Chapel Hill, NC indie rockers Superchunk release their debut, self-titled LP
It’s a rough start to what will become a much more polished and focused sound as soon as their next album. This one here is noisy to the point where a lot of the guitar riffs are lost in the haze.
When I first heard this, I thought it was kind of a Dinosaur Jr. rip off. But man, the cool DJs at school LOVED this album.
I mean, it does have some great indie rock tracks, including the anti-anthem “Slack Motherfucker”, which was released the prior year as a single, and “Sick To Move” and “My Noise”.
I think what makes this record a true classic is that it basically started the wonderful label Merge Records.

The Rentals - “Waiting” (1995)
Such a fun album. I was way into this band at the time. I saw them on this tour. At the Cactus Club in San Jose! Anyone remember that place? So small and intimate. There were fewer people back then too.
The whole album is just wonderful synth-heavy power pop. Meant to be played loud!
Their follow up albums just don’t hold the same appeal to me. They’re more complex, better produced, etc. so I guess it’s just my preference for more simplistic musical styles that make it hard to get into any of their other records (with 2014’s “Lost In Alphaville” being their second best imho).
I'm not sure if it's appropriate to call it post-punk, but this 6-song EP, which includes the Guangzhou anthem The Capital Of Poland Is Shanghai (track 5), is definitely a masterpiece and one of the best ever.

Camper Van Beethoven release their debut album, “Telephone Free Landslide Victory”
Thanks to college radio, I heard this album as soon as it came out, and got it the week before school started. They quickly became my favorite band and I’d play this album all the time.
CVB blended all my favorite things into one band. A dead-pan humorous, punk rock attitude, expressed through a multitude of musical styles and influences, including bluegrass and ska (two of my favorites). They were excellent musicians too, playing amazing guitars and several other string instruments like banjo, mandolin, and violin. So much guitar and mandolin shredding!
They do a country-fied version of Black Flag’s “Wasted” ffs! It was a match made in Heaven for this 15 year old kid suburban punk.

The B-52’s release their second LP, “Wild Planet”
Sophomore albums are rarely as good as the first one, but damn, this is about as close as you can get to repeating unbelievable success and cool music.
Recorded in the Bahamas like its predecessor, this follow up delivers more of the band’s signature sound; retro-kitsch, bouncy beats, quirky hooks, and first-class vocals from Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson.
Some real classics on this one, including “Quiche Lorraine,” “Dirty Back Road” and the immortal “Private Idaho”. But it’s another album you should just play from start to finish.

This is way more aggressive sounding than their follow on records. Tommy Stinson was 14 years old when they made this record! 🤯
The first couple of songs I can recall hearing from The Replacements are from this album. “Customer” and “I Hate Music”. The latter was used as the theme song for an underground radio show of the same name.
I think the first Replacements album I bought was actually Hootenanny. IIRC, “Sorry Ma…” was kinda hard to find back in the day, but I got it around the same time. Along with “Stink”, these are my favorite Replacement albums.

It's Bandcamp Friday (all sales go directly to artists) so I finally grabbed all four of the amazing Ten High (https://tenhigh.bandcamp.com) albums - I mentioned em on here before. Whew- talk about an *underrated* underground band.
Again, I can listen to ALL FOUR of these albums ALL THE WAY THROUGH, which is INSANE. ALL of these songs are bangers (at least to me -- I'm picky, and this is some KILLER bluesy garage psych stuff). No idea how they achieved so many great albums. Some bands can't even nail ONE album correctly.
Unfortunately, Ten High is broken up, as far as I can tell, but two of the members are now in a project called Off Peak Arson (https://offpeakarson.bandcamp.com) which, admittedly (and wonderfully) sounds a LOT like Ten High.

The brand new record The Current, from @josh's band Outro suggests that, despite the fact indie rock is now old enough to be classic rock, there's A LOT of life in the genre. The opening track is like a more raucous REM on a space-rock trip; the second track could almost be an American version of Echo and the Bunnymen or the Church. Indie Rock's not dead, and it's actually aging quite gracefully.

The new video for "Pod" from Snõõper's new album 'Super Snõõper' is a trip. The lead singer of Snõõper, Blair Tramel, is a schoolteacher, and their music is wild - it's like if a female sang for Devo and it was a little more punk? Yeah. Something like that.

I lived in New Hampshire for many years and we'd go to Boston for shows a lot- at T.T. the Bears (closed now 😢) and the Midway Cafe.
I saw The Gravel Pit at T.T.'s back in the early 2000s (a band made up of a singer/songwriter GENIUS, Jed Parish, and members of The Figgs).
Not sure how much (if any) The Gravel Pit got around outside of Massachusetts, but their album Silver Gorilla from 1999 is a modern rock MASTERPIECE. Jed's VOICE, LYRICS, and the arrangements-- give it a listen:

Revisiting Poster Children today because @communalsauce reminded me of them the other day. (Never forget bands you used to listen to!) Back in 1995, their album 'Junior Citizen' blew my friends and my minds-- we were obsessed with it. I had a band or two back then I played bass in. We'd cover 'Drug I Need' (track 5) and I'd sing it-- what a song. The whole ALBUM is a VIBE and still gives me chills (those first few tracks!!) It's kinda Pixies, kinda something else. If you like wild, weird rock music (like I do), this is for you.

Current obsession: this 3 piece band from Arkansas called Ten High I discovered yesterday on Bandcamp. No idea if they're still together, as they only have a Facebook aside from their stuff on Bandcamp, and they haven't put out an album since 2018.
But ALL FOUR of their albums on Bandcamp (https://tenhigh.bandcamp.com) are fuzzy, bluesy garage psych-punk MASTERPIECES, and I can't even choose a favorite. I was able to listen to all four yesterday all the way through chronologically (which is saying a lot, I'm picky, and it's rare for bands to write amazing full albums)-- and I'm doing the same today.
I'm just blown away. It's rare to find bands that are so cool and solid. Ten High put out some really rough, weird stuff with some rad, gnarly, often unintelligible lyrics along with catchy, fuzzy riffs. There's so much to dig about them, I hope they're still around.

My intro to the band was the following year with the release of “Bandwagonesque”. So I had to go back and check out this one after the fact, which left me unimpressed.
