Hey @histodons, I have a puzzle for you. I'm looking at a payroll register from a cotton mill in 1867 and can't figure out what the columns signify. They're unlabeled. The center column makes sense as amount of money earned, and you'd expect the two to the left to be # of hours worked and rate of pay. But there's no way to combine cols. 1 and 2 in such a way that you get the values in col. 3. Also, the writer uses both superscripts (e.g., 26²) and dashes. I'm stumped.

A well known poignant poem from Countee:

“Incident”
Once riding in old Baltimore,
Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
Keep looking straight at me.

Now I was eight and very small,
And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, “Nigger.”

I saw the whole of Baltimore
From May until December;
Of all the things that happened there
That’s all that I remember.

Countee Cullen would be 120 years old in a few days. Not as well known as poets like Langston Hughes, Cullen was an intimate and prominent participant in the Harlem Renaissance. His verses explored themes of identity, race, and cultural heritage, and challenged the prevailing societal norms of the time. He had an elegant craftsmanship that went a long way toward elevating the status of Black American poetry in mainstream literary genres.

#OnThisDay in #history - in 1199, John "Lackland" became king of #England after the death of his elder brother, Richard I.
Richard had named John as his heir, skipping over his nephew Arthur (as the boy was only 12 and John was an adult), but Arthur rallied forces to fight against John to take his inheritance.
After being taken captive, Arthur disappeared, like several other English princes, never to be seen again. John ruled until his death in 1216.

#OnThisDay, 23 May 1988, four women storm the BBC news studio whilst the news is live on air, protesting the introduction of Section 28. Section 28 banned the “promotion of homosexuality” by local government in the UK, and was intended to stop LGBT+ campaigns for equal rights.

It was not repealed until 2003.

Anna Elizabeth Dickinson’s speeches showcased intellectual rigor, as she employed logical reasoning and evidence to support her calls for equality and justice. Indeed, in her prime, she was considered the equal of the great Frederick Douglass. And she, like he, actively influenced and shaped the discourse surrounding the abolition of slavery. She died at the age of 89 on October 22, 1932 in Goshen, New York.

In an age of the greatest orators, Anna Dickinson was one of the greatest. What made her stand out first and foremost was that, by using metaphors, sharing firsthand accounts, vivid descriptions, and personal anecdotes, that illustrated the horrors of bondage on individuals and families, she HUMANIZED the enslaved.

Born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on October 28, 1842, the abolitionist orator Anna Elizabeth Dickinson was rhetorically brilliant. She gave powerful speeches that vividly described the horrors of slavery, giving a voice to the suffering endured by the enslaved. She was without fear when she challenged politicians by urging them to take IMMEDIATE action against slavery at a time when women were relegated to “female matters” in the home.
