It is the Everest Day on Monday. The mountain was climbed for the first time 70 years ago on this day, when Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary stood on its top.

@GrrlScientist When you dont take charge, you create a vacuum charlatans exploit:

Our water scarcity became an issue back then and the populist ChiefJustice of the SupremeCourt decided the answer was building another mega-dam, established a "Dam Fund", and forced every gov employee to "donate".

The guy retired, the money went poof.

According to a new study that used satellite data, the Himalayan glaciers are melting faster than previously thought. The study found that the glaciers lost 15 percent of their ice volume between 2000 and 2018, equivalent to 8.3 billion tonnes of water per year. The melting glaciers threaten millions of people who depend on them for water, agriculture, and hydropower.

The #Himalayasโ€™ Vanishing Act: Underestimated #Glacier Loss Unveiled

ESA, April 10, 2023

"Ice loss from Himalayan glaciers flowing into lakes has been underestimated by 6.5% between 2000 and 2020, impacting predictions for glacier demise and water resource management for over 1.3 billion people in #Asia. Researchers call for incorporating subaqueous mass loss in future glacier estimates and models."

#GlacialMelt is Dispossessing #Nepalโ€™s #Indigenous Communities

Shrinking glaciers are forcing residents to flee, leaving a scattering of ghost towns across the countryโ€™s unforgiving north.

By Tulsi Rauniyar, April 04, 2023

"The indigenous communities of the upper #Himalayas are known for their age-old lifestyle, which has adapted to one of the most hostile landscapes in the world. The people of Upper Mustang are some of the last guardians of the Tibetan spiritual identity, whose century-old cultural identity and practices have been weakened by mass out-migration."

The reason? #ClimateChange !

Lhamu Tsering, a former inhabitant of the region describes the situation: "More than a decade ago, when it snowed, it would come up to here. But now, itโ€™s barely a few inches. The mountains barely have any snow on them. In the months of March and April, the melting of snow and the occurrence of rainfall would provide sufficient irrigation to the fields, enabling the sowing of various crops such as barley, wheat, peas, and potatoes. But with lower levels of snowfall, the sowing season has gone awry."

Morning light in the Himalayas. We're at about 4500m elevation, with crystal clear skies and not a cloud to be seen, not even clinging to Everest itself.

I love working with wide-open apertures. It helps when the scenery is this special though, can hardly take a bad photo here. This lake is just below Mount Chola.

Good morning from Pisang in the Annapurnas. I'm here with a few friends exploring locations and getting to know the local guesthouses.

Found a lovely family making fresh coffee yesterday so that was a treat.

We're well above 3000m of elevation here, so the air is a little thin. The winter light is giving us plenty of joy though and we're just excited to be here surrounded by some of the world's highest peaks.
