Rode out to the research fields for just a bit. The e-cargo quad has fat tires that handle well on gravel and dirt roads and fieldrows. #BikeTooter #PlantScience #Horticulture #CargoBike

Ti-trikes four-wheeled recumbent with a wooden cargo box reminiscent of an old '20s pickup truck bed. The seat is hot pink and there are black straps across the seat from my backpack hanging off it. The quad has a yellow dayglo fanion flag. There's mud on the fat tires from previous rides on muddy roads and fields around Davis. The quad is parked next to a row of young almond trees.

Just found a few more botanicals that I had tucked into another book. I can't remember what all of these were off the top of my head, but there are white and purple violets in here for sure. Also, Violets are edible and high in Vitamins C + A!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these yet, but this originally started out as an idea to collect, identify, and label local botanicals that I found around my area.

Then, I considered incorporating them into my art in some way, but today I figured I should at least scan them in case anything happens to the actual plant samples.

Bulbophyllum (fka Cirrhopetalum) Elizabeth Ann 'Buckleberry' FCC/AOS (B. longissimum x B. rothschildianum). B. 'Elizabeth Ann' was bred by S Low and registered with the RHS by J Chambers in 1969, and presumably 'Buckleberry' was a subsequent development, but I can't find that info. The furthest back I can find it is getting an AM/AOS in 1986.

My second #horticulture class begins this week!! I am excited to learn about soil chemistry.

We have to do a semester-long plant assessment, where we sow seeds in a couple pots, observe and catalogue their growth, etc etc.

Maybe this semester I'll actually hand in the FULL report instead of just half of it!!! (🤬😂)

.. oh, and the cats will have NO access to this room. For Reasons. ™

#gardening #learning

My setup for the plant assessment assignment!

Six brown seedling pots on a small side table, on terracotta saucers. In the background, three succulent pots (not part of the assignment 😅). There are LED grow lights over top of the plants.

#Dahlia 'Midnight Moon'. The RHS is the official registrar but they only publish annual lists of registrations rather than a compendium or keep a database so it's a Royal pain to search.

Any #gardeners advise? Bit worried about our oak tree 🌳 Black spots on all the leaves. I stood under the canopy and looked up and it appears to be all the way up. Not sure how old it is, it's taller than a two story and probably equal width 🤷‍♀️

Is the black an external or internal issue?

Any help appreciated 🙏🏾 #horticulture #nature

One from the vaults, today. Image scanned & restored by me, originated as _Mayflower Magazine_, March 1892, Vol VIII Plate No III. _Mayflower_ was a gardening magazine published by Childs nursery in New York state, USA, in the late 1800s into the early 1900s, with much truly useful info but of course an emphasis on what Childs sold.

#garden #gardening #flowers #horticulture #photography #bloomscrolling #botany

A chromolithograph labelled Crinum ornatum (now Crinum latifolium) and with the plate info as above. It shows white flower with a red stripe down each petal, a thick red stem, and a basal rosette of strappy deep green leaves. The chromolithograph process renders an image as overlapping plates of dots, lines and fields of a single colour, often many of them. The colours mix both by overprinting and by visual mixing of adjacent colours.

On invasive / non-native species, in response to https://twitter.com/majda72/status/1685669038033154048

I'm all for native plants and the reduction of invasives (ideally by them becoming food for something?), while also trying to operate from respect and understanding of non-native species. They didn't choose to be cultivated and domesticated in a foreign environment, or to end up as a seed on a truck or cargo ship traveling to a different climate/continent. This is a new frame for me, so I'm working on practicing it in reality — though there are cultures that have been integrating it, e.g. these perspectives and research from
Nicholas Reo and Laura Ogden.

I just moved here from @robyn@mastodon.gardensoul.org, which seems to have gone dark. 😟

I focus on pesticide-free #vegetable growing, and also like zone-hardy/native perennials.

Nice to meet you all 😀

@caffination I haven't run into any botany or horticulture-focused instances that I'm aware of, but a great way to find them might be to add some tags like: #botany #gardening #horticulture #plants

Female and male flowers of the aptly named 'Early Ehrhardt' walnut. Some of the trees in that germplasm orchard haven't even broken dormancy yet.

#Horticulture #flower #Botany

14x magnification photo of the female flowers of a walnut, with an emerging leaf bud as well.

The flowers are green, bulb-shaped, and emerge in translucent feather-like parts at the tip of the bulb. The walnut parts, including the leaf bud, are slightly fuzzy.
Long green tassel-like raceme which contains many small male walnut flowers that aren't fully opened yet. They'll produce pollen-which the wind will blow to receptive female flowers.

Many of the peaches are done blooming, but these dwarf peaches are still in full flower.

#Horticulture #Spring

View from near ground level over the "shoulder" of a dwarf peach in bloom with deep rose pink flowers. A little distance away, standard peaches can be seen finishing their bloom periods.

Because of the "Dancers on Film" acct, I've dug into a film I'd never heard of before and now I have the first musical number I've ever seen where the character is mulch-fluffing peach trees. 🤣

Didn't make it to the field, but that's a reason I have two almond trees in my trailer garden. Got a great photo of the initial cluster of leaves lengthening into a stem and more leaves.

#Almond #Horticulture #PlantMorphology

Photo through a hand lens of the initial cluster of leaves (which are big enough that most of them are out of frame). The lengthening stem is deep red because the chloroplasts haven't started making enough chlorophyll yet. But the new leaves and stipules are green because some is being made there. And there's an orange-ish red leaf that's still adhered to itself, staying protected until it's developed enough to risk unfurling.

I understand there will be some painful tradeoffs in order to cope with climate change, but this one seems very bad.

I could understand the balance if they were constructing a much-needed railway, but building it for buses that will still use the combustion engine seems a bum steer. To serve sprawl rather than building mixed-use infill and dense accessible affordable housing. Esp if the buses won't be publicly owned and fare-free.

Lichens on an old cherry tree.

#Horticulture #lichen #Mosstodon

Photo through a hand lens of two or maybe three types of lichen. One is grey-green, one is orange-ish and there's a bright yellow one that might just be a less-developed version of the orange one.

#Iris reticulata 'Alida', Crown Bulbs 1990. First of the potted bulbs to bloom this year! :pizzaparty:

#garden #gardening #flowers #horticulture #photography

A classic fleur-de-lis flower form with pale blue upright petals and falls that are pale blue with dark blue markings and a bright yellow "landing strip" down the middle. One spiky green leaf out of focus in the background. High white backdrop.
