Today in Writing History May 22, 1967: Writer and activist Langston Hughes died. Hughes was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the early pioneers of Jazz Poetry. During the Civil Rights Movement, from 1942-1962, he wrote a weekly column for the black-owned Chicago Defender. His poetry and fiction depicted the lives and struggles of working-class African Americans. Much of his writing dealt with racism and black pride. Like many black artists and intellectuals of his era, he was attracted to communism as an alternative to the racism and segregation of America. He travelled to the Soviet Union and many of his poems were published in the CPUSA newspaper. He also participated in the movement to free the Scottsboro Boys and supported the Republican cause in Spain. He opposed the U.S. entering World War II and he signed a statement in support of Stalin’s purges.

It’s kind of amazing that Ma$e, Cam’ron, and Jim Jones were childhood friends. I’ve always been fond of Harlem rappers and their extra flash and pinache. It’s kind of amazing that half of the major harlem rappers of the late 90s early 2000s were all friends.

Aside from Andrew Young, who remains with us, Harry Belafonte, one of Harlem’s most legendary sons, was the last giant of the Black liberation/civil rights movement. A towering figure. A close friend and confidante of Dr. Martin Luther King. The deep impact that Sir Harry (as I call him) had in activism and human rights in the 1960s and beyond is immeasurable.

I've become a true fan of #Harlem on #Netflix because it features four gorgeous black women who are as beautiful, pulled together and messy as any white gal portrayed on TV. It's real yet doesn't bottom feed in the black experience.

“Directly concerned with the race problem, my own poem, I, Too, written in 1920 when I was eighteen years old, has over the years been translated into many languages and is still being reprinted in anthologies around the world.” — Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I’ll sit at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,

“Eat in the kitchen,”
Then.
Besides,
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—

I, too, am America.

— Langston Hughes

A brown Abyssinian cat perched on top of some wooden shutters facing away from the camera, looking out the window into the street. The window is framed by old fashioned brown wood. I captured this sunrise over 145th Street in Harlem on January 26th, 2018 at 7:27am

#Photography #GoodMorning #Sunrise #NYC #Harlem

An urban landscape bathed in golden light. A tall 16x9 aspect ratio with the sun towards the top of the frame. Indistinct buildings on either side of a road catch the light on their edges. A metal curb makes a dramatic vertical line through the frame reflecting the sun. A tall signpost reaches into the sky. Beams of light emanate from the sun in all directions.
