June 6 - the birthday of John Trumbull (1756-1843)- an American artist of the early #independence period, notable for his #historical paintings of the #American Revolutionary War, of which he was a veteran. Trumbull's Declaration of Independence (1817), one of his four paintings that hang in the United States Capitol rotunda, is used on the reverse of the current United States two-dollar bill.

The beautiful brick armoury at historic Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, as seen on an early spring morning. Wooden fencing fills the foreground and a tall bare tree frames the warm red brick of the solid wall surrounding the armoury.

Beautiful Colonial Williamsburg was once the capital of the Colony of Virginia, and as such housed the munitions / fire arms and muskets, swords, canons and other articles of warfare for the area.

Seen here is the reconstructed armoury / armory which housed this weaponry. It is situated behind a beautiful brick wall and charming split rail wooden fence ... both typical and popular construction seen throughout Williamsburg.

Tomorrow, all being well, I shall be #routemaking along a number of potential off-road routes between #Ashbourne and #Ilam in #Derbyshire to see which one I prefer to include as the best walking path for my #GrandTourOfDerbyshire. (Derbyshire-ish - I will wander into neighbouring counties to pick up the good bits whenever I'm near)

And yes, I know #SlowWays are "already doing this", but they're not. SlowWays goes from #town centre to town centre as a walking alternative to conventional travel. My routes go along the spaces between towns, and avoid going through towns as much as possible, creating unique (or rediscovering #historic) #greenways that cross the #British #countryside linking places of interest to me without relying on road or town networks.

It's an interesting exercise, and it took me a while to get my head around it. We tend to think in terms of town to town when travelling, but there's no need when #walking.

Mind-blowing to think these ‘cup and ring marks’ were created by people between 6000 and 3500 years ago.
A form of prehistoric art found across the Atlantic seaboard of Europe, but similar features have been found in many other places such as Australia, the Americas and Pacific Islands.
These stones are incredibly hard and so you have to really admire the effort that must have been applied to create the designs.

My job occupies a historic jail, so I'm interested in prison architecture. I got a chance today to get pictures of the RI Maximum Security Prison, which put my little county jail out of business in 1957.

The architecture is very forceful, reflecting the 19thc belief in the power of institutional reform.

Interestingly, I was not interrupted while photographing.

Time for another train post.

In 2017 I revisited Porthmadog, Wales, a small town with three (!) railway stations: the mainline one, and two belonging to tourist railway companies.

The most notable is Porthmadog Harbour Station, home to the Ffestiniog Railway, the world’s oldest continuous railway company - it’s been in existence since the 1830s.

In addition to the Ffestiniog trains which head into the mountains of Snowdonia, the company also runs the Welsh Highland Railway, a route pieced together from former narrow-gauge railways. @NarrelleMHarris and I jumped aboard on a sunny September day to enjoy a ride through the Welsh countryside to imposing Caernarfon Castle and back. Great day out.

America has a powerful way to reduce #ChildPoverty & the pandemic's large-scale social experiments proved it: Expanding the #ChildTaxCredit (an advance of approx $300/month) in 2021 was the lead reason US child #poverty reached #HISTORIC lows that year.

It expired in 2021 & #Dems are fighting to save it but the #GOP has made it clear they want business #TaxCuts only, no talk of the CTC.

This is what happens when you demonize the poor.

Want to reference #historic #science diagrams instead for that 19th-century aesthetic? Nicholas Rougeux put together an interactive collage of Sowerby's #mineralogy that allows you to scroll through and interact with old-school #mineral specimens.

Sowerby's been in the grave for a hot minute, so this is solidly in the public domain.

@alfiegoodrich Love it @alfiegoodrich - that pop of yellow road paint just adds a nice finishing touch. Wonder if it would've worked with a Ford Fiesta instead of a supercar? 😂
Here's my yellow car offering then, a Trabant by one of the remaining stretches of the Berlin wall, two icons of that remarkable city
