I'm a bit baffled by this striking #hoverfly nectaring on #dandelion this morning. I thought at first Volucella pellucens, but the central band doesn't look quite right. Can anyone help? @kitenet

New hoverfly just dropped. Pretty sure I haven't seen this one before. Hoverflies have coloring like bees to scare away birds and other predators.

@kayucian I'd say some #hoverfly - #Syrphidae. But living in middle Europe I have no clue on north american species. Here at home I would suggest genus #Sphaerophobia or #Baccha @Hagukh

was so thrilled to discover this insect on the flower once I was home looking at pictures. I didn't know hoverflies, and hadn't even noticed it when I was next to the flower! they seem like really cool insects. they look half wasp half fly, but they are a fly and highly beneficial to gardens, so I read!! 😊

On a calm sunny morning, watching the behaviour of three quite different nectar-feeders on the flavour-of-the-week #wildflower here, "Red Deadnettle", more accurately Lamium purpureum, carpets of it on previously exposed ground.

The common solitary " #bumblebees" flying in bezier-shaped arcs, testing one flower on a head, and if dissatisfied, moving on at ground-level at least another metre in the same gentle arcs.

A common hive-type #bee, flying nearest-stem-to-nearest in fairly straight lines, walking from flower-to-flower on a stem, testing every one.

A large #hoverfly with a globular shiny brown abdomen, most amusing: tests one flower, leaps backwards 5cm, flies precisely circumferentially around the same floret always facing it, pounces on the next flower at 90°; repeat.... pings to vantage point 1 metre up, looks for the next flower-head.

edit - if you have a better idea what the 3rd insect is - it might of course not be a hoverfly despite its hovering - do let me know. No illustrations near enough in appearance to post. gone by the time I had camera.

This is the spectacular Pocota personata, a #hoverfly trying very hard to make you think it is a #bumblebee - check the antennae for the tell-tale difference. The photo shows my first encounter with this species, from a #DipteristsForum field trip last spring. This is a fairly rare and elusive #fly whose larvae develop in rot-holes in mature Beech trees. #insectodon #saproxylic #DeadWoodLife #entomology #Diptera

Bee - long antennae
Hoverfly - generally very small antennae

Bee - compound eyes tend to be smaller relative to head size with more space between them.
Hoverfly - head is almost all large eyes that look like dodgy 90’s rock star shades.

Bee - 4 wings
Hoverfly - 2 wings

Bee - Females can sting
Hoverfly - can’t sting

Bee - cuddly
Hoverfly - not so cuddly.

Today I want to stay in the #macro realm, but this time with a small #hoverfly sitting in the blossom of an evening #primrose.

I love the intense yellow colour, and I do think evening primroses are beautiful plants. Although, yes I know, you don't see much of it in this specific photo. But hey, a hoverfly!
