Square format shot looking straight out over a rolling sea coming into a beach.

The picture is taken using the intentional camera movement technique, which results in horizontal bands of tones with the white tops of the waves curving as they form, roll and break, and various blues and greens of the sunlit water being stretched across the frame.The lower part of the frame shows more white as the shallower foamy water advances up the beach towards us.
The horizon is two thirds up, with a mainly paler blue sky with a few fainter streaks of white as the clouds are stretched by the technique.

ICM Meets Ornithology

I wasn't expecting great things taking photos after sunset of rapidly moving birds.

At an effective focal length of nearly 900mm and 1/30th of a second whilst panning the ISO was sky high, even if the bird wasn't.

Although, in some of the less bad shots, you could actually tell what it was at least.

@moragperkins Thanks! I'd guess over-exposed a lot less; it was expired Kodacolor 200, hand-reversed, and probably exposed at 50, 25 at most. I used a ND8 filter IIRC.

I thought this one might be appropriate for the season, experimenting with rotation. I can't remember what the live subject was, but the result seems to be... ghosties!

A very dark browny-black image with a rotational swirly feel to it, slightly lighter orange in the bottom left hand corner. Near the centre are several weird lighter shapes that, at a pinch, one might believe to be ghostly figures! Made with intentional camera movement during a 2-second exposure using reversed Kodacolor film (redscaled), with a rotational movement of the camera. The original subject is lost to my mind!

A reddish-brown vaguely-defined path rises through the centre of this image, with a green textured band on either side, above which are vertical(ish) stripes. The image was made with a 2 second exposure on "redscale" film (reversed), moving the camera vertically and then horizontally during the exposure. Effects are unpredictable to say the least, but when it works out, can be quite mysterious and other-worldly.

Sometimes I Dream of You

A Sunset ICM

The Colours of Sunset

The last week has been fairly wet, with cloudy skies, so I thought an ICM of a sunset sky would brighten up the day. Another one that was taken just outside my home. The black parts are the roofs of nearby homes.

I'm really happy about the results of my evening trip to the motorway bridge a few days ago. This one's my favourite. I love the colours and shapes.
BTW: It's more or less straight out of camera. I just cut it to square format and pushed saturation and contrast. That's all.

Sunrise on the Peconic Bay, Long Island NY. The boat mooring caught my attention and those soft, lovely rays of sunrise. The idea that you can walk out your door and just witness the sun rising at the beach is so appealing to me.

i’ve done icm (intentional camera movement) with several cameras incl my pentax k10d, olympus e400, and mostly sigma fp

weirdly cameras vary in how good they are at it. the olympus sucked, not sure why. the sigma fp is second worst, probably bc of the digital-only shutter. but i got some good ones with it.

the k10d and canon 1d seem best, both SLRs (like the olympus), both CCDs (like the olympus).

so it’s not any one factor. idk what it is.

The yellow glow of sunset
I walked out my front door last night and spotted a fiery sunset behind the houses across the road. The colour slowly changed over the next ten minutes as the sun sunk further and further beyond the horizon.

I took 151 photos of the sky that night, most of them taken with me waggling my camera back and forth to capture some sweet ICM.

Hahaha, I literally took 151 photos of the sunset from the road outside my home a few minutes ago. Absolutely fabulous colours!

Streaks of Sunset Light

You may have seen the stunning sunset photo from Crosshaven that I shared yesterday. Well, here’s another shot of it.

This one doesn’t look like a typical sunset, does it? Except for the warm orange glow. That’s because I used a technique called Intentional Camera Movement, or ICM. I zoomed in on the boats in the water and moved the camera from side to side while taking the shot.
