I have been putting up some posts about my garden plants and bees lately and because I follow the tomatoes and beekeeping hashtags I throw those on there but that's the first thought and not for search discoverability.
There are some things that you wonder what hashtag might be appropriate or popular so I let the autocomplete tell me some tag has 2 posts per week usually which isn't inspiring.
I used #hashtags on a post so I thought I better click on it to see the activity.
Now obviously there are limitations to finding anything on mastodon if it's not #hashtagged but that still doesn't make things hidden unless the post is restricted.
On #hashtags there is the issue of people using but not following or looking at them and that is besides the point of most people not using them for content others would like to discover here.
#hashtags on #Fediverse are like #RailwayStations, a useful destination on their own and also transfer points to new #adventure!

People say the hastags are the key to finding interesting people and posts on Mastodon. It's one of those things people say, and we all go, "Yeah, yeah, I know", and never actually use hashtags. What I first didn't get about Mastodon is, that people follow #hashtags and those have great reach.
So, whenever you #write <-- about something, check out if you could infuse a hashtag there.
And you can always add some hashtags at the bottom. I tend to follow people based on two things - interaction with my posts/answers and content they post that my followed hashtags present me with.

Better use of the #Fediverse
As @Porpentina2017 writes below, to get a meaningful feed you need to #FollowFollowFollow and #ABB--#AlwaysBeBoosting.
However, as there mostly is no #FulltextSearch, #Hashtags are very important.
Other people can then use them to #mute only posts with certain content instead of you as a person, or by even #unfollowing you.;
or they can use it to be updated about a #hashtag in general.

🔁Boost🔁 is what moves info around.
There is no algorithm, we choose and not some algorithm under corporate control. We choose by 🔁boosting🔁 posts and by using #hashtags.
If I put hashtags more at the bottom of a post it is kind to those using screen readers, partially sighted, blind etc. Fediverse has a good reputation for inclusion, we must keep it going.

You can also follow #Hashtags under #Calckey or even just #Keywords that are not necessarily written as #Hashtag. The corresponding #Feature under Calckey is called "#Antennas". You can find it by clicking on "More!" in the left column of the web interface.
Regarding #Apps that support #Calckey, there is a lot going on at the moment. (Calckey is still a relatively young #service in the #Fediverse #Network.) E.g. #Fedilab (for #Android phones) is working on an #Integration of #Misskey & #Calckey into their #App (supports #Mastodon & #Peertube so far, and is imho one of the best, if not the best #Fediverse #App). But they have also already announced that it will take some time to develop. Even though it might be a bit hard for you right now: Please be a bit patient and give #Calckey a chance. It is imho a much more powerful #Fediverse #Service with a lot more #Features than #Mastodon.

You know #Mastodon should never take away #CamelCase from your #hashtags, it should put the camel case in where it's absent.
The key to discoverability are #hashtags.
If you want to be found, use hashtags. If you want to find someone, look for hashtags. Hashtags in your profile, hashtags in your posts. Don't sit there and wait for Mastodon and the whole Fediverse to become like Twitter so you can continue to use it like Twitter.
Unfortunately, exactly that is what many Twitter refugees still do. They aren't used to using hashtags, so they don't. Instead, they expect some hidden magic to bring them together with like-minded people.
But the first step is to use hashtags yourself so that others can find you more easily.
There are also user directories which you can join if you want to and where you can find other users, for example fediverse.info which has the advantage of not only covering Mastodon.
Generally, in the Fediverse, you can't just consume. You have to partake actively. If you want to be found, do something for it.
I don't know if you are able to see my replies to others, I explain in some detail there.
My problem was with a VERY small server. I am hosting a test server with only about 6 accounts. My server is only aware of hashtags used by accounts that it is aware of and it is only aware of the accounts followed by users on my server. This means that I am not able to find MOST content via hashtags.
This is one potential reason NOT to create a single user server.
Almost without fail when someone on Mastodon is complaining about low engagement they are not using #hashtags effectively, if at all.
Seriously, hashtags are super important for discoverability on #mastodon as we know it.
So add your important featured hashtags to your profile and use hashtags liberally and descriptively on your posts. Because it matters and it works!
Thanks for these replies. I created an account where I could have discussions on a niche topic. I don't want to follow a bunch of people who only rarely mention this topic, I hoped to follow the hashtag and reply to people through the hashtag.
Because I'm on my own server which is not aware of many people, the hashtag is pretty useless. It seems, I would have to follow a lot of people before hashtags are useful.
Is this correct? Alternatives?

If under threat from a predator, fungus, or drying out, the developing tadpoles will drop into the water below to continue their development.

May I suggest that you add hashtags to your posts.
That is the only way of discovery on mastodon, as people search & either follow or pin hashtags, as there is no algorithm to automatically suggest posts to users.

@atomicpoet I would add one feature, which would be much easier to implement, than complete fulltext, and which is badly need:
Fediverse-wide hashtag search. Currently, only toots which made somehow their way to Federated timeline are search (I suspect). But unlike ordinary toot content, hashtags just beg to be searched fediverse-wide, not only locally. Peers should export their hashtags and when toot includes hashtag, it should really find its way even to instance where nobody follows anybody from the instance of origin....
Adding #hashtags helps a lot for reach.

@radicalaipod @shengokai one main point regarding the #timeline/ #newsfeed and searching on mastodon are #hashtags. So one hint e.g. to get a nice and helpful newsfeed: follow not only people you like, start following specific hashtags. And for your own posts use them as much and helpful as possible.
As soon as I found out what I'm really interested in and what hashtag this suits best, I never got bored or overwhelmed again, even at the beginning without knowing anyone.
