In a new study our #MPIM_Scientists Thomas Kleinen and Victor Brovkin, together with Sergey Gromov and Benedikt Steil of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry simulated for the first time the evolution of #climate and methane for the entire period from the last #IceAge to today. In their groundbreaking study, they were able to show that the changes in #methane concentration since the last ice age were caused primarily by tropical wetlands.

Photo of a grey boulder split in two on boggy ground, surrounded by light-brown marsh grasses. The boulder is about 1.5 metres high and 2 metres across, and has abundant patches of lichen and moss. The cleft is about 0.5 metres wide at the top, tapering closer towards the ground but with enough soil along the groove for grasses and a small conifer to grow in the shadow there. Behind it are stretches of tall conifers and a wind turbine under an overcast sky.

At least five times in its history, #Earth froze over, locked in the grip of an #iceage. #Scientists sometimes refer to these periods as “Snowball Earth.” The popular idea is that everything was covered with #ice, making #life difficult, if not impossible. But, there’s new evidence that during at least one of these icy periods, parts of Earth’s surface could have been more like a giant mushy ball of slush.

"Since the preindustrial times of the mid-1800s, Earth’s #climate has warmed by about 1.2 C (2.2°F). That may seem like a trifling amount until one considers the difference in global temperature today compared to the last #IceAge.

The average global temperature difference between then and now is about 6 C (11°F), or what we can call one “ice age unit.” By that definition, people have already warmed the Earth by 20% of an Ice Age unit."

Children of the Ice Age

"For more than 200 years, children have been neglected by archaeologists. It was part of a disciplinary bias towards adult men in archaeological interpretations. This began to change in the 1970s and ’80s with the rise of feminist archaeology and the archaeology of gender..." cgc373 posted Aeon Magazine's article by April Nowell.

The latest ice age left it's shore laying about in the Swedish mountainous parts. The Swedish term is like "clatterstonefield" directly translated to English. Very hard going here. Due to the pressure of 1km+ of ice, the land is still rising around 0.01m or less per year leaving old shorelines in the woods. Vegetation can't grow, and this is what you may find in or near the lower mountain ridge close to Norway. One tends to avoid them! Boulders as far as you can see.

"...we also need to consider our modern assumptions about children. Why do we imagine them as ‘naive’ figures ‘free of responsibility’? Why do we assume that children couldn’t contribute meaningfully to society?

...A growing body of ethnographic and archaeological research is revealing the ways these forgotten figures have always contributed to the welfare of their communities and themselves."

... and going *big* for #waterfallWednesday - the colossal Dry Falls in central #Washington.

From Wikipedia: "catastrophic flooding channelled water at 105 km/h through the Upper Grand Coulee and over this 120m rock face at the end of the last glaciation. It is estimated that the falls were five times the width of Niagara Falls, with ten times the flow of all the current rivers in the world combined."

Life goal: get the Missoula Floods going again.

Enormous, wide, scalloped cliffs over 100m high, exposing layers of basalt - with small lakes of water at the base, reflecting the cliffs. A dry, yellow-brown landscape - part of the erosion features produced by catastrophic, repeated floods in the last ice age.

"A primitive writing system used by ice age hunter-gatherers appears to have been uncovered by an amateur #archaeologist, who concluded that the 20,000-year-old markings were a form of lunar #calendar...By using the birth cycles of equivalent animals today as a reference point... the number of marks associated with #IceAge animals were a record, by #lunar month, of when they were mating...the inclusion of a “Y” sign, ... meant “giving birth”."

It is fascinating that there are no human finds or evidence of humans in Wales between the time of Paviland and Long Hole Cave until 10000 years later. TEN THOUSAND! An unfathomable amount of time!

Cathole Cave, also on Gower, is a fantastic example.

Stone points were discovered there and dated to around 26000BC, but the art drawn on the rocks dates to 14500BC.

Palaeolithic settlers lived there, then over 11000 years later, people returned!

Today, we leave behind the #Palaeolithic, with its caves, rudimentary stone tools and remains of animals long extinct from #Wales.

The last Ice Age is an important time in Wales. Humans abandoned Wales.

However, this was the time when the land was shaped. Between 27000 and 17000 years ago, most of Wales was covered in ice.

In this 10,000 year span, Eryri (Snowdonia) was carved and Wales's other mountain ranges were shaped!
