I have today worn my #BigCoat to work for the first time this year. Formerly known as my #Iceland coat, it’s absolutely cold enough to wear it here #today.

It’s down and padded and waterproof and lined with something like those emergency blankets you see marathons finishers wearing.

I was sweating like a paedophile in a playground all the way to work!

Despite being monstrous giants, the trolls of Icelandic folklore possess one major weakness: sunlight turns them to stone. Many of the large rock formations that can be seen across Iceland are said to actually be petrified trolls. #FolkloreSunday

"Bid me discourse, I will enchant thine ear,
Or, like a fairy, trip upon the green,
Or, like a nymph, with long dishevell'd hair,

Love is a spirit all compact of fire,
Not gross to sink, but light, and will aspire."

A starry sky, devoid of clouds. Across the entire photo are stripes and ripples of bright green aurora, some with spikes pointing upward, some with a fork like a snake's tongue or a candle flame. The horizon is very low and is simply a dark block at the bottom of the shot but, in one place, the aurora is disappearing behind the hillside and a few silhouetted features can be seen - a power transmission tower, a few bare trees - which lend it scale.

Deserted Valley

This is Flateyjardalur in north-eastern #Iceland. Over the years, all the farms in this valley have gradually been abandoned until nobody lives here, except seasonal shepherds and the Arctic foxes.

The stillness and silence were total, not even the sound of the wind, just the rhythm of my own heart.

@photography #DailyPhoto #photography #WeatherPhotography #LandscapePhotography #Landscape

Please read the ALT tag for more...

A long, snow-covered valley with two rivers running through it. The snow and ice are completely untrodden. Points of dark rock are showing through the perfect snow where the wind has lifted it away. The viewpoint is a rocky ridge with the edge just in front of us, the valley below and then the opposite hillside. In the distance are higher mountain ridges, also snow-covered, shining in the sun as if made of white silk. The light is from behind and to the right of the viewer, and the sky is broken snowclouds with large patches of blue.

Five years ago today we were spending the first full day of a long weekend in Iceland, having flown up the day before. Reykjavík was cold in December - who knew? - and the scenery around the port and north to the snowy, volcanic range of Esja not far from our hotel was both unwelcoming and utterly beautiful. This was our second time visiting Iceland but the first staying in the capital. It's our favourite European country.

#Reykjavík #Iceland #Travel #Photography #TravelPhotography #Esja

It's a very cold day with layers of icy clouds in the sky and a great roll of white clouds in the distance appearing to form a blanket resting just above a low, wide mountain range covered in snow and ice and with dark rock peaking out of sheltered spots down its steep edges. In the foreground, across a section of tarmac, we can see a fishing port complete with warehouses and many vessels docked. Cars are parked in front but there's no sign of life. It feels quiet, like everyone's inside somewhere warm away from the bite in the air and the unwelcoming port.

The weirdest thing about everything that has happened in connection with the #Earthquakes around, and magma movement below, #Grindavík is how slowly the ground moves.

It has been three weeks since the worst round of quakes and the magma doesn't appear to be rising anymore. I had envisioned the effects to be near instantaneous but I was thinking about it wrong.

The quakes and magma shift the rock but the soil moves on a delay. So we are still seeing sinkholes forming.

For #WaterfallWednesday here's Geitafoss in northern Iceland. If you ever visit the wider and higher Goðafoss then this is its smaller sibling just a little bit downstream and before you reach the bridges over the Skjálfandafljót river.

This was taken in 2022 while we were in nearby Akureyri for the day.

#Iceland #Geitafoss #Skjálfandafljót #Goðafoss #Waterfall #Nature #LandscapePhotography #Travel #TravelPhotography #Photography #Akureyri

We're on one side of a wide river thundering over a waterfall of several metres. The water is grey-green above the drop, becoming a boiling white froth as it hits rocks and falls into the fast-flowing torrent below. A little bit of spray rises from the surface. In the foreground is a grassy ledge on which we're standing with some large boulders of dark, volcanic rock leading away from us to the right and obscuring the view of the source of the river. On the other side of the waterfall and its turbulent flow the landscape is one of more volcanic rocks along the water's edge, rising to grassy, rolling hills and flats. There are a few paths along the top, likely mirroring those on this side, and there are small figures and vehicles parked in the distance; other viewers of this magnificent spectacle. The sky has thin sheets of cloud and blue patches. There's a feeling of exposure here on the raised edge by the water and with such a distant view over the green land, and you can almost hear the roar of the waterfall just in front and feel bits of spray on your face.

Fancy A Swim?

For #WaterfallWednesday this week -
This is gorgeous Aldeyjarfoss in February, the beautiful turquoise waters of river Skjálfandafljót frozen almost to a standstill. The drop of 20 metres into a turbulent, icy pool is perfectly offset by the surrounding black basalt columns.

A snow scene, with a waterfall at the centre. The rocks around the falls are icy and snow-covered. On either side of the lovely hosepipe of falling water are the vertical teeth of black basalt columns, exaggerated by white ice which has formed between them. The water is an exquisite shade of turquoise blue, with ripples of white foam on the surface.

"I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow

Summer: Warm, moist winds from the southern ocean conflict with the steep, cold mountains and make enormous stacked lenticular clouds around the coast.

A wide blue sky with blue sea below, a foreground of green grassland and a misty distant cape of mountains jutting into the water. Above the mountain peaks is a strange, long cloud which seems unnaturally dense, it has no detail other than smooth sides and a dark underside. It stretches across towards the viewer and almost overhead. Some smaller clouds are visible below it and there are more unusual shapes in the clouds to its right. It looks almost like a spaceship hovering above the coast.

Crepuscular rays are streaming from the top right of the shot, strong beams are striking rocks on the right but, at the left centre, a single strong sunbeam is hitting the icy surface of the glacier like a spotlight.

We continue to monitor the situation around #Grindavik in #Iceland. A member of the @Vivaldi team evacuated with his family. It is a stressful situation for everyone from Grindavík and my thoughts are with them all. It is not easy for a town to have to evacuate like that. Everyone is hoping for the best, but it does not look like people will be able to return to their homes anytime soon. In fact, the expectation is that people will not be able to be home for Christmas.

There has not been a volcanic eruption so far, but there has been a lot of damage from all the earthquakes and from cracks and holes in the ground and the whole area is not considered safe.

When I read stories about the Reykjanes peninsula shifting back into an active volcanic phase after ~800 years of quiescence, I always think about how *much* of #Iceland's population lives on or near the Reykjanes Peninsula.

Short thread: #geology #volcano

Annotated map of Reykjanes Peninsula. Underlying map shows volcanic centers as yellow circles, together with lines showing tectonic fractures (black) and volcanic fissures (red). Red circles show approximate locations of eruptions of Fagradalsfjall between 2021 and 2023, and the current unrest near Grindavik. A black circle marks the position of the Svartsengi geothermal plant. According to geology professor Shawn Willsey, in Grindavik today, they detected SO2 - a volcanic gas.

It doesn’t mean the eruption’s imminent, especially since the most violent of the magma intrusive processes (e.g., the earthquakes and ground cracks) along the dike have subsided, so it’s not pushing upward so forcefully. But at this point, it is believed that the magma’s maybe 1/2-mile beneath the surface.

I think there are many people who imagine that flowing lava is the most dangerous part of a #VolcanicEruption but since gas is invisible it is often the thing which kills people. About an hour the few people who were in #Grindavík (mostly those trying to save valuables or minimize potential damage) had to leave because gas detectors measured high levels if sulfur dioxide in the air. The eruption is pending but we have seen how powerful science and technology are at preventing harm.

It had been a miserable day in terms of weather. Drizzly rain and strong winds had done their best to spoil our tour of Kárahnjúkavirkjun but, with the sun regularly breaking through, we saw dozens of rainbows that day.

This was one of the most impressive. After walking halfway across the gravel dam I turned my back to the rain, and was met by this gorgeous sight over Hafrahvammagljúfur (𝙃𝙖𝙛𝙛𝙧𝙖-𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘢-𝘨𝘭𝘺𝘰𝘰-𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘳) canyon.

The photo is a landscape of a dry brown uneven surface with a murky grey sky above. In the middle distance are brown hills and mountains, devoid of vegetation, looking dry and split. Running from bottom centre to the middle of the shot is a wide zigzag canyon like a crack in the earth, steep sided and jagged. A small river can be seen on the canyon floor, a long way below. A shadow is being cast by the structure the viewer is standing on and, rising from the edge of the shadow, a perfect strong rainbow is arcing upwards to the centre top of the shot, fading slightly as it rises.
