Appleby Castle

https://justin-farrimond.pixels.com/featured/appleby-castle-justin-farrimond.html

The beautiful Appleby Castle in Cumbria, Northern England. During the 12th century King Arthur stayed here before defeating some French people in Torquay. It's said that when lightning hit the castle on July 20th 1969, disrupting the wedding of Billy Bremner to a horse, that it was a meteorological issue and unrelated to the moon landing.

Black and white portrait photograph showing a railway bridge to the left and a castle to the right. It's a sunny morning and there's barely a cloud in the sky. There's one long one but that could be an aircraft condensation trail. Or perhaps, something more sinister. Even more sinister than that house you walk by every day, the one with the rotten window frames and dirty net curtains. Yes, now you know what I'm talking about. They say that no glory can prepare you for mud in the eye and yet you still insert that cotton bud into your ear canal. Here's waving the flag for rusty before the next building falls.

The conservation of religious heritage still in use poses a number of very complex problems: "Conservation of Living Religious Heritage" (Nicholas Stanley-Price Robert Killick Herb Stovel, 2003).

#OpenAccess #Libraries #Books #Heritage

@academicchatter
@histodons
@religion

"Sometimes the conservator’s instincts (to preserve material fabric and to minimize change) run counter to the religious community’s interest in continuity and renewal. The traditional desire of resident
monks to renew painted surfaces can sometimes conflict with official conservation policy, as has happened at the World Heritage site of Dambulla in Sri Lanka. At Anthony Island on Canada’s West Coast, also a World Heritage site and home to the last surviving in situ cluster of Haida Indian totem poles, the choice of ‘continuity’ as the primary conservation goal has meant allowing poles to decay, while resisting calls from conservators to have them removed to museum environments".

The Royal Collections Gallery is a new museum in Madrid, whose construction, over the last 25 years, has uncovered part of the Moorish wall with which the city was founded in the 9th century.

Items span from the Spanish Empire of the Habsburgs to the Bourbon dynasty collected by Spanish monarchs over five centuries.

The relationship between false memories, the construction of historical narratives and the creation of heritage (among other topics) has been studied by Lowenthal in his fascinating "The Past is a Foreign Country".

"National efforts to fashion praiseworthy pasts resembled individual needs to construct viable life histories".

"And the fictional past has another advantage: because it is contrived, it must make sense. Contrariwise, history must in part baffle".

"Everyone revises the past to make it theirs. Retooling the past to our needs and desires, we merge into it, conform it with ourselves, and ourselves with it, matching our self-images and aspirations".

The single level building is described as 'contemporary classical' with influences like the Parthenon in Greece shown in its numerous columns around the exterior.

Wide image looking across the lake to the shoreline which gives a mid-line to the frame. Trees line it with the building behind. The sky is thick with white clouds and small openings showing blue sky.. There are 3 birds in flight.

This is something I hadn't heard about and am not sure what to think. Mostly I'm wondering why the first I heard about it is from a British paper. I read a lot of news to miss something local to me like this.

Dunnottar Castle

A few very well-known views from the approach to the castle and surrounding cliffs.

Hardly an original location, but when it's the only place in the country where it's not raining, it has to be done.

Even on a dull day it looked impressive - if anything, the mist and distant sea haar merging into the sky lend something to the atmosphere.

Mollabashi House is a historical monument located in the center of Isfahan, #Iran.

Each room in the mansion has specific decoration —#painting, stained glass, mirrored walls, #art & #writing —that demonstrate different #architecture of Qajar & Safavid eras.

The house was purchased by Motamedi #family & recently opened to visitors after several years of reconstruction.

A popular #tourism attraction, it’s registered as a #national #heritage site

Why every single statue should come down (Gary Younge 2017).
"Statues are symbols of reverence; they are not symbols of history. They elevate an individual from a historical moment and celebrate them. As such, it represented a sanitised, partial and selective version of history, based less in fact than toxic nostalgia and melancholia. It’s not history that these statues’ protectors are defending: it’s mythology".

Ornate classical stonework above a window. In stone relief the words FACTS NOT OPINIONS. On the glass in modern lettering the number 99 and words KIRKALDY HOUSE
Sign on yellow London brick wall: "Kirkaldy Testing Works
This building was built in 1874 for David Kirkaldy (1820-1897). In 1857 Kirkaldy helped form the Institution of Engineers in Scotland and was the first person to set up a load testing machine for construction materials powerful enough to deal with the largest specimens. The original 48 foot long machine, able to apply a load of over 300 tons, is still in position here.

I'm a former National Park Service person - part of their climate change team - so want to add a note to this map and a caution about what it shows:

There are currently 423 units of the national park system. All of these are national parks. The units with the designation National Park (the 59 or so shown on this map) are by and large a function of history. "National Park" was used for units set up in the early history of the NPS, which is when many of the large parks known for their scenery were set up. Congress began to diversify national park designations - National Seashore, National Recreation Area, National Historical Site, etc. - in the mid-20th century. These aren't any less national parks, they just have more descriptive names.

Why recognizing this matters - the 423 units of the national park system cover many aspects of US history - and include many that are trying bring more balance and equity to national-scale stories - ex. Stonewall National Monument, Cesar Chavez National Monument, Rosie the Riveter National Historical Site. But none of these are named National Park. So when maps that show only National Parks are made and shared, they are cutting out major parts of US heritage that are also protected and important to see.

Thanks for the space to share this!

I recommend reading this 1983 Cato/Heritage document, "Achieving a Leninist Strategy"

https://www.cato.org/sites/cato.org/files/serials/files/cato-journal/1983/11/cj3n2-11.pdf

It outlines how to privatize Social Security (convince the public it is "going broke") but I see it as a basis for their entire attack on democracy. Convince the public democratic government doesn't work.

You see this strategy everywhere. The Palestine train derailment is a great example.

One innovative aspect of the #Architectural Ghosts exhibition--considered in the light of both general curatorial policy about the handling of original objects and questions about uniqueness, authenticity, and destruction or repatriation of #cultural #heritage, was the display of #3D-printed copies of some exhibition objects, with an invitation to visitors to touch, draw, comment, and reflect.

St Mary’s Guildhall in Coventry. Augmented reality on a tablet let’s you see the newly discovered Medieval kitchens come alive (the finest example in the country apparently.) Both the intact medieval hall and its huge tapestry, made in 1510, were breathtaking! I adored this place- it’s so evocative. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here and Henry VI moved his court here for 4 years- effectively making Coventry the capital city. ❤️ Loved the marks etched on the walls to add protection from those pesky witches 🧙#history #heritage

I was intrigued by the headline of this article - but it is full of lazy assertions, and ended up with a totally different conclusion - that the headquarters of the moribund #GreatBritishRailways concept could 'save' #Doncaster, not #tourism.

This is a shame because Doncaster could still genuinely be a pleasant place that could attract visitors with a proper action plan for its #heritage.

30 or so high-level execs in the rail industry will not.
