EU-wide action is urgently needed to combat gender-based violence.

❗️1 in 3 women has experienced it.
❗️At least 2 are killed daily in Europe because of it.

Time to set up joint standards to prevent, protect and bring justice to victims.

No more havens of impunity.

How do you envision the Internet's future?

The Internet cannot work in isolation. Every population needs a certain caliber of skills in order to take advantage of what the internet offers. This is the training that needs to be promoted and provided to many communities. Education that can help populations make meaningful gain from the presence of the Internet. The future of the Internet is such that it will not be possible for anything to happen without it. This includes banking, education, supply of basic essentials, government services, everything. That is why it is so important for populations to be prepared for this eventuality.
What do you love about the Internet?

The most important resource today is ledge. The Internet has the ability to source in the most remote parts of the world. The Internet is also an employer from wherever one is located. The biggest trick is to figure out how to take advantage of its presence.
What brought you to the Internet Society? | started working for ISOC because the mission was very attractive to me. My profession has always been in technology in different fields. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the only parameter that kept the world moving was technology (Internet in this case). That is what kept the world moving through communication, updates on how to curb the pandemic, employment etc. | kept wondering, if there was no Internet in the world, the impact of the pandemic could have been so much higher. Those who did not have this Internet advantage suffered and are still trying to catch up. This is why working for an organization that has the aim of making the Internet available to everyone was very attractive.

For example, a rural community in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, is now being supplied with electricity because a community network was launched there. This drives me to support the vision of the Internet Society.

&
How do you envision the Internet's future?

I envision the Internet being upheld as a tool for advancement and not a threat. I envision our future Internet being a tool for economic and social empowerment that is safe for all to benefit from in an equitable manner. What brought you to the Internet Society?

I started working with the Internet Society because I saw that our hearts beat for the same cause, to ensure that a valuable resource such as the Internet is made available to everyone.

Why the Internet?

The Internet—and its pipelines, protocols, and constitutive infrastructure—should be for everyone. All the fields that rely on it: from open source software to social media cannot forget that creating projects meant to be for "everyone" exclude communities by default.

How do you envision the Internet's future?

An ideal global Internet does not exclude anyone, as well as enables mindful use.
What brought you to the Internet Society? I was an Early Career Fellow in 2022 with the Internet Society. As a researcher of open source communities and politics of infrastructure, I was interested in expanding my knowledge directly to internet infrastructure that belies both, which developed into a project about the politics of Internet satellites.

“Why are we outside Merri Health on Glenlyon Rd, #Brunswick, Dad?”

Me: Because 48 years ago Vida Little and others sought funding for a Community Health Centre under a Whitlam Government Scheme. They organised and campaigned and were successful. We need to celebrate and commemorate Vida Little with a statue or memorial. Too little do we commemorate women in social history. I called on #MerribekCouncil to address this on IWD last night.

Why the Internet?

As a "millenial’, I saw the Internet "take form" and transform from dial-up to fiber, wi-fi and all the changes and developments that came along. Still, there is an immense digital divide and people around the wrong struggle to keep safe when using the Internet. The discussion around these issues are high-level, technical and have the potential to impact billions of people around the globe, that sense of purpose has led me to work with the Internet Society. As a mum, I also have the vision the Internet continues to be a safe place for my children to navigate, and that children in the world can access and are connected to the Internet in a trustworthy manner.
How do you envision the Internet's future?

The Internet will continue to have challenges as technology evolves, so I envision a future where more people are equipped with access and knowledge to join the goals of keeping the Internet globally connected, secure and trustworthy.
What brought you to the Internet Society? I am passionate about the Internet, when I applied to work at the Internet Society my goal was to deepen my knowledge on how to work closely with topics related to Grow and Defend the Internet. It has been such a great ride to work alongside colleagues around the world standing for the same ideals.

This remains till today.
How do you envision the Internet's future? Accessible everywhere and trustworthy. What do you love about the Internet? | was privileged to grow up with the Internet from an early age and it had a huge role in broadening my horizons, perspectives and understanding. By advocating for an open internet, we can create a more equitable and inclusive society that empowers people to learn, grow, and connect with each other.

First time trying Ampersand Gessobord. First off, it doesn't have enough texture for pastel (and they don't claim to do). So I mixed water mixable oil and gesso for the underpainting. The texture, the "feel" is very different from paper. Definitely an interesting experiment!

"Womanhood is traditionally associated with birth and creation. But before every new creation, one has to first dismantle of what currently is." a motorcycle metaphor for #IWD2023 #InternationalWomensDay.
See alt text for full quote and attribution.

Five women motorcycle riders in power poses around a dismantled motorcycle that is being rebuilt. They are in the garage of Alternate Adventures in Belize. Here is the message that goes with this photo on Instagram: "Womanhood is traditionally associated with birth and creation. But before every new creation, one has to first dismantle of what currently is. Breakdown precedes rebuild. In solidarity to women around the globe that live under suppression and in admiration to the immensely courageous women who live in it and yet fight it, we remind you that women are strong and that we support you in any dismantling and rebuilding that makes this world a better, safer and more fair place for us, women.

What do you love about the Internet? The Internet is one of the greatest driving forces to economies, supporting key aspects in societies like education, business, and cultural diversification just to name a few. As such, access to the Internet is fundamental to furthering progress, fostering new growth in technologies and innovation as well as supporting communities in solving their own unique challenges.

The Internet Society has taken great strides in promoting the greater vision of equality in access to opportunities and enhancing competitiveness of developing communities in the global economy and | am glad to be part of that dream. Be intentional. Be present. Be an ally every day. Not just on March 8. And not just in March.

#IWD2023

If we — as a society and as an industry — truly want to support women, then invest in them with your resources and network. Fund them if you believe in their vision. Sponsor them so they can have access to more people. Lift up their voices *every day*, not just today. Showcase their work throughout the year, not just March. And don't dig up their profile pictures just for the once-a-year "women in fintech" panel.

By 2025, we want to make significant progress towards a gender-equal Europe.

We aim at achieving gender balance in decision-making and in politics, for which we doubled down our efforts to increase women’s representation.

When it comes to representation, we lead by example.

Meet our spokeswomen: the official voice of the 🇪🇺 Commission with the media, with a frontline role in the decision-making process.

These strong women are an example of how the EU pushes forward gender equality.

#IWD2023

EU Commission's spokeswomen on their biggest achievements:

Dana Spinant: "I'm proud of our first trip to Kyiv just a few weeks after the invasion. It was very important to be there and to communicate to Ukrainian people that we are with them and that we will stand with them until the end as long as necessary."

Arianna Podestà: "There are several achievements I'm proud of. If I had to pick one, it would be the Digital Markets Act, which are the rules we have recently adopted in order to make sure the digital markets remain fair, open and contestable to the benefits of all citizens."

Nabila Massrali: "We do not shy away from condemning the growing oppression and restrictions on women's rights that we are witnessing worldwide."

Sonya Gospodinova: "I could highlight two. I'm extremely proud to be the spokesperson for the Erasmus plus program. I was an Erasmus student and had an amazing, life-changing academic year! I'm super proud to have worked from the beginning until the end on the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan."

Anitta Hipper: "We have so many achievements! Because I'm not on my own, I work together with a fabulous team. If I were to pick just one, it would be our support for Ukraine. I was part alongside with Commission experts in the negotiation team on the visa-free regime for Ukraine. That was an important achievement that I could contribute with my work both on the level of expertise and communication to help those fleeing Putin's bombs."

A @WorldBank project has built 1,279 reservoirs & 30,686 rainwater harvesting cisterns across #Yemen.

In this water-scarce country, these systems address thirst & disease & protect rural women & girls who carry the burden of fetching water.
