For the past 60 days, I have been intensively studying the Italian language. I want to learn Italian in order to better serve our ASL Opera project since 50% of the most popular operas were written in Italian (25% were written in German, and 15% were written in French). I understand modern Italian isn’t the same as “original opera Italian” — but learning something new only helps deepen the appreciation of the comprehension of the context of the original aesthetic. In this article, I will share with you some of the treasures, and techniques, I have been using to apply a greater understanding to my Italian learning.

Learning a new language can be a challenge. When I first met my beloved Janna more than 35 years ago, one condition of our dating was that I learn her language — American Sign Language. Since that time, Janna — who happens to be Deaf — and I have written ASL books, performed together, and taught ASL together many times!

As ASL teachers, Janna and I believe in total immersion, and we also believe that in our real lives and in our classrooms. No English! No PSE! Just use pure ASL. You’ll learn, and sustain, a language better and faster that way.

I have done my best to apply that immersion thinking to my Italian learning. Complete and total immersion whenever possible. Some believe adults have a harder time learning a new language than a child, but I disagree. Adults know how to make associations with existing grammar, and syntax, and that gives adults the power of leveling up faster than our infant contemporary language learners!

Here is my Italian learning plan. When I’m not directly studying in my Apps, I am using the following methods to provide immersion as often as possible.

1. TV. Comcast offers two Italian channels for an extra monthly fee. They also offer other foreign language channels like German and French!
2. Radio App — talk and music. The iPhone store is filled with Italian streaming Apps. You can also stream directly from the internet.
3. iPhone Language. I changed the language on my iPhone and iPad from English to Italian. Sure, it’s a little scary, but I have Janna’s English iPhone to help me out if I get stuck. I also changed the time to a 24-hour clock.
4. Keyboard language on phones and computers. I use an Italian keyboard whenever I can. That’s my new default. Force it to learn it!
5. Apple Watch. I changed the language on my Apple Watch to Italian. Force it to learn it!
6. Podcasts. Listening to podcasts can also really help you learn Italian fast.
7. Music. Singing along is a great, modern, way to learn a musical language to a beat. Melody sharing makes the learning less traditional, and more exciting!
8. TV shows. YouTube has a lot of Italian learning shows. They are helpful! Episodic television is also a wonderful way to add familiar context to the Italian overdubbing.
9. Movies. Netflix has Italian content with English captions.
10. CiborTV. This is a box you buy, like an Apple TV, that provides subscription content for Italian television channels. CiborTV is my greatest secret weapon for ongoing daily passive immersion.

One of the biggest blockades to learning Italian is the four years I spent learning Spanish 45 years ago. When I “think” in my target language of Italian, the dark memory of the Spanish word first creeps to mind. I never became fluent in Spanish! I regret not studying harder all those years ago. Senorita Byrd: “I apologize for not being a more apt student!”

For my Italian study, I subscribe to several Italian language newspapers, but my main weapon in learning is my Apps. Here is a review — on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best — of the Italian language learning Apps I use every day. I study a minimum of 90 minutes a day using these Apps. I have, probably 25 Apps in total, but these particular Apps provide a lifetime subscription: Buy once, learn forever! That, to me, is important in learning a new language, because you will always, for your lifetime, be working on learning the language. Apps that charge only a monthly, or a yearly fee, are not included in this review.

Babbel (3/10)
Babbel does a lot of television advertising. Their learning quit on me when a lesson I was studying stopped working. The problem was repeatable. I reported to Babbel the trouble I was having, along with steps to reproduce the bug, and screenshots — you can’t move on until you finish a lesson, and I was forever stuck on a blank screen for Lesson 7 — and Babbel support brushed me off! They told me to restart my browser. I stopped right there and gave up on Babbel. That is the danger of paying once with access forever. If you can’t access the lessons, there is no forever — and the company, after being paid, has zero incentive to keep you actively learning! There are also no study guides you can print out for each lesson to help you memorize the work. The problem was 100% confirmed on the Babbel side, and they did not care.

LingoDeer (5/10)
LingoDeer sells itself as an Asian language learning App, but they do offer a few other languages, like Italian. So far, their strict learning style is often effective. Their printable notes are comprehensive and helpful. The teaching style is raw, though. I call LingoDeer the “meaner sister of Duolingo.” The early lessons were super difficult and unforgiving, now the later lessons are a little more relaxed and fun to “play.”

Rosetta Stone (4/10)
Rosetta Stone is the old dude in the room and uses a visual learning approach. There are no printable lessons. You look at images and divine vocabulary and grammar all on your own. Alone, Rosetta Stone would not be a great way to learn a language, but adding it to the ganglia of other learning tools I have employed, it’s a definite winner in making one “think different” in real time. Their spoken language recognition engine is pitiful. It does not work. I have, unfortunately, turned off its voice feature after week 6.

Lingopie (8/10)
Lingopie is super interesting and immersive. They provide videos with both English and Italian captions. You can turn off the captions if you don’t want to see them. If you don’t know a word, you click on it, and that word gets defined for you and added to your Pop Quiz queue. There’s also a Netflix browser plugin that will “Lingopie” Italian content on Netflix that will help you learn even faster. Lingopie will only get better with time!

Clozemaster (10/10)
Clozemaster is my favorite learning tool — it thinks, and processes information, just as I do — and that’s a rare thing to find in the real world! Designed like a retro-style 80s video game, Clozemaster helps you quickly close in on your target language goals. ChatGPT-4 explains the idea behind “cloze” learning:

A “cloze” test is used in language learning and pedagogy to assess an individual’s comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills. It is a valuable tool for both educators and students in various language learning contexts.
In a cloze test, certain words or phrases within a text are systematically removed and replaced with blanks. The learner is then asked to fill in the blanks with appropriate words or phrases to complete the sentences. The omitted words are usually chosen based on specific criteria, such as every nth word or specific grammatical structures.
Here’s how the cloze method is applied in language learning:
1. **Assessment of Vocabulary and Grammar**: By strategically removing certain words or phrases, teachers can assess a student’s grasp of vocabulary and grammatical structures. For example, removing verbs can test understanding of verb tenses.

Drops (9/10)
Drops was a magnificent surprise. Drops focuses on helping you learn Italian vocabulary in just 5 minutes a day. You can study for a longer period of time if you pay. Drops is fun to use, beautiful to look at, and a wonder at teaching. It’s just fun! I start my day with Drops to give myself a boost of confidence, and joy, before the harder work of learning begins.

Memrise (6/10)
Memrise is a strange beast. I’m not completely certain I understand what it is or what the goals are of the App. You sometimes get video clips of phrases — some are just silly, and I skip them — which you then get tested on in multiple choice boxes. They also provide a strange “video” conversation with people talking to themselves — like a TikTok story — that I find more annoying than engaging. Memrise does have a ChatGPT-3 dialogue interaction that can be fun, but even that feels just a little old and limited.

edX (1/10)
I was super excited to take the Italian lessons on edX, but the teaching is really old — the expert Italian language folks on Reddit told me many of the words being taught on edX were no longer colloquial, and they urged me to dump the lessons, and I did. The learning interface feels like a 1990s website project gone wrong. There was so much unlimited promise here that just failed to deliver.

Anki (3/10)
People either seem to love Anki flashcards or they hate them. I’m sort of in the middle. I get how Anki can be helpful for repetition in learning, but the interface is super ugly, and many of the “study decks” for download don’t appear to be well-formatted. The idea is right, but the execution feels stilted and raw.

That’s my review of my “lifelong learning Italian Apps” with a lifetime subscription. I look forward to learning Italian. My goal is to be at least B2 certified and I’m currently a rising A1. Yes, I have a long way to go, but that’s okay. Good things take time, and fluency demands dedication. I know I have at least one of both right now.

I'm doing alright, most of my cards are mature in this deck so I need to keep on top of just adding new stuff.

In my archive deck (it has cards from all sorts of decks), I currently have 2,367 cards that have been retired from spanish studies. I'll check back on how many I have overall after today.

Even though anki feels like a slog, I have some good news.
All of my immersion has been free flow today. I decided to watch Betty en NY and it's been easy enough for me to follow. Here and there I notice some words I don't know but I've been able to follow along.

The last time I watched it was when I was just starting out with Spanish and I couldn't understand anything! I had to parse every single word but now I can catch the gist of most things, it's easier than any of the other shows I have watched so far. Even easier than La Casa de Los Flores.

There are 123 episodes and I just finished episode 9. I wonder if I would have the patience to watch all of the episodes, I'm not sure but now I know what I can watch if I want some free flow time without being completely overwhelmed. #LanguageLearning #langtoot #Refold #immersion #LanguageImmersion

I've almsot done 71 hours immersion based study so far (since tracking from the end of last month) and I'm having a blast. I've returned to something that used to be hard for me to read and now it's a lot easier than it was before.

I think I'm going to do a similar experiment to the spiderman one but with TED talks. It's probably easier for me to digest because they're a lot shorter but focused on topics I'm interested in. I will shuffle these amongst the shows I'm watching and see if any of it helps at all.

I've looked for 10 TED talks that I will watch atleast 10 times.
The first one was great and I'm glad I chose it because it will help me learn to speak a little more about my identity.

@Jerralyn Franzic @Han Held My #avatars always have a home somewhere on their home grids. Homes come with a lot of advantages.

One is that you can log out and back in again somewhere private instead of somewhere in public.

Another one is that you've got somewhere to retreat when you want to work on outfits. Sandboxes aren't terribly good for that.

And a home makes #immersion easier for those for whom #OpenSim isn't "just a bunch of pixels" and a 3-D chat app. You can start and end all your excursions at home instead of your avatar rezzing somewhere in public where you have to figure out how your avatar could possibly have gotten there.

By the way, that's one reason why I don't have avatars on countless grids. Not only would they all need a substantial amount of outfits, but they'd all need a home.

In #OpenSimulator, life isn't too easy for individualists. There isn't exactly much respect or tolerance for them. At best, #individualism is taken for cluelessness, for not knowing how to conform to "standards"; at worst, it's openly attacked.

I'm wondering if it's as bad in #SecondLife.

One example is if you don't deck out your avatar in the way that "everyone else" does, not in any way you're expected to. Male avatars have to be badass, female avatars have to be sexy, and in #OpenSim, both have to consist entirely of illegal content. And yes, the black-leather-clad rocker style is still big in OpenSim whereas it has been displaced by business suits in Second Life years ago. I think the currently only accepted male style in Second Life, and the only one for which clothes are being made, is the beach slacker style.

If your avatar doesn't conform to such standards, people are quick to believe that either you don't know the cool stuff (in which case they may push it upon you without asking you), or you don't know where to get it (although it's much harder to get what you're wearing), or you don't know how to wear the cool stuff (in which case they may try to give you lessons without asking you).

Many other examples come from preferring #immersion over convenience, something else that "literally nobody" does.

If you want to go to the party, and you want to walk from somewhere where you can't be seen teleporting or somewhere where you'd arrive if this was real life (railway station, bus stop, harbour pier...), it's likely that someone will offer you a teleport right slap-bang into the middle of the crowded dance floor. It's a nice gesture at this point. But if you keep walking, they'll send you another teleport offer instead of checking the map for where you are. If you still don't teleport, they may either send you yet another teleport offer or ask why you don't simply teleport.

If they didn't ask, and you arrive after a few minutes of walking, they may assume that you're simply too dumb to teleport.

When the event is over, you walk away from it instead of teleporting away or logging out right from the dance floor. This may not seem dumb, but it does seem weird.

There are many other things where you may irritate the "it ain't real, it's just pixels" convenience-over-immersion majority that basically treats #VirtualWorlds like fancy chat rooms. For example, if you deliberately define which clothes you've taken with you to where you are, if any, instead of just having all clothes in your inventory at hand.

Or if you refuse to change into another outfit in front of everyone. Or if you undress and dress step-by-step, maybe even using purpose-made outfits for that because you sometimes have to put something else on while taking something off. You're being weird because "everyone" would just change everything at once.

Or if you insist in changing your swimwear after going for a swim because the beach you're on is not a (sub)tropical one, and what you're wearing won't dry on your body within two minutes.

Or if you actually want to do on a beach what you'd do on real-life beaches. Go swimming, for example, or just take a sunbath. Virtual beaches are either sex spots or party locations or merely decorational, full stop.

Or if you accidentally end up in a body of water, and you do as if your clothes are wet now.

Or even if you dress for the occasion and situation. If you refuse to wear a black leather jacket on a (sub)tropical beach on a sunny day. That is, if you have more than two or three different outfits as a male avatar.

I mean, I've seen people attend under-water, mermaid-themed parties in their everyday streetwear, and I guess at least some of them were wondering what's wrong with those who actually turned their avatars into merpeople or at least had put on diving gear for the event. And I'm not convinced that none of them knew where the party would take place.

Or if you refuse to sit down on the line dance floor like "everyone else" and, in the rare absence of a Clubmaster, make use of a dance HUD. Even worse, if you insist in dances that fit the music. If you don't have anything fitting, you don't dance.

Or generally, if your avatar is a character. With a custom, fictional backstory even. And not just a profile pic in a 3-D chat app.

Virtual worlds being treated as "just pixels" and a fancy chat UI is also why some sim builders wonder why they even take it upon themselves to build beautiful and, most of all, immersive places. It doesn't seem worth it. At most, people teleport in, cam around for a few minutes, grab some stoff and teleport out again. And if they can't pick up everything on your sim as freebies, they'll attack you for it, because what else should a sim that isn't an event location be good for?

After all, if someone wants to do anything else in-world than party, chat with other real-life people through their avatars, hoard freebies or maybe have virtual sex, something must be seriously wrong with them.

In this regard, I must say I can consider myself lucky to know the right people. People who know what I'm doing how and why I'm doing it that way, and who respect it.

Und da hilft es den Spielenden recht wenig, wenn sie nie #immersion haben, weil sie immer mit Regeln beschäftigt sind. Regeln sind wichtig, aber für mich nur ein Mittel, um die #Atmosphäre und das #Setting in „geordneten Bahnen“ rüberzubringen. Wenn sie das nicht schaffen oder gar im Weg stehen, sind sie unnütz.

In this entry, I will try to describe how our reality is, in the hopes that our reality can be easily understood.

1. Our universe is called the Fediverse.

2. There is what we call #DarkMatter, it glues everything together preventing the universe from being torn apart. This dark matter is everywhere, and it is through this that communications across the universe is possible, we call this technology #ActivityPub.

3. There are countless of galaxies, some still being born, some already known, like: #Friendica #Calckey #Hubzilla #Rebased #Streams #Pixelfed #Bookwyrm #FunkWhale #PeerTube #WriteAs #Lemmy #GoToSocial and #Mastodon.

4. Each galaxy contains different worlds. Some are flat, some round, some a generational ship, and some wayward worlds dubbed #WanderingEarth. These are the worlds that I've visited so far:

* c.im - the people here believes the world is round, because of this unusual belief, they can say things up to 5,000 characters. This world is in the Mastodon galaxy, where many of the other worlds are flat 500 characters.

* hashi.icu - this world is a generational ship. They travel to different worlds, creating bridges, their motto: ICU (you know, I See You). Oh, be warned, they speak up to 300,000 characters! After all, they have plenty of stories to tell.

* c.wtf - this world was recently founded in the Rebased galaxy. Like their origin world, c.im, they can speak up to 5,000 characters.

* p.lu - the people of c.im are truly explorers. They discovered the PeerTube galaxy and were amazed by the technology there: hosting videos through the peer-to-peer protocol! They immediately established a colony in one of the worlds in the PeerTube galaxy.

* i.calckey.cloud - this is the primary world of the Calckey galaxy, and it is a world filled with clouds. Some think that it means its people are high, well, they are high, they live on (or in?) the clouds after all! However, its people are great calculators, I mean, at calculation. Did I not mention they can speak up to 3,000 characters?

* zotum.net - a “Wandering Earth” in the Hubzilla galaxy. This world is one of the oldest. Rumour has it that it used to be located in the Friendica galaxy. A wandering earth indeed!

Those are only a few of the worlds I have seen for myself. But, there is something far larger than this universe.

You see, my dear reader, the Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams, and #SocialHome galaxies developed technology to communicate with another universe. This universe is called #TheFederation and their communication technology, also based on dark matter, is called #diaspora.

That's not all. It was also discovered that there is another universe. The people in this universe calls it #Jabber and their dark matter based communication technology is called #XMPP. The technology to commmunicate with them is still in experimental stages, only few worlds in the fediverse are brave enough to test this technology.

My tip, if you are a migrant, find any world and start there. Understand the basics of our universe. You can always move to a new world with your social connections, or start all over again, with a fresh identity if you like.

There is this thing called #Twitter, and most migrants are coming from there. It is probably a universe, though based on whispers, it is a #LostWorld floating between universes, in total darkness. I even heard one migrant comment that that world is about to implode.

Note: If you are a citizen of the fediverse, please welcome and guide everyone in this #TwitterMigration. They are looking for a new home, and our universe can be confusing for them. If whispers are to be believed, Twitter is but a single world, and ours is a universe.

Did my first customer meeting that was entirely in German 🇩🇪!

Got a surprised reaction when I busted out my limited spoken German at the start. I took a back seat, but followed much of it and provided links and details in English to our side in chat.

I can't say I understood every word, but I got the gist and it wasn't as hard to follow as I'd expected.

Not having to speak much made it easier to just focus on what was being said, a *huge* bonus.
