A monoband resonant antenna is dead cheap. Speaker wire from the hardware store, an afternoon to fiddle the right length (you'll need it first time). Absolutely worth it! A tuner is more complicated and expensive than a couple of wires.
A short tuned antenna at a good height reaches DX much better than a full-size too low.
Tuners allow manageable antenna sizes on low bands. I simply cannot fit any 80m full-size.

In real-life #hamradio #antenna systems, there are lots of differences between tuner vs. resonant.
As @quantensalat mentioned, bandwidth. Yes. Resonant antennas have limited bandwidth, tuners can be re-adjusted. I have an odd-length dipole I can tune on 10,12,15,17,20,30,40 m.
@hb9iah mentioned losses. Yes. No tuner losses without tuner. Cable losses are least with cable impedance at the antenna end. Place the tuner at the antenna end is good, but difficult. I prefer low-loss cable.

Nice tropospheric ducting opening from NZ to eastern Aus. Worked Nick ZL1IU for the 2nd time today with strengthening signals. Also wked Alan ZL1RQ, also on the North Island, just now. 2200km is a very long hop for the 2m band, which normally only reaches to the radio horizon, which is about 80km for me. #hamradio

I am still not fully convinced I understand how an antenna tuner works.
If I have an antenna with a 3:1 match and a tuner brings that down to 1.0:1 and the radio can then send its full 100W, how much power is effectively radiated? Is it around 75W or 100W?
If itโs 75W, where does the lost power go (heat in the tuner?) and if itโs 100W, whatโs worse about this setup than the same antenna slightly adjusted to be resonant by itself (assuming lossless coax and tuner)? ๐ค

Strongly considering rolling my #HamRadio toots back into this account.
I spun up @b4ux1t3@mastodon.radio about a year ago to keep from doing any radio spam to folks who follow me who are only interested in the other stuff I talk about (ttrpg, programming, random parenting stuff, etc.).
But, as a result, I kind of just... Don't ever talk about radio stuff, at all. It's too much friction to hop on another account, even on phanpy where it's two clicks.
I dunno, I guess I'll have to think on it some more.

Mind your drive level on #FT8 #hamradio. Overdriven sigs cause 'splatter,' an extremely wide signal which interferes with other operators on the band and reduces readability of the overdriven signal. Should be ZERO deflection on the ALC meter. Set the radio RF power to 100% & manage RF power output with the audio level being fed to the radio. If the radio's RF power level is set low, even proper audio input levels will cause splatter as the radio clips to meet the RF power setting.

I have been pleasantly surprised to see how well my Chameleon Antenna F-Loop is working inside on my kitchen table. It's rainy here today and I don't have great options for a permanent outdoor installation.
I've got it setup and have been doing FT8 QSO's most of the day at 10w with my Xiegu G90. It's not the most optimal antenna, but every antenna is compromised in some way.

In order to make the first human #HamRadio contact from space during STS-9, Owen Garriott had to unpack this special Motorola Radio and an antenna that attached to the shuttleโs window.

I have noticed many new hams complain of not being able to get into stations, because of pileups, and it's because they are using spotting networks/QRZ hot list/etc. to find stations (rather than the big knob on their radio). It's ALWAYS easier to find a station calling CQ by spinning the dial rather than waiting until they're trending/popular and hard to contact. #hamradio #tips
