national emissions remain among the highest in the world per person."

Vast national park to protect native animals 🇦🇺

#Habitat for more than 50 threatened species will be preserved as part of a new land acquisition, becoming NSW’s 3rd largest national park.

The 437,394-hectare site, called Thurloo Downs, 250 klms from Bourke in the state’s north-west, contains globally significant arid zone #wetlands, salt lakes, playas and other geological formations unprotected elsewhere in NSW.

The area is home to #birds including the critically endangered plains wanderer, vulnerable pink cockatoos and the endangered painted snipe; #lizards such as the crowned gecko; #marsupials including sandy inland mouse and the stripe-faced dunnart, plus threatened plant species.

Thurloo is part of the Bulloo Overflow, a critical #ecosystem for huge numbers of #waterbirds, particularly in breeding seasons.

Hey, if you're here because of the Fujitsu Habitat demo, Did you know that the game it was based on is open source?

Yes that's right, Lucasfilm's Habitat was open sourced by Fujitsu back in 2013.

Randy Farmer founded the NeoHabitat project to port the Habitat server to modern technology. Well we did that and then some! Most of the original Habitat world from 1987/88 has been restored.

You can login using an emulator or even real hardware!

An image of a real Commodore 64, running the NeoHabitat client. On the screen we see the original 1987 Lucasfilm's Habitat title screen, which you would see before logging into the virtual world.
A scene from NeoHabitat, which is a modern day revival of Lucasfilm's Habitat, the first ever graphical MMO. Four avatars can be seen standing around a fountain, which was the main area people would gather in the virtual world of Habitat.
