But the movie side of things would be fine, as theaters still exist so not much would have changed there, good movies = more revenue and bad movies = less revenue.

Chaplin denied the charges, calling himself a “peace monger.” Nevertheless, he protested the HUAC hearings and the U.S. trials of Communist Party members. Representative John Rankin called Chaplin's presence in Hollywood “detrimental to the moral fabric of America.” Writer George Orwell prepared list of people he believed were communists, which he gave to British intelligence before he died in 1949. The list included Chaplin and Michael Redgrave, as well as Paul Robeson, Katherine Hepburn, John Steinbeck and Orson Welles.

I lived in DC but was in LA on a freelance PR job for Columbia. Driving Hollywood Blvd, this image of (OMG! is that) Annie Lennox ruled the scene from a billboard. Brian Donlevy and Glenda Farrell in the very enjoyable comedy-drama about a deep sea cable diver, “High Tension” (1936). I found this in the #CriterionChannel Allan Dwan collection, but I’m surprised I didn’t find it earlier.

Two-Faced Woman was an attempt to modernise and Americanise Garbo’s image. At the time, her fan base was shrinking in America, so she decided to pull the plug.
