ANNABELLE is a film full of texture, color, and some amazing little touches. This is another that’s rated poorly on Letterboxd and I wonder if the Warrens have something to to with what? The picture is technically robust, has a great story, and dives into the demonology deep end. The climax is a mixture of fright and sadness. It’s a pretty damned good movie.

THE AMITYVILLE HORROR is truly a cinematic experience. I loved the series of quick cuts and splicing. The film does a great job of keeping you on your toes. The score is a fairytale nightmare. It’s a classic movie that leans heavily into suspense. While it might be based on a sham, it’s an awesome movie.

THE LAST EXORCISM is a really unique entry in demon lore. I enjoyed the fake exorcist landing on something truly evil. It’s just not exactly what you’d expect. The movie does a great job of being serious while embracing the films that it honors. The effects are frenetic. It checks all the boxes.

DEMON HOUSE gets a bad rap. The opening montage is one of the bleakest and oppressive things I’ve seen in sometime. It’s an emotionally draining picture that just keeps getting worse. This is slow boil horror at its finest. It’s chock full of dread. I was holding my breath for a significant amount of this movie. It is definitely worth a watch.

BLOODY MOON is an awesome film. The movie has such a unique feel. The cinematography is excellent. The plot is wild and unique. The kill scenes are incredibly creative. It’s another film that steers away from slasher stereotypes. I love all the brutality. It’s a great picture.

SLEEPAWAY CAMP has some awesome practical effects. It’s another cast full of douchebags and that makes the killing so satisfying. The deaths are creative and unique. This is one of the rare 80s slashers that tried to get inventive and not follow the usual format. And holy shit. That ending.

THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW is a great example of why you don’t mess with old ladies. It’s another one of those movies where you love to hate the cast. The film was also technically solid. It’s one of the better middle grade slashers I’ve seen so far. The best place to hide a body is probably not the one setup for a funeral in the morning.

APRIL FOOL‘S DAY is the slasher version of BREAKFAST CLUB, except you hate all the characters. It’s like watching a joke show gone horribly wrong. We really love elaborate April Fool’s pranks in this movie. The audio mix is atrocious. It’s a middle of the road slasher with a series of awesome twists at the end. Don’t expect much, but it’s worth a watch.

X is one of my favorite films. I think I have to give this the slightest of edges over PEARL. I love the 70s style and the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE feel. There’s something about the dark smoky tone of the film that I find particularly enamoring.
(But then I think about the vibrancy of PEARL and the two major monologues of the film 😅).

Go to any horror convention and you'll find yourself surrounded by some of the sweetest people on earth.
Interesting side note (maybe it's the point) - there's lots and lots of costumes and cosplay. But no one ever dresses up as Freddy's victims or Jason's victims or Leatherfaces's victims. They dress as Freddy, Jason and Leatherface - as the monsters!
Horror movies empower its fans like nothing else.
Tobe Hooper didn't set out to make an iconic movie and movie character. He just wanted to tell a good story. He ended up changing the horror business and, in turn, the movie business. His movie got banned all over the place because of its gore.
Strange things is, there's almost zero gore in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Virtually all of it occurs offscreen - in the audience's mind. Also worth noting: The original Chainsaw (and its immediate sequel) are very funny in places. Gunnar Hansen's Leatherface is actually surprisingly soulful in places.
Among the other movies Tobe directed (and very, very well!) was Poltergeist. Because he did it for Spielberg - and because Spielberg did direct some second unit shots - people questioned whether Tobe did, in fact, direct Poltergeist. That's bullshit. The movie is filled with way more of Tobe's sensibilities than Spielberg's.

THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) is gritty, extreme, and perverse when you consider the year it was released. The opening scene is so bad ass. Picking up hitchhikers was a bad idea even in the 70s. This picture is gruesome and a direct assault to the senses. It wants to offend you. I’ve always loved it. The picture is an unapologetic Romero style of filmmaking.

LAKE PLACID is so campy and overwrought with tension and drama. I really loved every overboard death. The movie is creature feature with the knob cranked to 11. A deputy continuing to set off booby traps was amazing comic relief. AND MURDERING BETTY WHITE! This film is jam packed.

According to various dark scholars, the "Ill Omen" are a race of creatures that may have been the basis for Washington Irving 's "Headless Horseman." Few know the entities' origins, but they are characterized as ghastly horsemen with no head. However, it is said when they decapitate their victim they take the severed head as their own - the skull becoming wreathed in blue flames, slowly devouring the soul within. Their moniker comes from the fact that their arrival is preceded by bad omens - birds flying into windows, mirrors cracking, black cats crossing one's path, etc. One may also hear the tortured screams of the heads they've taken, bellowing in agony as their spirits are slowly burned away in cobalt fire.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is still the creepiest slasher franchise. The original film oozes tension. It’s a real nail biter from the opening boiler room scene. Robert Englung is a horror master. This movie took the genre and flipped it on its head.
