But, by closing schools, the effect appears to have been to destroy value in the form of real estate prices.
Using a sample of houses from a single neighborhood in Hamilton, we estimate that closing a school may have wiped millions in value from neighboring properties.
The cost is hidden: school boards may save money, but property owners dearly pay for those savings.

Why does this matter? In the last 20 years school boards across Ontario closed schools to satisfy the province that facilities are used to "capacity".
The objective of this policy is to save taxpayer money in operation and maintenance of schools.

@RM_Transit #HamOnt has a huge suburban contingent. A BRT would get crept into nothing. BRT is not politically possible here for a first step into higher-order transit, the bus lane fiasco proved that.
In this city, BRT is the option pushed by people whose preferred transit solution is *nothing* and will use BRT as the thin end of a wedge to get that. So the political reality is "LRT or nothing".
@RM_Transit we've been trying to get that LRT project started here in #HamOnt for like 15 years.

"Hamilton is looking at new rules designed to stop renovictions — the first bylaw of its kind in Ontario, staff say.
"The proposal comes as the city has seen a 983 per cent increase in the number of renoviction notices, N13s, issued to tenants between 2017 and 2022, said Monica Ciriello, director of licensing and bylaw enforcement, at a committee meeting Thursday.
