So, I just read that Ann Leckie has two published novels I have not read. I thought I'd buy the ebooks--I like to support the author. I can't. The ebooks (from Hachette) are DRM-encumbered, and I don't buy DRM-damaged ebooks. So, Hachette: sale you just lost. I'm sure Tor has some unmarred ebooks I can get.

@torrentfreak Copyright should go back to 14 years, with one 14-year renewal term. This would follow the letter and spirit of the #Constitution, as copyright was originally intended to be.

Le #web est devenu très hostile à l'utilisateur depuis quelques années, c'est insupportable. Depuis que le site dpreview.com a annoncé sa fermeture imminente (dégât collateral de la purge chez #amazon) je tente d'en archiver le contenu avec archivebox.io, même avec une URL toutes les 30-60s je me fais bloquer par l'hébergeur. Dément. J'ai dû faire un montage avec #tor pour contourner et c'est loin d'être parfait.

I'm not a lawyer, but based on what I've read in the opinion and heard of the arguments, it does not look to me that the Internet Archive has a very good chance to succeed in an appeal. While I could be wrong here (and there's still the possibility of a settlement) libraries should prepare for both short-term and long-term consequences of that.
The Maximum Minimum Competence this weekend is on the Internet Archive loss to book publishers stemming from the archive’s National Emergency Library program.
Please, Internet Archive, don't get yourself shut down.

Oral arguments are done n the #Hachette et al vs #InternetArchive #ControlledDigitalLending case.
It seemed to me there weren't many actual facts at issue. (The dispute over the study on 2020Q2 & Q3 circulation was over the import & relevance of the study, not over its data.) That makes me expect this case to be decided by a summary judgment, rather than by a trial. (There's a lot of argument over potential future facts; I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think that's usually in a jury's purview?)

Over 300 people are on the call (non-parties like me are in listen-only mode). I'm hearing a judge question the plaintiff on whether there are material disputed facts in what I think is their opening argument.
