@Mrfunkedude last #hummingbird of the day didn't perch but drank a lot from the newly cleaned and refilled feeder. After a good long uninterrupted drink he headed off presumably to where he roosts and I headed in. #today

The #hummingbirds here are seriously awnry.

Rather than actually drinking all the nectar I make for them, they mostly like to just sit in the tree next to the feeder and gaurd it so that if - god forbid - another #hummingbird should come to drink from it, they chase them away before they get a chance to.

MY NECTAR. GO AWAY.

Hmpf.

So I go out this weekend and buy a SECOND feeder. Place it in the original spot (so they know where to find it) and move the 1st to a new spot, far away. So now, if 2 come along at the same time, they can each have their very own, private feeder.

But no. Not good enough.

3 times I see one fly to the old spot and just... hover... around the new one. Eyeing it skeptically.

THIS is not my feeder.

Until.... realization. Oh THERE it is, what's it doing all the way over there?

Now they just keep returning to the old one to drink and not even bothering with the new one.

Well. I tried.

Hummingbird.

This is probably a female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), but it's possible that it is a black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri). Almost all hummingbirds around here are ruby-throated, so that's what I'm going with. I would rather it be a black-chinned because they are rare, in this area anyway. This photo lacks the emerald feathers which is probably due to lighting.

I saw them! Watching through my binoculars, I saw the #hummingbird mom return to the nest and dip her beak down into it, and I saw the movement of little shapes reaching up to receive the food! Very exciting! I’d like to try again for a picture, but I don’t want to go out to the nest area for the second day in a row (she does NOT like humans to be anywhere in the yard, I mostly watch through a window). Maybe later this week.

I had a very limited window to try and take some video from above using my tripod extension before mom came back, never got a good focused shot but those aren’t eggs, which were clearly visible before. Could definitely be just-hatched babies. #hummingbird
