In the 10th century, Persian traveler Buzurg ibn Shahriyar wrote in his book about a jinn market located in Kashmir.

According to local informants the jinn marketplace was located in luscious gardens among running streams. The jinn could be heard around the gardens buying and selling, but no one ever saw them.

Sadly he doesn't record more than that. Even though, it sounds like a fascinating setting for a story. 🧞 🧞‍♀️

Spotted in Venice: a model of a tank designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1487. This fighting vehicle was designed to be driven straight onto a battlefield and to decimate the enemy with its 360-degree cannons. It was powered by two large cranks operated internally by four men.

Trying to learn more about Spanish history and Kingdoms of Faith was a bust. (Almost exclusive focus on dynasties and war rather than cultural history, and barely discusses Jews?)

So let's try another angle. Anyone got a good cultural history of Sephardic Jews in Medieval Spain?

Within living memory. Roy Wood Jr. nails down what that means in *Imperfect Messenger*:

*You know what's wild about a civil rights museum? What's wild is to realize [that] most of the people in the pictures are still alive. The Black people in the pictures are still alive, so that means the White people are still alive too. Where they at? Those are the people *I *want to have a dialogue with*.

“The Kiss of Death” from Poblenou Cemetery, Barcelona. An inscription reads: "So his youthful heart is fading. In his veins his blood is freezing, and all strength has slipped away. Faith is leveled as he falls into the arms of Death. Alas!” Photo: Stephan Harmes.
