Now I have decided to take a few pictures at #OSFest2023. Which means in a 3-D #VirtualWorld.

Which, in turn, means very long #ImageDescriptions because there's nothing in these pictures that anyone is familiar with. You think 1,500 characters are long? You're cute.

I've been working on it for about an hour. I'm past the 4,000-character mark. Already now, that's too much not only for #Mastodon, but also for #Misskey and default-settings #Firefish. It's way too much for #AltText almost everywhere in the #Fediverse. And I've barely scratched the surface, also because explaining the very setting took more than 3,000 characters already.

Now I'm facing the first challenge. There are four pictures of nebulae. I'll have to identify three of them to be sufficiently informative for curious users, and then I'll have to describe all four of them in all their details for #Blind or #VisuallyImpaired users. And this is what people are the most likely to be familiar with. There are also more than a dozen different spaceships, a space statiion and whatnot.

The things you do for #Accessibility and #Inclusion and to make your pictures understandable for everyone.

#Documentary #sources share stories from #LGBTQ #survivors in #WWII #Germany, like #HeinzHeger, #TheMenWithThePinkTriangle (London: GMP, 1986), originally #DieMännermitdemRosaWinkle (Hamburg, 1972).

The 2 images show excerpts detailing the #Nazi #treatment of #TransWomen, #TransMen, #Lesbians, #GayMen, and #Crossdressers. The second image offers a #timeline leading to the #LGBTQ #inclusion in the #Nazi #FinalSolution.

The Nazis made no distinction between trans women, gay men and cross-dressers: all were made to wear the pink triangle and sent to camps like Dachau, Auschwitz and Sachsenhausen, while trans men, classed as lesbians, were marked by the same black "antisocial" triangle as communists and intellectuals. People with pink triangles were singled out for extreme brutality by both the Nazis and other inmates. They were segregated into "queer blocks" and given the deadliest work assignments. For those with pink or black triangles, death arrived not by extermination in gas chambers but by so-called indirect mass annihilation, a combination of "terror work," induced starvation and pitiless punishment. Their lives were ended by a few weeks of deliberately prolonged torture, justified by the Nazis' decision that they were not "real women" or "real men." 32

- 32 Heinz Heger, The Men With The Pink Triangle (London: GMP, 1986). First published as Die Männer mit dem Rosa Winkle (Hamburg: Merlin-Verlag, 1972)
When Hitler seized power, all active gay organizations in Germany were declared illegal. Kurt Hiller, whom Magnus Hirschfeld had named as the head of his Scientific-Humanitarian Committee, was sent to the concentration camp in Oranienburg, from which he was released nine months later for unknown reasons. Until 1933, Roehm's brownshirts attacked gay bars throughout the country; many were closed down and the rest forced to operate illegally. At a meeting of municipal administration officials in Hamburg on November 13, 1933, for instance, the chief of police was ordered to pay particular attention to "transvestites, and to send them to concentration camps." In 1934, the Gestapo sent a letter ordering every police station in the country to draw up a list of "everyone who is homosexually active in any way.” In response, the Berlin police managed to draw up a list of approximately 30,000 homosexuals. In May 1935, the SS magazine Das Schwarze Korps demanded the death sentence for gays.

⚠️ CW – Suicide Prevention Month (TBI and Suicide)⚠️

September is National suicide prevention month and many members of the Invisible Disability Community are at high risk but, they're not alone. Individuals in the LGBTQIA community are "four times more likely" to make such an attempt for much the same reason as disabled individuals. The way they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. It is also the second leading cause of death for young people in the US between the ages of 18 and 25. "Native American communities experience higher rates of suicide compared to all other racial and ethnic groups in the US being the eighth leading cause of death…".

I thought this would be a good time to migrate and repost a piece I did on TBI "traumatic brain injury" and suicide to include these other at risk groups. What can you do if someone in your life is at risk? Spend some time with them, don't be judgmental, listen and love. If you see them being victimized or bullied, stand up and say something.

TBI - Traumatic Brain Injury and Suicide (originally posted Dec 27, 2022)

Why support is so important for those that live with TBI and Brain Injury. Between 2014 to 2017, the traumatic brain injury-linked death rate rose from 16.3 to 17.5 per 100,000 people.
There were 61,131 TBI-linked deaths in 2017 alone, and nearly half of these deaths were by suicide or homicide from 2015 to 2017. Last summer, a rash of suicides on the USS Washington raised questions about lack of support and services said to contribute to these deaths.

The links below present the dismal statistics and some ways to help prevent suicide among the population living with Brain Injuries and other marginalized people.

So many people -Drivers, children, shoppers, colleagues, things that may have been shrugged off are now tipping people over??

Shall we all encourage people to try #mindfulness #nature #self-care #inclusion ??🤔

I am in #nz I am interested to see if you feel this way too, wherever you are 🙏
Consider boosting & where you are, thank you 😊
How can we help?

Vivaldi – Setting an Example for Other Instances on Mastodon regarding Ableism:

I don't often have good things to say about many companies, however, in this case I have no choice but to commend the makers of #VivaldiBrowser in regard to their @Vivaldi instance, here on Mastodon.

Many users with disabilities, including myself, have often taken exception to most instance rules and the wording of the "Mastodon Server Covenant". I have had a piece on the back burner about this issue for quite some time, while examples of this problem continued to occur. Many disabled users have said they feel excluded by these rules, and therefore, left vulnerable to ableism. I personally have had certain instance administrators ignore blatant examples of ableism, seemingly on the technicality that, it does not violate their rules; or that of the Mastodon Server Covenant. To be clear, the instances I have accounts on (kolektiva.social and neurodifferent.me) do list ableism as an offense, and neurodifferent.me seems particularly protective of CERTAIN users in this way.

Servers on mastodon are required under the covenant to have:
"Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia.
Users must have the confidence that they are joining a safe space, free from white supremacy, anti-semitism and transphobia of other platforms."
There is absolutely no mention of ableism or any categorization that it would fall under. So, what about Vivaldi social?

I downloaded the Vivaldi browser last week and have not completely familiarized myself with it but, if you like the bells and whistles that go along with customizable browsers, you should like Vivaldi. It's equipped with many fantastic features for research and writing, as well. They have also recently taken steps to protect the privacy of it's browser users from prying Google eyes. After discovering that they had an instance here on Mastodon, I reached out to Vivaldi who graciously responded to me on several occasions. Their Mastodon instance even offers its users a blog space for writing. This was an exciting prospect for me.

When I looked up instance rules for Vivaldi social, I found the rules to be very similar to many instances and Mastodon's server covenant with a couple of additions including: xenophobia and casteism. Though xenophobia would seem to encompass ableism, I asked about the absence of the term on their server rules. Today, I received a response that speaks volumes about the character of those involved with Vivaldi and their Mastodon instance.

The correspondence said in part: "While for us it's common sense that any form of discrimination is not acceptable, it probably is best to spell it out more clearly. So, we've tweaked the wording of the server rules now." So what do Vivaldi's "tweaked" rules say?

"No discrimination of any form (incl. racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, casteism, ableism, etc.)".

I was pleasantly flabbergasted by this. Words like "fantabulous" and "bravissimo" are not a strong enough complement to this statement of equality and inclusion of the disability community by Vivaldi. Thank you so much for this consideration. Hopefully, other servers will follow the example you have set by adding one simple word to your server rules. You are truly a friend and ally to people with invisible disabilities throughout the world. There is no doubt in my mind about another statement on Vivaldi's server registration page: "EVERYONE IS WELCOME". Thank you again Vivaldi.

Since the #calendar was released, some people complained that we scheduled the mandatory #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion (#DEI) training for Tevet 13, simply because it's "25 December" on the Pope Gregory Calendar.

We cannot accommodate EVERYONE's #holidays.

What do Mark Zuckerberg, Prince William and Keanu Reeves have in common? 🤔

Apart from being white men, they are all colorblind.

September 6th (today) is #ColorBlindess Awareness Day! 👀🎨

Let's try not to make it harder for people with color deficiencies in our own designs. Use good #contrast in your #design, and think twice about #ColorCombinations.

Together we can work towards #inclusion and #accessibility.

Some more facts on colorblindness in the comments below ⬇️

💛 “When You Walk into that Valley”

Those of us who live in this Land of Inequality, this desert, know there are no black-and-white answers. There is just a long, hard, emotionally exhausting journey of self-evaluation, critical thinking, and cultural study.

Seems like time for a reminder to faculty and academic staff that you do NOT need to know a student's diagnosis. You just need to follow their approved accommodations. That's actually the bare minimum in terms of supporting disabled students.

In the US, you have no right to their diagnosis whatsoever. None. Don't ask. Don't bully them. Don't make them feel bad for needing accommodations. Don't be an ass.

"Historically-excluded groups of people are just that excluded. And they often don't feel comfortable stepping up or making that first connection.
If there's a mentorship program, somebody to be like "hey, why don't you try this?" or "hey, you would be great at this!" and just bring them along and include them." -- Rachell speaking at DjangoCon Us panel

"Despite years of advocacy, a scathing new report finds that fewer of the most popular new movies are featuring people with disabilities."
“When we look beyond gender and race/ethnicity, it is clear that #Hollywood’s problems with #inclusion are even more pronounced for the #LGBTQ+ and #disability communities,” said Stacy Smith, Dir. of the #Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and an author of the report.
