The garment workers strike began September 27, 1909, in response to abysmal wages and safety conditions. The majority of striking workers were immigrant women, mostly Yiddish-speaking Jews (75%) and Italians (10%), and mostly under the age of 20. Five women died in the strike, which the union won, signing contracts with 339 manufacturing firms. However, 13 firms, including Triangle Shirtwaist Company, never settled. One of the demands had been for adequate fire escapes and for open doors to the streets for emergencies. In 1911, 146 girls and women were killed in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire.

People ask me what I care about US politics so much as opposed to the (terrible) politics of my home country. The answer is simple - I live here, I pay my taxes here, I live in this country and yes, I love this country. My wife and I chose to leave our home country after nearly 30 years of living in it and starting completely anew in the US. We got our green cards pretty fast and we're actually going to apply to US citizenship pretty soon. This is where our daughter was born and where we chose to raise her. We came to immigrate and to be/become a part of this country. I wish more people in the US understood just how much immigrants really look up and love this country. I've been hearing too many stupid takes on immigration and immigrants lately...
Wishing more critiques of the #US and specific US systems would start from or at least acknowledge the genocidal foundations of the entire project. For example, current genocidal policies towards #Trans people and #Immigrants rely on some of the same institutions that have been deployed against #Native people since the founding of the country. Specifically, #CPS being used to terrorize families with trans kids in Texas is an institution that's continuous from the institutions that stole generations of children from Native families. Likewise, a medical establishment in which and doctors are willing to perform non-consensual hysterectomies on immigrant women has done the same (and by all accounts continues to do so to some degree) to Natives.
Killing off "undesirables" starts with killing Native Americans to make room for settlers, and recognizing the through-lines from there to the present day is both rhetorically and strategically helpful. This is especially true in light of the fact that the US' original genocide is both ongoing, and has not fully succeeded in it's eliminationist goals. Understanding how Natives have survived within a state that wants them dead, and what they're doing to continue their resistance to that in multiple ways is a useful thing to pursue as American #fascism expands its targets and tactics.

While I almost never agree with Jeff Jacoby in this case I very much do - although mostly for a different set of reasons. The level of documentation required for Real ID creates even more barriers for folks who are already marginalized - people who have #housing instability, #immigrants, those returning from #incarceration. It also flies against our recent efforts in MA to make drivers licenses available to undocumented immigrants. It deepens inequities.

Yes, they do exist and some haven’t seen their families in ages. 😢 The sacrifices and difficult decisions they made and have to make are truly heartbreaking 💔. Some are being trafficked. Some are even scared to post things on any SM platforms thinking that they might get caught. Some found the courage and post beautiful things to show some support for their country and its people. #Fediverse would be a safe place for them.💗
